There is also the difference in draft slot money. If he thinks he can significantly improve his draft slot by coming back then he would be looking at a much bigger signing bonus next year.
Actually, it's the opposite when you are going to be a senior. Seniors have zero draft leverage, so you often see them sign for pennies (the signing bonuses for seniors are like 5-10k).
So you are basically weighing going back to school to collect a NIL paycheck and sign for pennies next year vs taking the six-figure signing bonus now.

Fong with some intel that I like
SpoilerLed by five-star quarterback Dia Bell, Texas has Rival’s No. 16 ranked recruiting class at this point in the summer but aim to go on another heater in the near future.
Rivals has the latest buzz regarding the Longhorns and many of their top targets in the 2026 class.
Confidence is high on the offensive line
Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo locked in his commitment date for July 4 and Texas is looking strong for fireworks. The Burnt Orange have long been considered the favorite for the coveted in-state, point-of-attack player who has also strongly considered Ohio State among others. The Buckeyes have been the biggest challenger but the intel still favors Hook Em.
Fort Worth (Texas) North Crowley blue-chipper and the nation’s No. 2 interior offensive lineman John Turntine will also announce his college plans on July 4 and a source with knowledge of the recruitment believes the Longhorns also continue to set the pace. Turntine has given a hard look to Stanford, Michigan and Texas A&M, but Steve Sarkisian and his program have been a leader for the entire process.
Ojo is the nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 6 prospect overall. Turntine is the No. 43 overall player in the land.
Three more Texas is considered the leader for
Huntersville (NC) William Amos Hough four-star cornerback Samari Matthews has a July 11 decision date. A spring visit to Austin and then the official visit in June saw the Longhorns rise to No. 1. South Carolina is the biggest challenger but it will take a big move to beat Texas at this point.
Matthews is the nation’s No. 9 cornerback and No. 70 prospect overall.
Temple (Texas) High four-star edge rusher Jamarion Carlton will make his college announcement on July 10 and it would be a huge surprise if he ended up somewhere other than Texas. Carlton checks in as the No. 8 edge rusher and No. 44 player overall.
Katy (Texas) Mayde Creek four-star linebacker Kosi Okpala will announce his college plans on July 3 at 10 a.m. on the On3 Recruits YouTube Channel. The Longhorns are considered the heavy favorite.
Okpala is the No. 19 linebacker and No. 283 prospect overall.
Texas has been rising for four-star linebacker
Long considered a lean to Tennessee, Texas has been moving up the ladder for Marietta (Ga.) Kell four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse. At one point Rouse also strongly considered Alabama and Michigan but down the stretch the Longhorns have become the biggest threat to the Vols.
Don’t be surprised if Rouse comes off the board this weekend.
More big fish the Longhorns are still battling for
It starts with top-ranked linebacker Tyler Atkinson. The five-star out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson said over the weekend he wants to commit sometime this month. Georgia has always been one of the favorites. Texas has come on strong. Oregon and Clemson round out the contenders.
Fort Myers (Fla.) High four-star defensive lineman Kendall Guervil is trending toward Florida heading into his commitment announcement on July 2 but the dialogue has not stopped with the Longhorns. It would be a surprise if it’s not the Gators, but UT isn’t going down without a fight.
Texas is on the gas for the nation’s No. 3 cornerback Davon Benjamin and is a legit contender, alongside Oregon and Michigan.
The Longhorns definitely want to sign another receiver in this 2026 class. As they look for senior risers this fall, one name that will never leave the board is LSU commit Jabari Mack. The Longhorns had momentum with Mack early in the year before he popped for the Tigers.
Dialogue continues with the likes of receiver Jalen Lott, defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright, edge Jake Kreul and tight end Heze Kent.

I think Saunier might be trending towards the draft. Throwing well on The Cape and has an interesting pitch mix. Weiner seemed to unlock something in the second half of the season.
Any pick after round 10 can sign for up to $125k without counting towards the bonus pool MLB teams are allotted, so he could be in line for a six-figure signing bonus even as a late-round pick.

Michigan 247 writer on Turntine (the last bullet point is peak 9.95)
Last week, Michigan landed two of their top three overall tackle targets in four-star Malakai Lee and three-star Marky Walbridge. With top target Bear McWhorter also committed on the interior, the Wolverines (as we reported upon Lee's verbal) are in a position of power.
One name who remains out there is Top100 John Turntine, who is expected to make his college decision on July 4th. A couple things on his recruitment:
- It's believed that none of Turntine's four finalists know what he's going to do. After announcing his commitment date, he and his family/camp have gone radio silent and appear dead set on deliberating close to the vest before making a decision.
- Michigan adding Lee and Walbridge (who are two clear tackles) made things more difficult but not impossible with Turntine as they've been pitching him as a prospect who could play anywhere along the line. Add in Ty Haywood and Andrew Babalola last cycle and Michigan's depth chart at tackle is a factor.
- Texas, meanwhile, is in a position of relative desperation as far as wanting to add another tackle. They look like they'll still be the pick for Felix Ojo but after missing out on Zaden Krempin and Malakai Lee (after a late run) they will be able to pitch tackle or guard to Turntine with a clearer path to either position.
- Last note comes from a great source: 'it could be any four of his finalists'
Later added in the comments: "My personal read remains that he'll end up choosing Texas."

