Major college coach believes possible end of walk-on programs would be an "atrocity" College football rosters might expand to 105 scholarships but walk-ons may vanish John Brice 16 hours ago ----------------------- It's a potential catch-22 for the sport that features a starting 11 on each side of the field. College football is moving closer to a potential reality that allows member programs at the sport's highest, Football Bowls Subdivision level to fully fund 105-person scholarship rosters. The current limit is 85, and teams can carry up to 120 with walk-on players typically comprising a critical, if unheralded, component of the ecosystem. As the sport pushes into the future on the heels of Judge Claudia Wilken's preliminary approval last month of the House vs. NCAA settlement, revenue sharing and potential roster expansion could arrive as soon as next summer. But those 20 extra scholarships could also mean the end of walk-on programs throughout the sport. Count Auburn coach Hugh Freeze among those in vehement opposition to such a course. "I think it would absolutely be an atrocity for there not to be [a walk-on program in college football,]" Freeze said on Wednesday's SEC teleconference. "Some of the greatest stories that we've heard of and that I've actually been a part of is just seeing the successes of walk-ons. "Whether it's them going from a walk-on to a scholarship or just the success that they have after football." Freeze, echoing sentiments from another coach this week telling FootballScoop that some of his program's greatest Name, Image and Likeness resources, as well as help in capital investments for facilities come from walk-ons, believes a move that eliminates some of a program's most unsung contributors could be a path that eliminates some of its most generous benefactors. "They (walk-ons) are typically probably more of the ones that come back and give back more, because of what they learned and what it meant to them," Freeze said. "I just ... Man, the thought of that occurring doesn't sit well with any coaches."

Lane Kiffin on absurd college reality: What if NBA, NFL had free agency during season Captain Candid, Kiffin buries college football's current roster system John Brice 16 hours ago It's more than the snark. It's the candor. It is that within ever zinger, each one-liner, Lane Kiffin is delivering a pointed message and/or seeking to generate a thought process. During Wednesday's weekly SEC coaches Zoom, Kiffin's ability to paint a stark picture and poke holes in the current college football roster ecosystem. Is there roster-tampering? Kiffin reveals how the current landscape allows actions to drift far beyond tampering. And de facto free agency in the sport, via the NCAA Transfer Portal and the absence of all guardrails on the now legal pay-for-play approaches? Kiffin notes the upcoming roster-churning calendar isn't even synched; the early signing period next month runs from Dec 4-6 but the NCAA Transfer Portal window for football runs from Dec. 9-28. The first-ever, 12-team College Football Playoff doesn't begin until a single game on Dec. 20 and three more the next day. "They're creating these free-agency windows and then they have them before a season's not even over," Kiffin says. "So, they're just basically inviting kids to wonder mentally and to get tampered with, because when the windows are and people are still trying playing. "Can you imagine in the NBA or NFL, free agency were to start in the playoffs? I mean, it would never happen. I don't know that it's probably talked about, but just think about that for a little bit." In addition to trying to keep his team focusing on the present, with hope springing anew for a CFP bid after last week's resounding win against Georgia, Kiffin also works with his staff to try and guard against the creep of external influences. "That's just part, again, of an extremely flawed system. Like the question earlier about tampering; not just they tamper, they go and offer money and numbers," he says. "So, you've got young kids going, 'Wait, so I can go and make that much money somewhere else if I go in the Portal and leave?' "We don't have enough time in this call for all the problems in the system and not thought-out it was. It's a very reactionary system. Even the tweaks a lot of times are just reactionary instead of thought out." First-year Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby also is willing to speak out against the outlaw methods pervasive among the current college football system. "It’s going on," Lebby says of roster tampering. "There are guys on our football team right now that are going through that. "Again, until that is managed and policed at the highest level, to me, there’s nothing that are going to stop people from doing it." With jurisdiction beyond his scope, Kiffin is candid about his approach until changes are made. "I don't really worry about what I can't control. I mean, that happens a lot," Kiffin says of tampering. "Just try to keep our guys focused. Again, it's a really poorly thought-out system of the windows and where they are. People tamper all the time. "So, we just try to maximize the really poor system that's been set up and try to avoid the distractions."

Yeah unless Notre Dame loses another game, Texas likely has to win their next 3 games to earn a spot in the CFP playoffs... -
Scipio Tex on Florida Game Defensive Line Ball don’t lie, but box scores do. Especially on defense. If you scanned it and saw that #95 Alfred Collins had only two tackles, you might question his impact. As with Mukuba, I picked the right time to highlight Collins’ recent run of dominance. I pointed out that he had a penchant for destroying double teams that led to short yardage stops and his affinity for altering QB throws with his length and pressure. Alfred singlehandedly created two interceptions with batted balls that led to Texas touchdowns and then added a big 3rd down stop dominating a Florida double team in the red zone for a zero yard gain that prevented Florida from going for it on 4th down. That forced a missed field goal attempt. He contributed directly to a 18-21 point shift. Those two picks led to 14 points and robbing Florida of a 3rd down conversion and an ensuing missed field goal is worth +4 or +7. Pretty good stuff from #95. Trey Moore had another good game. He had a sack (not credited due to QB getting to the LOS -whatever!), a terrific recognition play on a TE screen, recovered a fumble and was generally all over the field. Back to back weeks of high level play. Broughton was OK after serving his first half suspension. Neither he or Lole enjoyed the constant double teams and the physicality of their OL as run blockers. Sydir Mitchell got in for ten snaps and had two nice run stuffs. Very happy for him and I hope it’s a building block for doing things right and getting more playing time. Sorrell and Burke had quiet games. Simmons was much more impactful on rewatch than I realized. He’s learning to play the run more honestly and he had two big QB hits on pass rush.

Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava is in concussion protocol heading into a critical matchup against Georgia on Saturday, per ESPN's Pete Thamel. Iamaleava exited the first half of the Vols' win over Mississippi State on Saturday and did not return for the remainder of the contest. According to Thamel, Iamaleava practiced on Tuesday, but his status for Saturday's meeting in Athens is undetermined. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said after the game that leaving Iamaleava off the field in the second half on Saturday was a "precautionary measure" and that he'd be "ready roll next Saturday." After Monday's practice, Heupel once again reiterated that Iamaleava could be ready to go by Saturday. "He was with us today, had a really good day," Heupel said, per 247Sports' Patrick Brown. "Feel like he'll be in great shape for Saturday, but you guys can monitor whatever the report is that comes out on Wednesday and track it through the week. But certainly feel like he'll be in a good spot." Tennessee will release SEC-mandated availability reports on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, which will give more insight into Iamaleava's status as the matchup gets closer. Iamaleava, the No. 3 nationally ranked player in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports Composite, has 1,879 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions through nine games. The redshirt freshman has also picked up 215 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Last week in the first half against Mississippi State, he threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-13 passing. Backup quarterback Gaston Moore replaced Iamaleava in the second half and completed five of his eight passes for 38 passing yards. Should Iamaleava be unable to play against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Moore would presumably start in his place. The No. 7 Vols' matchup with No. 3 Georgia on Saturday comes with plenty of College Football Playoff and SEC championship implications. Should Tennessee leave Athens with a win, it would likely clinch a CFP spot so long as the Vols take care of business against UTEP and Vanderbilt to close out the year. Tennessee could also get one step closer to securing a trip to the SEC championship with the win as it currently sits in the driver's seat in the conference at 5-1. Winning the high-stakes game would be significantly harder without Iamaleava on the field.
