We aren't talking enough about how Ketch said Sunday that he expected the Rod Wright hire to be finalized in the next 24-48 hours. He whiffed again.

Nothing to talk about, Ketch is literally wrong 100% of the time. I honestly can't remember the last time he correctly predicted something before it happened.

Pretty sure we primarily have Tim Beck to thank for that one. And several others.

Okay sorry everyone, I'm done posting irrelevant stuff in this thread now. But I had to make sure Bijan's legacy is properly understood

With XF being a 4 star now, the same thing seemed to happen to Kobe black. I thought he was a 5 star then all of the sudden the last two months he’s a 4 star. Wingo and Simmons were really the only ones that didn’t drop a ton once they were assumed/committed.

Filsaime is still a composite five star, unless there was a recent ratings update that isn't showing for some reason.

Just curious? Did ROJO, DMO and Bijan "quit" on the team last year? Or did they do what's best for them and their future? It was a loss and most people believe Texas would have won had they not sat out.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but surely you can see the difference between the Alamo Bowl and a playoff semifinal.

Question is...does CCG mvp change Quinn's decision on coming back next year? The list of quality QB's (or perceived quality) coming out this year hasn't gotten shorter.

I had that thought too, but the fact that Thamel (the Ewers family's personal mouthpiece) tweeted this morning about him likely returning, I'd be surprised if today's outcome changes that.

In a vacuum, a three-point road loss to a top-10 Ole Miss team while on your backup quarterback would be a complete non-factor on the recruiting front. A snapshot of the game all by itself would indicate an uptick in offensive production, while the defensive performance would be written off as an outlier.

I love this logic. Good thing happens? Positive trend. Bad thing happens? Write it off as an outlier.

IT team update. Seems like Chip's injury stuff yesterday may have some validity.

There is plenty of optimism heading into this game but there are some new concerns we’ll gently hint on at the end. For many, it will render the rest of this post moot but we’re going to write the whole thing anyway.

This is the biggest game in DKR since, well, I’m not sure, but it’s been a long time. This game is essentially a Big 12 Championship semifinal and it was treated as such.

    Red Zone Focus

A central focus of the week was red zone and physicality. Steve Sarkisian was taking no prisoners with his laser focused instruction on red zone scheming and teaching. I have no idea how successful Texas will be against Kansas State’s red zone defense but I do know the head coach and offensive staff are not lacking for effort.

Practice this week, especially in that regard, was detailed, organized, and extra focused. Sometimes there are some light-hearted moments but not this week.

Sources state we’ll see some different looks and plays this week but we’re not vouching for whether or not they’ll work.

    Quarterbacks

Maalik Murphy‘s week got off to a bit of a rough start, particularly on Monday, but he had a good finish to the week, particularly on Thursday. After gaining some experience last Saturday he’s as confident, and sources say as ready, as he’ll ever be.

Murphy seems to understand he just needs to get the ball to his playmakers and let them do the work. They have the ability to make his job easier.

Quinn Ewers threw the ball while in pads starting on Monday but he’s not truly practicing. That may be a good sign for his eventual return, however.

Back to this week and the most important game of the remaining year.

Texas needs big games out of…

We asked a source for some key players to the game. Obviously everyone has to play well, and that became truer as the week went on…[ominous music].

Here are a handful of players who can greatly improve Texas’ chances of winning.

Maalik Murphy: If he takes care of the ball and hits the open receiver this game could easily fall into place.

Jaylan Ford: Kansas State has differing run schemes its comfortable running with four different quality runners. Ford should be kept clean to find the ball carrier.

Jonathon Brooks: Pretty obvious, Texas needs a big game on the ground against a susceptible K-State defense.

T’Vondre Sweat: The source also mentioned Byron Murphy. One of them neutralizes K-State’s great guard Cooper Beebe, the other blows plays up.

Adonai Mitchell: Xavier Worthy is going to see constant safety help over the top. This should allow Mitchell room to operate. Mitchell has been both a big play receiver and red zone receiver. The source also mentioned Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Ryan Watts: I was surprised to hear Watts over Jahdae Barron but Will Howard may try to stretch the field to create room for K-State’s run game. In any event, they need a big game from Barron, too, but that’s what he do.

    Sources of optimism

Kansas State is a familiar opponent that doesn’t change a whole lot, especially since what they run has been working. K-State coach Chris Klieman essentially said the same thing on Tuesday. Sure, they’ll have some wrinkles on offense and defense, and probably attempt a trick play or two, but familiarity should help Texas play fast and confident.

The source continued, everyone knows how important the game is but he still feels the players will play fast and loose.

    Injury Gods

Edge Ethan Burke returned to practice and looked okay given the layoff. Texas needs him back helping to set the edge but even if he’s not 100% Texas should have some answers for the K-State run game.

When it comes to injuries this wasn’t a great week. For obvious reasons we can’t go into detail, or even hint yet, but needless to say this is a week where the team needs to rally together and lift their level of play in order to fight their way to victory. The coaches also have to put them in the best positions to do so.

All things considered, the game tomorrow presents the most adverse circumstances for Texas year to date.

If you’re attending the game do your part and be loud.

I know Maalik didn't practice Tuesday, wonder if it's him?

Interior Oline was bad, and Banks even gave up a sack. This will probably always be the relative weakness of the team but it needs to improve to “able to work/scheme around it” and I didn’t see that yesterday.

I haven't seen a replay of the play yet but I'm gonna assume Tope is right here.

I already know that the halftime adjustment thing is going to be the most overused cliche of the season along with where the corners line up on 3rd and 4th down. If we are down by 1 to Bama at half and come back and win it's because we made halftime adjustments! If we are ahead by 1 at the half and lose on a field goal at the buzzer it is because we didn't make halftime adjustments!

How much face time do you think coaches get with each other and the players in a 20-minute halftime once everyone files into the locker room, coaches get down from the press box, everyone takes a piss and players get any treatment needed from the training staff? The actual time spent in front of a whiteboard in the locker room is maybe maybe 6-7 minutes at most. The notion that you can just sit down and review what a team showed in the first half and draw up plays to counter it in the second half is a major stretch. You can make a few minor tweaks to your original gameplan, give the team a rah-rah speech and it's back out on the field.

If you think second halves need to be better than that's a preparation thing that needs to be fixed on Sunday through Friday and not during a brief intermission in the middle of the game.

Last season Peyton Manning said the same thing on one of his MNF broadcasts. He said that the significance of halftime adjustments is way overblown and that most of halftime is basically spent waiting for the coaches to get down from the box to the locker room.