IT is hearing from multiple sources Texas is trying to pick up the pace on Frisco athlete Jalen Lott. This is likely tied, at least in part, to Texas' trailing position for Kaydon Finley.
We don't know how far this will go but it's a development in the right direction. Previously it seemed Texas was resigned to letting him go to USC or Oregon. At last check USC had the most aggressive offer on the table. Relative to this cycle (where costs are lower than last year), it's a big offer.
Lott commits on July 8.-

Looking around some classes in the SEC and what the hell is happening at Auburn?

I feel like we’ve barely heard their name connected to targets we are after in the southeast.

Seems like other schools are immediately reallocating NIL funds that free up when they lose out on a recruit to increase the offer for another target and Texas remains firm on the initial offer, at least for now.
Gerry mentioned over the weekend that we had the highest NIL offer on the table for James Johnson, so I don't think we are just sitting back and taking it on the chin.

Maybe OTF has done it before and I missed it, but that’s the first time I’ve seen NIL referenced in the Finley recruitment.

SpoilerOnTexasFootball takes a look at the week of announcements scheduled.
Kendall Guervil ...
Texas had a nice sized lead here for a while. And then the home state Gators got extremely aggressive to begin the week ahead of the July 2 announcement. The news of the very impactful move leaked out from the Georgia market when they received the bad news. Guervil and family went from constant communication with Texas staff members for weeks to near zero on Monday.Trenton Henderson ...
The 5-star from Pensacola (Fla.) Catholic is expected to announce for LSU over Florida and Texas July 2. This is one the Longhorns will continue to pursue through the season leading up to the December signing period.Kosi Okpala ...
The OTF 4-star+ linebacker has also been a Texas lean since early in the process. The 6-foot-2, 227-pounder has been on campus in Austin more than anywhere else, and saved his final OV for the Longhorns June 20-22. Okpala was the first in-state linebacker prospect Johnny Nansen went to see after being hired by Texas. The Longhorns' competition is Penn State, Baylor and Miami. The Houston area prospect is scheduled to announce July 3 around 11am CST.John Turntine III ...
This is a recruitment Texas has been in a good position for since late in sophomore season. To put it bluntly, this one would be a body blow for the Texas staff if it went another direction. Kyle Flood has been on the OTF 5-star longer than anyone. And there is positive feelings on the 40 to start the week. Texas is seemingly battling Michigan with Texas A&M and Stanford not throwing in the towel.Felix Ojo ...
The OTF 4-star+ upside offensive tackle prospect has always been considered a wildcard for us because of making seven official visits and the lack of consistency in the recruitment. The two constants in terms of team have been Texas and Ohio State, however. Along with the two favorites, the DFW area prospect made official visits to Florida, Michigan, Ole Miss, Colorado and Utah since the first weekend in May. Ojo listed Texas and Ohio State as the final two last week. He now has Texas, Ohio State, Florida and Michigan as the four finalists headed into his birthday announcement July 4.Kaydon Finley ...
Notre Dame is considered the favorite over Texas as of Monday night. The Longhorns are seemingly prioritizing NIL allotment in the 2026 cycle at positions other than WR. Finley will announce July 4.-

Full update from Florida On3 mod
Yes I know the buzz thats been out there points to 4-star Kendall Guervil ending up at Texas when he commits on July 2.
However, I heard today that he and UF remain in contact, and there is still a feeling on UF's end that they are still battling for him. Most of the info we've heard since he set his commitment date points to Texas. He's named them his No. 1 for a few months, and it's felt like him setting a commitment date while on his Texas OV is telling. Wouldn't say I've heard any sort of confidence or optimism yet on UF's end. Hell, Texas still is confident I'm told.
Just passing along that I was told UF doesn't feel like they are out of it as they try to fight for him these last few days before his commitment date. I'm assuming NIL is what the key piece will have to be for this to turn another way.
Will update if we hear anything more on this. -

Florida has had a rough time with DL recruiting in 2026 and there’s some talk they’re upping the NIL offer for Sunshine State four-star Kendall Guervil.
We still believe Texas looks good here, but UF is desperate and could make this interesting ahead of his announcement this week.-

They've been big game hunting for years now, but this cycle does seem to be a notch higher with the amount of high-profile OOS guys. Last year, we had 7 top 100 players from Texas (Williams, Lockett, Phillips, Jackson, Terry, Barnes and Townsend). This cycle that number could be as few as 3-4.
We were never getting Lee, Roseborough, Ojo, and Turntine, but that is who Gerry continually brought up as top targets when peppered with questions about OL recruiting all spring, so some got it stuck in their mind that those must be the most likely guys to end up in the class. Then, when a few go elsewhere, they wonder what happened.
I also think some of what has happened has just been some shitty timing with a bunch of guys who probably weren't ending up here lining up their announcements all in a row.

