IT team update. Seems like Chip's injury stuff yesterday may have some validity.
There is plenty of optimism heading into this game but there are some new concerns we’ll gently hint on at the end. For many, it will render the rest of this post moot but we’re going to write the whole thing anyway.
This is the biggest game in DKR since, well, I’m not sure, but it’s been a long time. This game is essentially a Big 12 Championship semifinal and it was treated as such.
Red Zone Focus
A central focus of the week was red zone and physicality. Steve Sarkisian was taking no prisoners with his laser focused instruction on red zone scheming and teaching. I have no idea how successful Texas will be against Kansas State’s red zone defense but I do know the head coach and offensive staff are not lacking for effort.
Practice this week, especially in that regard, was detailed, organized, and extra focused. Sometimes there are some light-hearted moments but not this week.
Sources state we’ll see some different looks and plays this week but we’re not vouching for whether or not they’ll work.
Quarterbacks
Maalik Murphy‘s week got off to a bit of a rough start, particularly on Monday, but he had a good finish to the week, particularly on Thursday. After gaining some experience last Saturday he’s as confident, and sources say as ready, as he’ll ever be.
Murphy seems to understand he just needs to get the ball to his playmakers and let them do the work. They have the ability to make his job easier.
Quinn Ewers threw the ball while in pads starting on Monday but he’s not truly practicing. That may be a good sign for his eventual return, however.
Back to this week and the most important game of the remaining year.
Texas needs big games out of…
We asked a source for some key players to the game. Obviously everyone has to play well, and that became truer as the week went on…[ominous music].
Here are a handful of players who can greatly improve Texas’ chances of winning.
Maalik Murphy: If he takes care of the ball and hits the open receiver this game could easily fall into place.
Jaylan Ford: Kansas State has differing run schemes its comfortable running with four different quality runners. Ford should be kept clean to find the ball carrier.
Jonathon Brooks: Pretty obvious, Texas needs a big game on the ground against a susceptible K-State defense.
T’Vondre Sweat: The source also mentioned Byron Murphy. One of them neutralizes K-State’s great guard Cooper Beebe, the other blows plays up.
Adonai Mitchell: Xavier Worthy is going to see constant safety help over the top. This should allow Mitchell room to operate. Mitchell has been both a big play receiver and red zone receiver. The source also mentioned Ja’Tavion Sanders.
Ryan Watts: I was surprised to hear Watts over Jahdae Barron but Will Howard may try to stretch the field to create room for K-State’s run game. In any event, they need a big game from Barron, too, but that’s what he do.
Sources of optimism
Kansas State is a familiar opponent that doesn’t change a whole lot, especially since what they run has been working. K-State coach Chris Klieman essentially said the same thing on Tuesday. Sure, they’ll have some wrinkles on offense and defense, and probably attempt a trick play or two, but familiarity should help Texas play fast and confident.
The source continued, everyone knows how important the game is but he still feels the players will play fast and loose.
Injury Gods
Edge Ethan Burke returned to practice and looked okay given the layoff. Texas needs him back helping to set the edge but even if he’s not 100% Texas should have some answers for the K-State run game.
When it comes to injuries this wasn’t a great week. For obvious reasons we can’t go into detail, or even hint yet, but needless to say this is a week where the team needs to rally together and lift their level of play in order to fight their way to victory. The coaches also have to put them in the best positions to do so.
All things considered, the game tomorrow presents the most adverse circumstances for Texas year to date.
If you’re attending the game do your part and be loud.
I know Maalik didn't practice Tuesday, wonder if it's him?

Interior Oline was bad, and Banks even gave up a sack. This will probably always be the relative weakness of the team but it needs to improve to “able to work/scheme around it” and I didn’t see that yesterday.
I haven't seen a replay of the play yet but I'm gonna assume Tope is right here.

That would be nice.
Posting JD Pickell here is a rough sign for this board's overall IQ. That dude spews more words without actually saying anything than any other pundit I've listened to.

You know, I hadn't thought about it like that, but fuck it, why not win all 20 conference championships? I like what CDC is selling here.

I already know that the halftime adjustment thing is going to be the most overused cliche of the season along with where the corners line up on 3rd and 4th down. If we are down by 1 to Bama at half and come back and win it's because we made halftime adjustments! If we are ahead by 1 at the half and lose on a field goal at the buzzer it is because we didn't make halftime adjustments!
How much face time do you think coaches get with each other and the players in a 20-minute halftime once everyone files into the locker room, coaches get down from the press box, everyone takes a piss and players get any treatment needed from the training staff? The actual time spent in front of a whiteboard in the locker room is maybe maybe 6-7 minutes at most. The notion that you can just sit down and review what a team showed in the first half and draw up plays to counter it in the second half is a major stretch. You can make a few minor tweaks to your original gameplan, give the team a rah-rah speech and it's back out on the field.
If you think second halves need to be better than that's a preparation thing that needs to be fixed on Sunday through Friday and not during a brief intermission in the middle of the game.
Last season Peyton Manning said the same thing on one of his MNF broadcasts. He said that the significance of halftime adjustments is way overblown and that most of halftime is basically spent waiting for the coaches to get down from the box to the locker room.

I've heard zero buzz about this guy. Seems like we're just a hat on the table.
That's my thought too. So I guess Justin and Eric are just pulling those 30/35% confidence numbers out of their asses.

Watching a bit of his tape kid's got more tools than Bob Vila but is there any video of him working more than just a speed rush? Would be nice if the staff could work with the staff at Duncanville to get him started on a changeup rush move to work off of the speed rush to get him a head start on technique coming into spring or fall camp next year. Going to need more than just speed against the SEC tackles.
I had the same thought. His tape shows tremendous speed and excellent bend, but I don't think his junior year Hudl shows a single play where he won with technique. Obviously that's the case for pretty much every freak edge coming out of high school because they just never had to develop any moves, but it definitely stands out.

Good management would be the opposite. Sark should lean into his strength as an OC. It's his defining feature, biggest competitive advantage as a coach, and what got him where he is. Hire a special assistant to have a second set of eyes on in-game management so he can keep calling plays (which I think they did this year IIRC?).
I believe that's the role Paul Chryst is expected to fill (at least part of his role, anyway).

Did Roach ever say what his "interesting positive news" was for Simmons from a couple of days ago?

Hmmm, call me crazy, but the University of Texas miiight have a better computer science program than *checks notes*…
LSU (lol)This got me thinking - how much influence can the AD have on admissions for the more competitive majors? CS is the hardest major to get into so I wonder how that would work. Don't see recruits trying to go that route very often.
Of course I know nothing about him as a student so certainly not trying to downgrade McKinley's chances right off the bat, I just know that there are some insanely smart kids that can't get into that major.
