  1. I used to love me some flathead catfish. Then I realized that the big ones had probably seen some shit in their lifetimes, so I started turning them loose again. As I age, I’ve found that meat on the table means almost nothing to me anymore.

I can understand the sentiment, but I’d cut a bitch for the belly and cheek meat off a 50# op.

I don't trust the paper glasses ... just my opinion.  I will be making a pinhole camera to check it out, which is really simple to do.

Something to check out during the eclipse tomorrow.  Find a tree with leaves throwing a shadow on the ground, or on a building.  You may see some half moon shapes, which is pretty cool.

Eclipse shadows from the live oak tree in my front yard during the 2017 partial eclipse.  Didn’t know this happens and I noticed it as I was going into the house to get some stuff to view with.    A programmable shade level welding helmet also works pretty good  for viewing eclipses.

It seems to me we need some old school ecoterrorist types to apply their skills to taking out bitcoin mining operations.   Fuck those fucking fucks.  I don't see how this is any different than a Mafia protection racket.

Feel free to show up and wave a sign or throw a molotov or two.

Supposedly some Greenpeace types are supposed to show up so you never know.

The Kevin James Meme Is Way Out of Control

This week, a sheepish headshot of the 'King of Queens' actor resurfaced—and the Internet can't get enough. (Still.)

Kinda meh in the meme but the KJ Sound Guy shorts are pretty damn good.

  5. Early afternoon flight from DFW to San Antonio.  Packed house, and I am in my aisle seat.  Lady is all giggling as she approaches, "Debbie, we're right here, y'all are right in front of us," as she points to 2 inside seats by me.  I get up and let them in.
2 more couples walk by, "Hi Doris!  Hey there's Rhonda!"
Lady apologizes for being so upbeat, I nod and tell her it's fine, but I'm laughing inside as every dude who came on with those gals had that long face/ practically a scowl like liver & onions was the meal of the evening.  I continue just sitting there as people find their seats.
"Hon( me)  none of us know each other.  We've been in a chat group and this is our couples marriage  retreat."
Immediately the guys' expressions make complete sense, as I ask, "where are you going?"  Figuring it'd be one of the very nice local resorts in San Antonio area.
    "Some ranch by Junction."
I'm not sure if I hid my expression, but I did not physically laugh, although I wanted to.  I thought of this board.  I thought of my friends.  I thought of the movie Couples Retreat and the Boooom!!! yoga.  Yeah, every one of those husbands already wanted to die.  Then imagine them way, way out in the middle of nowhere, which in and of itself is fine; but then surrounded by counselors and yappy women.
4 days of hell.  I kept laughing inside for the whole flight.

WhoTF flies from Dallas to SA, to then get in another car or bus to drive out near Junction. That’s gotta be why the men are pissed.

    1) We had a similar experience clearing out my in-laws' place when the old man was moving out.  She had a decorative wreath for EVERY.  FUCKING.  HOLIDAY.  I mean, probably including Arbor day.  There were black plastic trash bags in the attic, stuffed with plastic grocery bags....which had been up there, in the Houston heat, for a decade plus.  The plastic trash bags had disintegrated, so they were just giant bags of plastic snow.  Every padded envelope she had ever received was saved and tucked into a cabinet "for when she might need it later."  She was a child of a child of the Depression, and it clearly made a impression.

    2) I'll give ya $20 for the Super Pong console.

Yep all of this.  Had to move the shop vac into the attic to suck up the pieces of plastic it got so bad. Probably 20+ wreaths up there.  And 25+ old Tonka trucks, and boxes of Nat Geo, Reader Digest, Boys Life etc from the 60s on.

Dibs has already been called on Pong so it’s not for sale.  Plenary of other treasures though.

  7. Mom passed away in 2017 and dad stayed in the house until we moved him to a memry care faculty at the first of this years.  They lived in the house for 45 years and dad, being born in the depression and growing up in the war, never threw anything away.

We’ve been going through the house cleaning out and organizing since the spring.  Mom loved entertaining and decorating different holidays and had all kinds of stuff.  Most are not expensive antiques, but there’s enough stuff that we’re going to have an estate auction later this year or early next year.

Mom had five different buffet/china cabinet type pieces in the house and everyone of them are like this.   If you look closely, there are 13 cake stands in this one cabinet alone.  13!   We always said my dad was the pack rat, but looking again, mom may just have been better at hiding it.  My sisters (no pics) have found at least 8 more cake stands in other cabinets and several more packed away in the attic.

I need to do a ‘Shit I found in my Parent’s Attic’ thread with the pictures I took while we where cleaning it out.

As a teaser,  here’s the Super Pong game we had in the mid 70s, complete with box and instruction manual

many years ago, some cormorants discovered that Barton Springs Pool had a large fish population. A month later, not a fish to be found. IT was amazing the size of those fish they could eat. At some point, I realized they always swallowed the fish head first to keep the dorsal fin from sticking in their throats. A few times they would bring up catfish that probably weighed as much as they did. If they were unable to eat them because they were so big, they would let them go, but often the fish would die anyway.
I used to love sitting in the lifeguard chair and watch the cormorants fly in, dive, eat, and fly out. When I was off duty, I'd grab a diving mask and watch them swim underwater. Incredibly fast.
There was a big stink about whether or not the City of Austin should do something. Save the Fish vs Save the Cormorants. It was quite the dilemma.

We had a double crested cormorant depredation permit for a while. We have a small lake that borders up onto a very large lake and the double crested cormorants got pretty bad after a while. We would be duck hunting on the smaller lake and my dad would just set in a flyway between the lakes and pound cormorants all morning long. They wised up eventually and figured out the small lake was not the place to be if they didn’t want BB steel shot blasted at them.

  10. Riot has about 450 MW of mining capacity in Rockdale at the old Alcoa plant. They plan on expanding to 750MW at that location. They are also currently in phase 1 construction of 250MW capacity in Navarro county and plan on expanding that to 1 GW.

In recent months the only money they have made is shutting down cpu’s and selling allotted electricity back to the grid instead. They have long term contracts to purchase at $0.02-0.03 kwhr and can sell back at much higher, all in the name of keeping the Texas grid stable.

  11. About 5 or 6 weeks ago my son gave me this dehumidifier sack of pellets to put in my safe.
When the pellets were all gone and the sack drained, there were two cups of this water that it had soaked up.
I never had heard of those before. HD sells them, as does Lowe’s.

I’m not sure I’d want to put damp rid in my safe. I’m sure the chemical is some kind of salts and that while it sucks out moisture the vapor off of that can’t be good for gun metal. Hard to beat and old standard goldenrod.

And this comes from the guy that puts two big buckets of damp rod in his rv when he puts it up in storage.

Also, have seen a bunch of folks with damaged rv floors when those hanging bags get a puncture or spring a leak. Hate to have that happen in a safe

  12. I travel up 155 to my dad’s in Tyler 2 or 3 times a month. When you come off the bridge across Ledbetter Bayheaded north, you damn sure better be 55mph or below or you’re gonna catch a ticket when you top the hill by the dollar stores. They are there every time, usually with a car pulled over.

I didn’t catch if the news report talked about when there were several big 8 liner game rooms in CC. Cars would be parked up and down 155 at the one next to Kilo’s and another place down by the dollar stores. I think the sheriff or the TX Rangers finally came in and it down. The place next to Kilo’s still sports a sign on the building.
