Few other countries have comparable ties with the U.S.It’s an interesting thought experiment to try to determine how much media coverage it would get if any other country passed a similar law. I’m guessing not a ton. -
Glad it worked out for him. Sounds like the professor is a fucking idiot. It didn't occur to him that he may have the wrong email address? If I don't get an expected response I always double check I had the correct email address. Rage.Glad to provide a happy update. He ended up with just a warning because of some mitigating circumstances.- The assignment was the same -- essentially, describe how assigned reading [x] makes you feel -- and he felt essentially the same way, as might be expected. Somewhere between "very little" and "around half" of the assignment was copied over, depending on if you count using the same quotes from the assigned reading.
- Because of the similarities, the prof wanted to ask follow-up questions about his new response, so the prof emailed BIL (online class; can't talk after class). Problem is, the prof emailed his UT email address when both the UT student directory and the prof's "fill out this contact/background info" sheet at the beginning of the semester had BIL's gmail address. So the professor emailed the wrong address in follow-up, got frustrated after feeling he was being ignored and turned him in.
- When the hearing came, BIL pointed out his GPA, pointed out that he never had any history of academic misconduct back through high school, and that he had other profs lined up to serve as a reference for him. He also offered to re-do the assignment with the caveat that he would change the form, but the substance would be similar because he truly feels the same way about the assigned reading.
- The prof tried to flex by asking BIL why he ignored emails from his prof, including as recently as just a few weeks prior.
- BIL said he received no such emails and that he would happily show his gmail inbox, spam, and deleted items folders to the committee.
- Prof tried to shazam him by showing printouts of the emails from prof to BIL's UT address.
- BIL went into [Chalkboard/blackboard/whatever learning management program UT uses] and pulled up the "assignment" that was the prof's own contact info sheet, as well as the UT student directory, both of which showed that the gmail address was how to get ahold of him.
- There was a collective "ooh, so that's what happened..." from the hearing people and they gave him the absolute minimum allowed under the applicable rules, once something has reached the hearing phase. Not sure if the "warning" was verbal or written and didn't follow up with my BIL or my wife.
So he ended up with a warning with no adverse effect on his grade for the semester and no requirement to re-do the assignment or otherwise do anything else.
THanks again to everyone for your thoughts and help.-

@Orale, not to threadjack, but how old are you? Because I'm a young Gen X-er and we played "Smear the Queer" a lot in school. Mainly I'm asking because 1) I'm interested in how the word changed, 2) I'm fascinated and excited that the connotation changed so quickly, 3) I'm a high school teacher and I love how LGBTQ+ students are much more accepted by their peers than they were when I was in school, and 4) I just want to get a gauge on how old I actually am.
We played smear the queer when I was a kid too. I completely forgot about that. I feel like faggot was the more common slur when I was growing up and queer was just a strange word that wasn't used much in any context. At least not among my peers.

Totally. I'm a relatively young homo and love the word and use it freely. I honestly didn't know it had been a slur in the past.Queer is an amazing example of reclaiming. The conversation to add Q to LGBT within HRC nomenclature was highly emotional precisely because queer was a slur for most of the leadership, but the young people have taken it back in less than a generation or two. It has been so successful the term is now available to allies to use as well. It can still be a slur but it’s fast becoming anything but that. Fascinating to me. -

I know fuck all about that but I’d ask about altitude (how recently did you move there) and if you run 7 treadmill miles or 7 outdoor miles.
Outdoor miles. 3.5 weeks ago.

Not sure where to put this so I'll ask here. I recently moved to Salt Lake City and saw this morning in the news that there's a marathon going on Saturday. I regularly run about 7 miles a day in addition to light weights and walking my dog a few miles a day. So I'm in pretty good cardio shape. I'm intrigued by the route which is a long gradual descent down a mountain.
I was thinking I might sign up for the 13.1 mile half marathon race to try something new. Being as it's this Saturday, I've done no training for it. But I wonder, considering how much I run, if that's really necessary or if I'm being naive. For as much as I run, I've never actually gone further than 8 miles. Dumb idea?

