Fugit was fine.  Not everyone is Chalamet or DiCaprio talented when they are 15.

Almost Famous’ biggest problem is that Crudup is admirably trying but Crowe originally wanted Brad Pitt and that Tyler Dursen charisma.

This was on again the other night, so I watched it for the 100th time.  I think I agree that Fugit was fine.  He's an awkward 17 year old playing an awkward 15 year old.  If he was smooth, it would be a little weird.  In the bigger moments ("I AM THE ENEMY" and "I LOVED HER"), he's not great, but in the quieter moments, I think he plays the wide eyed kid well.

I do disagree on the Crudup/Pitt thing. I think with Pitt, it's a different movie, and the whole movie would be imbalanced.  That kind of super wattage would take away from the movie.  The strength of the movie is the scruffiness of it with smaller actors reflecting the level of the band who isn't quite there yet.  It would have made more money, but I don't think it would feel as casual or rewatchable.

I do want to add one thing.  Every time I watch it, I love Jason Lee more.  He's such a charismatic and fun performer ("actually, THAT you can print").   He had a fine career and is beloved by men of a certain age, but I wish he had more shots like this.

  2. Not sure if this needs its' own thread, but a new book about Dream came out today.

The author was on Russillo's podcast too, talking about it.

I am not that engaged with the recent Rockets teams, but I was 12-13 years old during those titles and he is my favorite athlete ever.  He doesn't get the love he deserves.  Super excited to read this one.

  3. I think Dabo is disingenuous asshole, but credit to him and his guys for seemingly turning it around. I agree the schedule has been light but they have been beating the fuck out of people, which is what good teams do.

  4. Guess who's also smokin' hot at Donn's Depot?

Beyond being smoke, she seems cool as shit and just having a great time being famous. Going to Donn’s just confirms all of that.

  5. The finale last night was great.  They had a lot to cover and they did a great job.  They changed some of the pieces around at the end from the book, but got to the same place.   Still one of the better series on TV and very reliably so.

One thing I wish they did from the book was :

    Spoiler

In the show, they just made Harkness's crew out to be a mindless kill squad.  In the book, they are funded by MI:5 (hence the Cartwright connection and how they had the dead body ID's) and are used to test the reaction to terrorist attacks.  So, for instance, they would put something in the drinking water of a town that wasn't poisonous but noticeable and see if they could do it and what the reaction would be.  Of course, they started getting insubordinate and the government stopped funding them.  The payment to get River's mom out was the last payment and negotiation.  The Westacres bombing happened when one of the crew broke and took a test and made it real.

Not a huge deal, but I just thought it would have made the makeup of the group more interesting than just "bad guys".

  6. It’s my wife and I’s 10th anniversary and we had planned a trip to London. We had to cancel early this week for health reasons but snagged a bungalow at Hotel Saint Cecelia for the weekend. We’d rather be in London but it’s been great.

We had drinks at Garage (I love this place) and dinner at Pecan St Cafe on Friday. We went to our daughter’s soccer game Sat morning (I’m the coach) and then hung at the hotel all afternoon before Mattie’s for dinner last night.

It’s remarkable how St Cecilia and Mattie’s are in the middle of town and still feel miles away. Both are very special places.
