Texas wins in 2 and they fire Pierce on Friday.

I said it the other day but I really don't see the point in letting him twist in the wind for the next 2 weeks or whatever until you have your next guy en route to Austin. All that does is just hurt the current roster and kids who are potentially looking at the roster and still see Pierce as the coach.

Just cut bait. There are ways to run a smooth process of firing someone and hiring someone else a week or two later. We have a real AD and stability in the athletic department. Not everything has to be like 2016.

So did those good Big 12 tourney runs help or hinder OU and OSUs regional tourney efforts?

KSU going 1-2 and WVU going 0-2 really hurt their momentum going into regional play.

Also, here’s a fun fact: 4 of the 5 P5 conference tournament champions didn’t advance out of regional play. Arizona, Nebraska, OSU and Duke. Tennessee was the only one who did.

Isn't Flores' little brother on the way to campus?   Might that get JF to stay a season?

They aren't related. The incoming Flores is from the DFW area. Jalin is from the San Antonio area.

Van Horn is perpetual disappointment and would be like basically hiring another Pierce.

    *postseason disappointment

The guy has won the SEC West 4 of the last 5 years. As someone who continually points to Pierce's SEC record, I don't know how you can compare him to Van Horn.

(We also aren't hiring 64 year old Dave Van Horn, so it's a moot conversation anyway)

Texas actually has a solid nucleus to build on should they not transfer. A new coach that can add arms can make a run in year one. Belyeu, Flores, Thomas, Borba, Gasparino….both catchers return with solid bats but I’d like to see us upgrade defensively.

Galvan showed me enough to where I would feel comfortable with him being the everyday catch headed into next season.

Schuessler needs to grab a first base mitt or else he may be headed for DH duties again.

Has he ever won a game in Omaha?

    Trait, traits, traits.

If you are looking for a coach who has never underperformed once in his career or never lost a game he shouldn't have lost, we might as well just fold the program. Tennessee was NOTHING before Vitello took over and now we are complaining about their performances in Omaha?

  7. HS class coming in for those interested. Rainer and Gillen will not be making it to campus. Sterling is also probably gone but there might be a small chance there. Flores/Richardson/Schwartz/DeGroat I've seen in draft lists and mocks but all were outside the top 100-150. We get 3 of 4 from that group on campus and it will be a good class.

Vitello has to be the guy if we move on from Pierce. He has yet to win the big one but he's now gone to 4 supers in a row and accounted for 1/3 of Tennessee's CWS trips and half their Supers. He's also averaging about 50 per year the last 4. For reference Pierce has just one since being hired.

Also if we play the AD relationship game to see who CDC has a history with its either Vitello (TCU 11-13) or Saarloos (14-present). This is assuming Schloss stays put in the Jimbo of College baseball role he's gotten pretty good at.

I would love Vitello and think he would win huge here, but I don't think it is happening for a variety of reasons. Saarloos should be a complete non-starter at this point. That dude's seat at TCU will be somewhat warm headed into next year after the total flop this year when they went all-in.

I would be floored if we got more than 1 of those draft-eligible guys back. Constantine, Tole and Mercer are done (I don't think he's getting a medical redshirt) so that is 13ish guys that will be departing already before we even get into portal exits and there is a lot of fat that needs to be trimmed off the bottom of this roster.

Honestly, outside of Gasparino, Belyeu, Galvan, Schuessler, Grubbs and Whitehead there ain't much on this roster I would lose sleep over if they left. Maybe throw Borba and Tumis in that mix but that's about it. We always get excited about young guys like Kennedy and Farmer and whatnot, but those dudes are a dime a dozen. Probably 20 dudes in the portal just like them.

I think he learned his lesson from that Herman vote of confidence memo.

Which goes back to my original question of how long do you get the guy twist in the wind. The CWS doesn't wrap up until June 24th. What if the guy you want plays all the way til the end or close to the end? Or he strings you along and then says nevermind I'm staying at my current spot? The portal is going to explode starting tomorrow and the worst thing you can do is just let Pierce sit there as a lame duck. It would potentially set the new guy back even further. If the job comes open this week, then maybe that will give some pause to players and coaches as they wait around to see what might happen with Texas. But it could also cause some of the circus we saw in 2016 (although many other factors were obviously involved including the interim AD stuff).

At some point in the next 14-22 days the question will need to be answered and CDC can't just play coy and be silent for the entire time.

What would be the first clue that Pierce may be on his way out (other than this season)?

Silence will tell us everything we need to know. My guess is if pressed, CDC would give some neutral answer about being in OKC with the softball team and meeting with Pierce once he gets back to Austin or something of the sort.

The hammer could also be dropped tomorrow.

  12. They had to bring the fences in at the Disch. It was starting to hurt in recruiting. We hit 22 home runs as a team in 2014 lol.

The NCAA also changed the seams on the baseball in 2015, and offense started to take off ever since.

Even with the moved-in fences, the park still plays pretty pitcher-friendly when the wind isn't howling out (which has seemed to happen more and more in the last few years for whatever reason).

Being the first big program to make the change gives you a leg up on the candidates. If it is done properly and not a pathetic interim AD way that was bullied by Houston BMDs  type of way it can result in very good hire.

Arkansas might be looking for a new coach too, fwiw

Van Horn ain't going anywhere unless he decides to retire, which I guess is possible. He's about to be 64.

You let him twist in the wind and communicate through back channels which I’m sure has already been happening.

So we are going to allow him to do exit meetings with current players, some of which may not go well, start recruiting the portal/juco ranks, and do other roster management staff all with the plan of axing him in a few weeks? Doesn't seem ideal.

It's why I think a decision might come down sooner than we think, even if it means the job sits "open" for a bit with some attractive candidates still playing.

  15. Going to be an interesting few weeks. All the ideal candidates will likely be playing for the next week or two. What do you do in the meantime? Just let Pierce twist in the wind until a hire can be finalized? The portal fully opens tomorrow, and just sitting idle for several weeks doesn't seem like the best plan. But dropping the ax tomorrow without a clear path forward of filling the position soon also doesn't seem like the best plan.

    Really?

Yep. His dad was a pain in the ass all of last year and this year. There were 3 dads who constantly caused problems last year to the point two of the players basically weren’t welcomed back: Daly, Morehouse and Hurley.

Daly’s was the worst. Way he acted towards players, parents of players, coaches, administrators. It was awful.

Doesnt feel like the team has any energy. Just going through the motions out there.

    Because they are losing?

I somewhat understand why people try to say stuff like this but have you ever seen a team hollering and laughing with 100 people in the stands in the middle of the afternoon when trailing 2-1?
