  1. If it’s not for more than three years, we might as well not hire him. That’s cutting him off at the knees before he even starts. And why would he sign that with other major schools looking at him?
    But I don’t believe we’d do that.

This is correct. If CDC offers RT a 3 year deal, it should make everyone question if CDC is the right guy to be our AD. All evidence to this point says that he is, so I expect a 5 year deal at the market rate.

  2. I don’t know to fell about Bardstown Origin Series. I guess the wheated is better than the high rye, but either their recipe or the aging isn’t quite right. The first release is supposed to be the youngest, so it should improve. It’s not something I’m buying in bulk, yet.

I was indifferent towards the BiB the first time I had it. I didn’t come back to the bottle for a month plus, and poured some last night. I don’t know if it was just a matter of opening up or if my expectations were too high initially, but I found it to be damn good. Tons of vanilla and a bit of cherry. It’s a damn good flavor profile for a $50 bottle. I don’t believe in having a daily drinker, but I can totally see where this one would fit that bill for a lot of folks.
  3. It’s very different. Our group was excited to pick one up and nobody liked it. It’s great on the front palate, but the finish is where all the grapefruit and walnut notes appear and it just didn’t work for me.

I flipped our opened bottle for a WFP and ER store pick combo.

  4. Staying in Seattle for a few days in August, kids are 4, 6 and 9…what’s the best area to stay in where we are close enough to stuff but not tripping over tranqed out zombies on the sidewalks?

You could stay in South Lake Union or Queen Anne and accomplish your goals. SLU will feel more city/urban whereas Queen Anne will feel more like the experience of living in Seattle. Hotels are easy to come by in SLU but I’d suggest going VRBO/AirBnB if you want to stay in Queen Anne.

August is awesome, so long as there aren’t any smoke issues from wild fires in neighboring states.

  5. Speaking of Woodford, I picked up a bottle of Double XO Blend in Heathrow on my way back home Friday. It’s in the current Master’s collection bottle. The bottle claims it’s finished in “heavily toasted & in XO Cognac casks”. I don’t think there is a US release planned but it’s one of the better Woodford products I’ve had in a minute.

  6. Just found this in the back of our home office closet. I think it is from 2010, when I bought the 6 bottle case in Fredericksburg.
Gave 2 to my sons & drank two.
Dunno if it is worth keeping.

That’s awesome. I’m sure there would be some level of value associated with it amongst GB fans. I’m a pretty big GB fan and I’ve never even seen that before, so I’m sure it’s on the rare side.

  7. I spotted a bottle of VW 12 year at a London bar last night and was curious to see what they were asking for a pour. €12.50 for a single and €25 for a double.

    I quite enjoyed my double.

  8. We got a bottle of the double barrel JD special release and it was universally despised. I don’t know what they were shooting for with that one but it didn’t work at all. It almost tasted like BBQ a and not in a good way.

  9. Still Austin is twice the whiskey GB is at half the cost.

Still is better than GB, but this isn’t an either/or situation. I have both brands in my bar and I’m happy about that. I don’t know why everyone still has to come out of the woodwork to shit on GB pricing 13 years later. It is what it is.
  10. Yes, for some there is that opportunity to turn it into a means to generate profit. I am also an avid sneaker fan and I am frustrated as fuck with that culture too. On many an occasion I have said "I buy sneakers to wear them and whiskeys to drink them.", and I don't foresee a scenario where that ever changes. It's not that I don't have the means, but I am not interested in contributing to that side of the culture in any way, shape, form or fashion. That just feels gross to me. There are a ton of ways to turn a nickel into a quarter, and I'm not interested in using things I am personally passionate about to do it.

  11. My view is that we've crossed a line such that proximity/access to the product is now a bigger focus than the product itself. Or at least that's true for many. People just want to rack up fictional "equity" for being in the general atmosphere of rare products more than they want to drink high quality product that is readily available. And look, I'm not at all butt hurt that I don't have access to bottle XYZ. I bought (at MSRP) and killed the Van Winkle 23 "Family Selection" that went for $50k in a charity auction last year. It was unquestionably phenomenal. But it didn't grant me any special powers, and it didn't redefine what good whiskey is for me either.

This whole bourbon explosion is just another symptom of how pervasive FOMO is in our culture. People inherently want that which they cannot have, but the truth is that those rare bottles of whiskey are just an exercise in the optimization of the final 1-2%. It'd be great if the product in the glass was the focus, but I'm not naive enough to believe that we're ever getting back to that point.

  12. He’s right. It won’t help for a long time. It’s popular with the late majority now, and it’s going to take many years for another spirit to come along and grab their attention.

  13. God I can't stand that ascot wearing asshat. If the cost of having access to that bar included listening to him for any amount of time, I'd have to think long and hard about making that deal.

Not that anyone is about to invite my grumpy ass to something like that, but still.

  14. If your local Total Wine has this, absolutely get it.
    It’s phenomenal.

I concur. The Total by my house went ten deep on that bottle. I picked up the one so as not to be a hypocrite. But it’s really excellent.
