  1. A lot of great recs in this thread.

Train to Busan and I Saw the Devil are generally two of my recs when people ask what to watch if you don't mind the gore.

Some other movies not mentioned yet:

    New World

    Master

    Along with the Gods

    Mother

Korea makes some really great comedies as well.

    Speedy Scandal/Scandal Makers (Amazon Prime)

    Miracle in Cell No. 7

    Hello Ghost

  2. Thanks Surly. I used to only think about Bob's when Norm HItzges would lipsmack his way through a live ad. Now that picture is going to be seared into my brain every time I see the restaurant or hear a live spot.

For a little irony given where this virus originated I've found that now H Mart is the first choice grocery store I go for everything I can get there and only venture to regular stores if necessary simply because that's the only store that doesn't have fuck head Karen's and Bubba's walking around with no mask getting in your personal space. The Asian population here takes this more seriously than anyone else and no one is without a mask.

HMart is a Korean chain. You'll see them in almost every market that has a decent sized Korean population.. They've gotten pretty popular with the other Asians as well so the secret's out. The food court in the Austin location is pretty damn good.

People in Korea regularly wear masks during the summer because of China and the pollution they cause with the yellow dust they send over.  So they're used to getting f'ed by China through no fault of their own.

One thing I've thought about recently when it comes to the vaccine. If a vaccine is made I hope it comes from some place like Korea or Taiwan or Germany. The last 2 countries that can be counted on to handle it properly is China and the US.

  4. In South Korea news...they reported no new domestic cases for the first time since Feb and they've been in the single digits for new cases for the past 10 days or so.  They're also  in the planning stages of providing antibody tests for the entire 51 mil population. Mind blowing that the US and Korea had their first case on the same day.

Here's an example of the type of quarantine kits they're providing for people who have to self isolate for 2 weeks when they get into the country.

    Uh.

Their methods are largely prolific PPE use, and testing and tracing. They didn’t shut their country down the way we did. They are straddled with the same global economy burden that everyone is, but I think they are in much better shape than most of the world when it comes to their internal economy because they have the virus largely contained.

They still have people traveling into the country every day. 2 week mandatory self quarantine. Government provides a quarantine kit with food and supplies when you get to your residence/address and follow up with phone calls twice a day. People caught breaking quarantine get deported.

I have always criticized Jones for reaching on position of need and not taking the best player available so I would be a terrible hypocrite for criticizing him now just because I hate Oklahoma. Assuming a trade down was not available, Dallas stood and and took the best player available. It’s what grown up teams do so from that standpoint it’s hard to really find fault in the pick. A lot of scouts think he is the best WR in the entire draft and to have that fall to you at 17 is really very fortunate.

My only fear is this forces Jones into “reach for position of need mode” for the rest of the draft. They can always still sign a veteran corner or trade for a defensive linemen later on so I hope the trend of taking best player available continues.

The way that the first round has fallen I expect a good DB to be there at 51. A lot of surprises from 20 on.

I've been reading good things about New Zealand.  I'm too old to learn a new language + I like the idea of being out of the way when the nuclear dictatorships / idiocracies throw down in the wake of this.

It's a beautiful country from everything I've been told from my friends who've visited(both US and international) and their government seems to care about its people which is always a plus. You can always learn a new language though. Trying to pick up a 3rd and 4th during this down time.

When did you start writing for the Atlantic?

Not quite as nihilistic as you but I'll be a Korean citizen the next time we go through this.

I think that among the bundle of claims related to the China travel restrictions, the claims worth critical focus are the ones where he puts specific numbers to the number of lives saved.  I've seen claims he put out saying that the travel restriction saved 100s of thousands. That is nonsensical on its face.

Those 100s of thousands of lives are inconsequential considering he's saved billions of lives just by being president.

Jeff Passan did an interview about that topic this morning. He said he interviewed an anonymous superstar about this situation and he said “no way in hell am I leaving my family.” Then he called him back the next day and the guy said “actually I talked to my wife, and we agreed. If it means not having to give up a years worth of salary, than she’s ok with me playing.”

With that being said, I don’t see how they could keep playing if even one player tests positive after they start. Very interesting...

Baseball just started back up in Korea. I'm going to assume MLB and most of the major sports are going to be keeping a close eye on how they're handling the situation.

It should have no effect on what you owe or your refund for your 2020 taxes, whatever the case may be. It's technically a 2020 tax credit that you are getting early in the form of a direct payment. The early payment will be counted against the credit and zero out on your 2020 taxes.

At least that's what the internet is telling me. I could be very wrong.

They're going to have to pass a 2nd relief bill before most people even get their checks.

Just spoke to my mom in Germany.  My cousin doctor in Bamberg finally got her test results, shes negative so shes going back to work.  Cant touch patients for another week though.  She said the Bamberg region has ~250ish cases, only 6 in ICU.  The German military is actually flying in Italian patients due to their ICU availability (German wide, not just Bamberg obviously), which is pretty ballsy IMO.

I was thinking about it this morning, I'm really surprised that we haven't instituted some kind of system that limits how and when people can move based on simple stuff like addresses.  We do similar during droughts, these numbers water Mon and Wed, these numbers are Tue and Thur.  Why cant we implement that kind of stuff for going to stores?  You would limit the exposure between areas and keep clusters more contained.  Check DLs or water bills at the door.

We could. Other countries already do it for limited supplies like facemasks (South Korea  - they're also providing care packages for people who have to quarantine upon arriving). Our government doesn't have time for things like that when it's peak grifting season.
