  1. I want to find a Texas bourbon to mix Manhattans and sours...trying to get some Texas product on my shelf. Lots of choices at Total wine but no help from the store associate. Suggestions?

    Herman Marshall

    Lone Elm

    Ironroot

    Balcones

All Texas craft distillers that have achieved some level of notoriety.

  2. Different people -- different tastes.  Just underscores why, instead of relying primarily on recommendations by others, people new to bourbon should go out and taste as much as they can and find out what suits their palates.

Completely agree - taste as much as you can before you buy. I do like hearing others opinions and experiences though. I can gauge for myself if I agree or not. Recommendations, tasting notes, research and news (looking at you BFLT) are one of the better elements of this thread as others share their experiences and knowledge.

  3. I think I prefer 1870 to 1910. I know this is blasphemy, but my palette has shifted some. I pick up a smoky tasting note in 1910.

Not blasphemy. I like both. Two quality options.
  4. Post Beatles?

Sweet George for me. Lennon second and Paul & Wings last. And I’ve had to come around on this but Harrisons music has stood the test of time much better than the others.

If you haven’t seen it, try to catch “Concert for George”. I believe it’s available on some streaming services. It’s awesome. You’re welcome.

Man. Fuck Wade Morrow. Just fight it out and quit being a pussy. Gotta be the most annoying bad guy move to “send a message”.

Well if he indeed kills off Teeter and her ridiculous trailer park trash accent from nowhere, then he gets points in my book.

  6. Wow, i really overpaid.

Not really. Just give it a try, see how you like it and judge what you’d be willing to pay for it in the future. Lots of good options in that price range.

  7. What are everyone's thoughts on Old Ezra 7 Barrel Strength? Picked up a bottle today for 70, which felt high but I've never seen it on the shelf before.

I liked the bottle I finished and bought another.
That said, I wouldn’t pay more than retail now that I’ve had it. But I say that about most. It’s nice to try these things to see what all the fuss is about but at the end of the day, I find
    they aren’t life changing. YMMV.

  8. I’ve read where Facebook is cracking down on any alcohol sales which has grown to be a big part of the grey or secondary market.

Good. Screw the flippers. Find a real job.

  9. I touched on this earlier in the thread this is part of why I don’t like Single Barrel bourbon. It’s just too much of a crapshoot. A truly bad barrel is rare, but a truly great one is just as rare. And a very good blend is always better than all but the best single barrels.

After having multiple single barrels and store picks over the last few years, I’d have to agree with you to a point. Some great, some meh and few stinkers. For the average bourbon drinker I think this is sound advice. No need to play single barrel roulette when you can get consistent quality from what’s on the shelf. However it is fun to try SBs and come up with the occasional gem. I’m finding better results with some distillers than others and of course it’s always good to try before you buy if the retailer allows it. Getting to taste can take out a lot of the guess work (although COViD has recently put a damper on this practice).

Anyway, always appreciate your take on things Bozo.

  10. It is with a heavy heart that I reveal I caught a bad single barrel of Larceny 92 proof at Spec's. The barrel serial number is 6515659 barreled on 4/15/2013. It's perfectly drinkable, but it is straight nightmare hangover fuel. I'm talking the day after a Kentucky Derby Party level hangover. Proceed with caution.

I experienced the same thing with an EC Specs store pick. I tasted against two other EC store picks and the one from Specs was a burner compared to the other two.
  11. $500mm to walk away instead of possibly losing it for nothing is an offer that’ll be swiftly turned down by john/beth because having to drop bodies a few times per year to keep the land you make zero profit from just makes more sense. because legacy and tradition.

Yes but now, now he realizes “it’s all for nothing” so he’s got to be tempted right?

That is if Jamie ever gets around to telling him about the offer.
  12. Nothing fancy. 225 for four+ hours. Brushed them with some vinegar/brown sugar about half way to keep them from drying out and then some bbq sauce w 30 min to go.

First time for a whole chicken. Came out good. Nice Smokey flavor and meat was moist and tender.