Did you see Tommy Farmer personally cost us at least one game by dropping two balls that were in his glove when he ran into the fence?
He also saved our ass several other times with outstanding catches.
Winfield had 2-3 different instances where he dropped routine fly balls 100 feet in front of the fence, and also had a noodle arm.

I know it's the age of pay to play and that lowers the threshold for criticism but I'm still not one to criticize college athletes like professionals but that said, there's not a single guy on that list that I wished was staying. not one.
While we are at it, Easton Winfield was maybe the worst defensive outfielder I've ever seen at Texas.

Getting myself back on track - I was listening to the most recent OTF livestream and Bobby kept saying that Calicut had committed to Texas but that it was a "private commitment" that didn't go public. So I'm guessing Calicut was one of Gerry's "hi" comments and it hasn't panned out. So now we're down to two silents who have yet to announce, am I remembering that correctly?
It's also frustrating that silent commitments still aren't worth shit, even with NIL deals on the table.
Looks like on 6/19 he confirmed there were 3 outstanding hi's, and he added 3 more hi's during the last official visit weekend. One of those was Calicut and I'm assuming Vodney Cleveland was another.
So if Richard Wesley was a hi then that leaves 3 that haven't been announced, if he wasn't then there are 4 left.

The roster numbers are going to be a mess for a few years because of all the grandfather rules for guys that signed prior to the house settlement. You can also designate guys as dudes who would have been cut, and I'm pretty sure they don't count against the 34-man limit for Texas or any school they transfer to (think dudes like Duplantier, etc.).

I’m assuming it’s another pitcher. Still some dead weight there.
Or, maybe Jayden wants a starting spot somewhere else.
I would have my eye on someone like Navarre, considering the lefty arms we've brought in.

SpoilerLonghorns have opportunity to rebound this week on the trail
Steve Sarkisian and staff suffered a couple of tough losses on the trail last week in 4-star++ OT Malakai Lee and 4-star++ defensive lineman James Johnson. Those are two prospects OTF expects Texas to recruit until signing day in December.
The Longhorns begin the week with a class ranked anywhere from 10 to 13, with the possibility to ascend into the top 5 with some big decisions on deck.
OnTexasFootball takes a look at the week ahead for the staff.
Kendall Guervil ...
The 4-star++ defensive lineman is set to announce July 2 (noon CST) with Texas having been the trending school over Georgia and Florida since the spring.Trenton Henderson ...
Texas is fighting favorite Florida ahead of the 5-star's July 2 announcement. LSU is the third school in contention.Kosi Okpala ...
The most chatter in the recruitment of the 4-star+ linebacker out of Mayde Creek in Houston has centered around the Longhorns. Penn State and Baylor are also on the list. Okpala is set to announce July 3 around 11am.John Turntine III ...
Texas continues to have the most chatter over Michigan headed into the July 4 announcement. Neither Stanford or Texas A&M has given up.When will Felix Ojo and Tyler Atkinson announce...
4-star++ OT Felix Ojo (Mansfield, Texas/Lake Ridge) has a birthday coming up July 4. That presents the possibility of an announcement this week. Texas continues to lead Ohio State. It's expected to be Texas or Georgia for 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson (Loganville, Ga./Grayson). OTF hears a July 4 announcement is a possibility, but not a lock.
Will 4-star+ Jamarion Carlton wait until July 10? OTF is monitoring the possibility of a date change.
Not expected to go Texas' way ...
Bryce Perry-Wright (Buford, Ga./High) - the commitment of Richard Wesley being the key here.Kaydon Finley (Aledo, Texas/High) - ND barring a late shift

Few interesting snippets from Johnson about his decision from the Georgia on3 site
SpoilerJohnson told Georgia’s coaches that he was going to be committing to them once he finished his official visit to Texas last weekend.
Johnson felt strongly about Georgia, even in the first weekend of the month of June when he took his official visit to Georgia.
“My first OV, I knew it,” Johnson said. “That’s when I knew it and just decided to take all the rest of the OVs, see if it would change my mind. I was locked in with Georgia from the start…I didn’t really let them know. I let them know right after I got out of Texas, I let them know.”
Georgia had to fend off multiple contenders to land James Johnson
Johnson admits Texas made things close.
“I’d say Texas came kind of close,” Johnson said. “I decided to think about Texas. Ultimately, I stayed locked in with Georgia.”
The hometown program made a push as well. Johnson had people close to him pulling him toward the hometown powerhouse.
Johnson felt Georgia and the SEC fit his interests more.
“I did have a lot of phone calls from Miami, I can’t even lie,” Johnson said. “Like they would call me while I was sleeping, I wouldn’t answer them, but I did get times speaking to them sometimes. They did try to make a big push, but I’m more of an SEC type of dude.”

“It was a tough decision, but I followed my heart and Florida is the place for me,” Guervil told Rivals. “When I left Texas, I thought it was Texas, but I came home, I thought about it a lot, I prayed about it and Florida was in my heart.”
