Collin's Corner: Breaking down the Damonic Williams sweepstakes out of the OU visit (4/22)

The Oklahoma spring game has come and gone. Obviously the overall attention was placed on the field, but those who follow things closely know the weekend featured a ton of emphasis on who was actually visiting for the scrimmage.

That included, of course, Damonic Williams. One of the top transfer defensive tackle available in the portal was in Norman for the weekend.

The latest? A breakdown of the race? That right here:

    - We'll start with the name everyone wants to discuss. Damonic Williams wrapped up his trip to Norman yesterday and now the great wait begins.

Williams had a productive multi-day visit at Oklahoma, getting to spend plenty of time with the staff. Multiple meetings were had between Williams and the Sooners' coaches, several conversations that placed Oklahoma in a quality standing. Also worth noting that Williams did spend a good amount of time with fellow transfer portal defensive tackle target Jermayne Lole, but more on him in a second.

As far as Williams, let's be transparent: The price tag is going to be steep, as is well-known. But early hearings indicate Oklahoma is more than willing to play ball to the best of its ability.

That being said, the big thing many around this portal recruitment were keeping an eye out for was a continued visit schedule. Williams has started to make it known that he does plan to take more trips, the next one being to Texas.

The Longhorns are an interesting study as it relates to the potential impact on this portal process. Williams has been linked to Texas for several reasons, but there are a few things to work through here.

Can Texas work through the NIL game here? Sure. Are the Longhorns willing to? Tough to say for sure, especially with Texas still in the driver's seat with two other transfer portal defensive tackles. That's a lot of investment into one specific group, so striking that balance will be part of the equation. Then there's Williams' side. Would he be willing to potentially join a room that might be adding two other proven defensive tackle talents? What might be the NIL figures that'd get Williams to be comfortable with that setting? Williams' time in Austin begins tomorrow.

Then, beyond Oklahoma and Texas, other contenders are preparing to take their shot at Williams. One program that many have kept an eye on is Missouri, the Tigers likely to get him on campus soon. We reported before the weekend that some behind the scenes felt Williams would likely cancel one of his original visits then slot either Missouri or Oregon into the slate, it sounds like the Tigers could replace Colorado in Williams' schedule. Missouri

Oregon is still hovering, but waiting to get word on a visit timeframe. LSU also remains on the schedule, but the current read I get is that people feel other programs are in better position than the Tigers as things currently stand.

Oklahoma, for lack of better term, placed itself in the 'lead'. But with Williams leaving campus, uncommitted and planning to examine other programs, this is where the numerous variables of a portal process kick in. Williams is going to examine these programs largely based on things like future NFL Draft potential, playing time and development plus NIL opportunities all relative to his final two years of eligibility. Oklahoma presented a strong pitch, but now Williams will be hearing out the other heavy hitters involved.

    - Gerry said he didn't agree with Oklahoma's optimism regarding landing Damonic Williams

    - Bobby then referred to Gerry putting Texas' chances of landing Williams at 51% (BOW posted the text blurb on this from OTF, in the Texas thread)

    - Damonic's (still) expected to visit Texas Tue/Wed

    Me?

    - I want Toia

    - I want Damonic W

    - I want the Mich DTs

    - and I want Bill Norton.  At DT.  Or to manage Accounts Receivable.  With his characteristic efficiency and panache.

TRAMON MARK, FROM ARKANSAS TO TEXAS

New Longhorn Tramon Mark (Photo: Petre Thomas, USA TODAY Sports)
Tramon Mark entered the transfer portal in the 2023 cycle looking for a featured role with the ball in his hands. He got it at Arkansas. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound wing parlayed the highest usage rate of his career into one of the best individual seasons of his career. Mark totaled 16.2 points per game with career-best shooting splits across the board.

But he didn't win. Arkansas (16-17, 6-12 in SEC play) was one of the bigger disappointments this past season.

Arkansas' bumpy road can be Texas' smooth sailing.

A former Houston rotation staple, Mark didn't suddenly turn into a losing player at Arkansas. Everything that could've gone wrong with the Hogs in 2023-24, went wrong.

Mark returns to his roots in the Lone Star State as a new and improved version of himself. Rodney Terry is getting one of the best isolation scorers in the country who shot over 73% at the rim which was one of the top marks nationally. Mark was also extremely efficient in pick-and-rolls this past season. He can create offense for himself in waves. Mark drew 4.9 fouls per 40 minutes and shot 80% at the stripe. He also splashed a career-best 36% from downtown on 99 attempts.

Simply put, Mark checks off a bunch of boxes on both ends. He's the rangy, ball-handling, shot-creating wing that Texas' roster really didn't have last year. He's a fifth-year veteran who will sit down and guard and take some pressure off five-star freshman wing Tre Johnson.

    Mark to Texas just works.

    - QB Husan Longstreet committed to the Aggies

    - On the negative side, that means Auburn - who was after Longstreet - will continue to pursue Lacey

    - On the positive side, A&M getting Longstreet should help us sell Russell on coming in as a second QB

Here's a note from Auburn 247, on their QB recruiting (post Longstreet's commitment)

    Resetting Auburn's QB recruiting board

    Christian Clemente (Auburn 247)

Auburn's quarterback recruiting continues on in the 2025 cycle after Husan Longstreet, the Top247 signal-caller from Centennial (Cal.), announced his commitment to Texas A&M on Sunday. Visiting twice in the spring, including for an official visit on A-Day weekend, the Tigers staff chipped into a big Texas A&M lead and made things interesting all the way until a few hours before his commitment when he made his decision.

Don't expect Auburn to take its foot off the gas all the way with Longstreet, though the main focus will likely start to turn toward other, more attainable targets.

Breaking down the names on the quarterback board and the latest intel in Auburn's pursuit:

5-star Julian "JuJu" Lewis | Carrollton, Ga. | USC commit

It's really been 1A and 1B with Longstreet and Lewis for Auburn at quarterback over the last couple of months. With Longstreet's choice, Lewis now clearly sits atop the board as the biggest name to know in Auburn's pursuit of a quarterback. Committing to USC last August, Lewis was then ranked as the No. 1 player in the country in the 2026 class. He has since reclassified and remained a 5-star prospect and ranked as a top-five quarterback in the 2025 class.

While Lewis once felt like a pipedream when considering Auburn, sources have indicated a rising interest from Lewis and his camp in the Tigers and a rising sense of optimism from Auburn's side on being able to potentially pull off a flip. Lewis recently scheduled four summer official visits, hitting Georgia, USC, Auburn and Colorado in that order, with Alabama as another team in the mix.

4-star KJ Lacey | Saraland, Ala. | Texas commit

Auburn has pretty consistently had three in the top tier, with the in-state Lacey just a hair behind the likes of Longstreet and Lewis. Committed to Texas since last June, flipping Lacey isn't going to be easy, but Auburn, Ole Miss and Oregon are all making an effort. If anyone has the best chance, it's the Tigers, where he's visited the most and is just a few hours away.

Lacey continues to say the right things about his commitment to the Longhorns, but with Arch Manning on roster and set to likely take over as the starter right as Lacey would be coming in, Auburn has the opportunity to sell a quicker, easier path to playing time.

4-star Madden Iamaleava | Warren, Cal.

A newer name to know, the younger brother of Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava was one that considered visiting this spring and is one worth tracking. As of right now the likes of Nebraska and UCLA are considered the favorites and it's unclear just how big of a target Iamaleava actually is on Auburn's board. Still, it's noteworthy that he was a potential spring visitor and is one we'll be tracking.

It'd be surprising if Auburn didn't get one of Lewis or Lacey at this rate, though.
