  1. How a whole generation of 80's kids wasn't wiped out because of 3-wheelers is a miracle.

I remember when all this shit was going down:

There is a general misconception that 3-wheelers are banned. Even many 3-wheeler owners believe they are banned from future production. Many tabloid news shows tried to eliminate them by misleading hype and inaccurate facts. The media frenzy got the CPSC involved.

The CPSC in its report admitted that there was NO INHERENT design flaw with 3-wheelers. They further concluded that most accidents were due to operator error and predominantly by children on adult-sized machines.

In April of 1988, the five “Big” manufacturers agreed to the CONSENT DECREE ACT.

The Consent Decree Act expired in April 27, 1998. However, it only applied to manufacturers involved in the case. Those manufacturers included Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Polaris. No other manufacturer was bound by the Consent Decree Act until Arctic Cat joined on Sept 27, 1996.

On September 9, 1998, the ATV Action Plan was introduced. It basically extended the former Consent Decree Act on a Voluntary basis.

Yamaha, Kawasaki, American Suzuki, Polaris and Arctic Cat have voluntary agreed to participate. However, Arctic Cat has only agreed for 5 years. Also, any company can withdraw from the agreement with a 60-day notice.

Neither the Consent Decree Act nor the ATV Action Plan has ever applied to any other manufacturer.

In August of '08, the CPSC submitted proposition bill H.R. 4040. A bill primarily concerned with lead paint in children's toys. However, hidden in the multitude of pages of this bill, was a little known paragraph, effectively banning production 3-wheelers indefinitely. However, this bill which has since been passed into law, only concerns production-based 3-wheelers. Specifically it states "importation and distribution of new three wheeled ATV's. It does not include prototypes, conversions, or custom one-off 3-wheelers.

The bill also states that this is a temporary ban until industry standards can be set.

  2. If they both keep winning, I want to see China Spring vs. Carthage.  China Spring has already pounded Jasper and beat WOS.

Could be an interesting game. Carthage has beaten #3, #4 and #5. CS beat #2 and #4 and lost to #6.

    CS beat Jasper 45-19
    Carthage beat Jasper 35-18

Haven’t seen CS play but have seen a number of the top ten 4A teams play. Carthage is very, very good.

  3. We have a monthly test of the early warning system. Sometimes we can’t hear it depending on where we are in the house. Fortunately we have an early warning extender system.

    Early Warning Extender System.
Dual band receivers/transmitters with top mount antennas and built in loudspeakers pick up Early Warning broadcast from Local Fire station.

Warning is then audibly relayed to nearby neighborhood residences.

  4. You're actually thinking of the old freewheel system, where the ratchet mechanism was actually part of a cogset that fit on the hub.
The modern system is freehub + cassette where the ratchet is contained between the driver and the hub itself and the cassette cogset has no moving parts.  I think some in the roady community still call the driver a "cassette body" or some such.  MTBers call it a driver.
I don't know if roadies give much of a shit about the driver since they aren't chasing max spread cassettes, but there are now three "standards,"  old Shimano, SRAM xD, and Shimano Micro-Spline.  The latter two permit 9 or 10 tooth small cogs, the old Shimano is limited to 11.
And, as Kurdt mentioned, the loud droning is the product of having, I dunno, a 30+ tooth ratchet.  Some are still pretty quiet though.  Do roadies care about engagement to the same extent as MTBers?

King uses a ring drive system instead of pawls that engage teeth on the freewheel body. Onyx makes a sprague clutch roller bearing hub which means total silence and instantaneous engagement from freewheeling to pedaling.

John Rader, inventor of the Aheadset, designed one that Cane Creek manufactured for a while in the mid 90s. Still have a prototype on the wife’s Breezer.

  5. Had the urge to listen to listen to Philly native Todd Rundgren’s 1973 rock anthem this morning.

    “Just One Victory"

    We've been waiting so long,
    We've been waiting so long,
We've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine
Shining still to give us the will

Can you hear me, the sound of my voice?
I am here to tell you I have made my choice
I've been listening to what's been going down
There's just too much talk and gossip going 'round

You may think that I'm a fool, but I know the answer
Words become a tool, anyone can use them
Take the golden rule, as the best example
Eyes that have seen will know what I mean

The time has come to take the bull by the horns
(Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time)
We've been so downhearted, we've been so forlorn
(We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line)
We get weak and we want to give in
(Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time)
But we still need each other if we want to win
(We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line)

If you don't know what to do about a world of trouble
You can pull it through if you need to and if
You believe it's true, it will surely happen
Shining still, to give us the will

    We've been waiting so long,
    We've been waiting so long,
We've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine
Shining still to give us the will
Bright as the day, to show us the way

    Somehow, someday,
We need just one victory and we're on our way
Prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night
Give us just one victory, it will be all right

We may feel about to fall but we go down fighting
You will hear the call if you only listen
Underneath it all we are here together
Shining still to give us the will
Bright as the day, to show us the way

    Somehow, someday,
(Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time)
We need just one victory and we're on our way
(We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line)
Prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night
(Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time)
Give us just one victory, it will be all right
(We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line)
