When you create jobs whose sole purpose is to bitch about shit, you get people bitching about stupid shit.

It's a distraction maneuver - both for us and for him.  Give him and us something shiny to concentrate on.

In pretty much every country but the U.S. it is illegal for them to take your card. I still hear people saying they'd rather swipe instead of using the chip because it takes longer. Enjoy your 5 to 10 seconds I guess.

It's funny, I still occasionally do the swipe automatically and then get told by the machine to insert the card.  Muscle memory, I guess.  But the cashier always gets suspicious...

I think they had to send them in.  No picture but at one time merchants had a phone book sized list of stolen cards and were supposed to check any card purchase against the list before allowing them to charge.

You took them to your commercial banker.  Depending on your arrangement they gave you a provisional credit until they cleared for all or part of the total.  The bank would then send them to the credit card company for processing.  The more business you did the better your "advance" terms.

Some smaller merchants got really screwed - if you didn't do enough business you didn't get funds until the card fully cleared, meaning you might wait a month for the money.

  4. There are lots of freaky-ass "documentaries" on there if you find that shit entertaining.  Watched a doc called "The Spirit Molecule" where Joe Rogan was "hosting" and a bunch of scientists were advocating using DMT.  Another one called "Patient Seventeen" where some crazy-ass doctor claimed he was removing alien implants from people.

Also pretty good one called "El Fin de ETA" about the Basque separatists.

  5. I’m not sure declining attendance is a bad thing.  I know this is very pollyanna, but I just think it’s been too commoditized and made into a hyped-up, national league where people who have never set foot on campus have favorite teams and root for schools they know nothing about. I don’t like the playoff for that reason- it helps make the sport into an alternative NFL.   I don’t like that those loser sports radio “Bald Asshole with Eastern Seaboard Accent who wears NBA jerseys” shows discuss college sports just like pro sports. I don’t like that people watch some 17-year old’s hat selection press conference. I don’t like not even being able to lie to myself that the superstar kids are there even partially for an education.

FWIW, basketball is just so much worse.

I’d be completely fine with a college football and basketball landscape like baseball, where if you really don’t want to do anything but try out and train for the pros, you go to the minor leagues and skip college.   I know that the CWS winner typically wouldn’t beat a good AA club, but that’s OK.

I’d also be fine siting with 70-80,000 people who feel connected to the game rather than 110,000 people who have corporate tickets, are entertaining clients, and are treating it like the hospitality tent at the Byron Nelson.

    This was surprising:

In 2017 the fewest people showed up to watch the Mountaineers beat down FCS opponent Delaware State (85.8%), while the other game under 90% capacity came against Texas (88.56%).

    Cold 11am game?  I dunno.

Dadgum - I had that thing!  Don't even remember what it did - a number guessing game maybe?

It played a bunch of games - Tic-Tac-Toe, a ripoff of mastermind, a version of Simon, and even a weird blackjack.  Or you could just push the buttons in the backseat and annoy your patents while they drove.

  8. Why engage with this guy?  It's exactly what he wants - to be relevant in some way.

If he lights it up, the fact is we should have taken him just like everyone else.  If he doesn't, he will be forgotten in 18 months.