I rarely get offended by anything. But I feel protective of those in society who are vulnerable. When I hear someone use cruel language that has historically been used to oppress and demean a vulnerable group, I'm not going to get in their face (assuming they're not actually using it towards someone in that group directly), but I sure as hell will think that person is a piece of shit and think much less of their character. I'm far from perfect and I think people can change and improve, so I try not to shame others or even judge them too harshly in my mind. But I think it's fair and healthy to be offended by certain language and behavior if its motive is to be cruel.

@Orale still looking at your build and I have a few questions for you (none of which are meant to be critical).
Looking at the pic of roof, I see no soil vent stacks coming through. How are you venting the toilet, sinks and shower so they will drain? Exhaust point for a bathroom fart fan vent? Also, venting a range top? Are these to be installed before move in?
Did you consider fresh air intake since you have done the complete spray foam encapsulation?
Spray foaming the underside of your floor deck is a brilliant move for temp moderation and keeping the varmint s from scratching their way in.
No criticism taken. On the contrary, it's appreciated. I am very much an amateur builder and always trying to learn more. For the plumbing venting, I did an interior Oatey Sure Vent. I had heard the issue you mention about fresh air when spray foaming the envelope, but I don't really have an answer. I suppose I was counting on the occasional opening of the doors and windows. But that's a fair point. I'll have to think on how to address that to ensure good air quality.
The TH's are only going to have a countertop double induction top and maybe a countertop multi-mode air fryer for simple meals. They're not intended for elaborate cooking, and frankly, my family doesn't do much of that anyways. So we'll probably just open the windows over the kitchenette if we're not just eating out. Probably not ideal, but I'm trying to keep things simple for now while we see what works and what could use upgrading.

What wood are you using for the trim? Oak?

Well done! It's much harder than people think. The trim woodwork looks great as well.

@Orale that tiny house is awesome. how are you getting hot water? did you install a tankless water heater on the outside? and is the wastewater going in to a cesspit?
Thanks. We installed a tankless water heater initially but then realized that they draw a heavy amount of amperage versus a conventional small tank water heater. So we just built a little enclosure for a small tank water heater sitting on the front arms of the trailer. We installed a new water well and a septic system, more for a future conventional home we plan to eventually build but we have the tiny house hooked up to it.

Our deer camp bunk house is very similar.
Demo’d the old donor organ on site, put left over trailer frame and axles on a gooseneck and brought it back to the warehouse in Houston for the build. Left all the snakes, scorpions, centipedes and spiders roosting up in it on the rancho.
Towed it back out to rancho on the back of my truck. Squared and leveled it up, built a deck and cover to attach it to our trailer.
I was thinking about doing a corrugated metal skin siding with a kind of modern profile on one of our tiny houses. But I was worried my handyman wouldn't know how to work with it as he's primarily familiar with wood sidings. Maybe if we do a third one.

You showed a sea container but that doesn’t appear to be in the build pictures. Is that another tiny home to be or just a portable garage?
It's just for storage. Our handyman was hauling his tools to the site every day and we were locking building materials inside the tiny house or leaving them outside exposed to weather and potential theft. So we bought the container to store everything. We've needed one for the property for a long time. It was a single-use container (i.e., only used on a single trip from China or wherever) so it's in great condition and only cost a few grand delivered to the property. It's much more secure and weather safe than a wooden shed.
To answer your other question, we are building a second tiny house which is why one of the photos shows a second trailer with just the OSB subfloor and bottom wall plates on it. We're pretty close to being done. It'll have a slightly different board and batten skin.

Temp structure that can be relocated or used a guest quarters or sold out right. It’s not a bad idea for a tiny house.
That's right. We eventually want to build a larger home for R&R. The tiny house allows us to enjoy the land in the interim at a low cost in relative comfort, particularly for my retired folks.

Did you spray foam it yourself?
No, hired a local guy. About $2,300.

I'm frankly fine with it. If they don't want my business, I'll spend my money elsewhere. Plus I like knowing the person I might give my money to is a bigot.

I got one in an after Christmas sale for sweeping up dog hair. It did a good job but you have to spend time removing cords and other obstructions it can get stuck on plus the time to empty it and ensure it's charging properly. I ended up not using it much because I could sweep up the room faster than it took to prep it for the robo.
