Saturday update on Texas coaching staff searches

Just a quick update to say we’re hearing Tosh Lupoi is still in the mix - in some capacity - as a candidate to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Texas.

We’ve reported Lupoi has been offered the defensive line coaching position with the Dallas Cowboys by Dan Quinn. Lupoi coached the defensive line under Quinn last season with the Atlanta Falcons. Lupoi, who coached under Sarkisian at Washington (before going to Alabama and then to the NFL) would like at least a co-defensive coordinator title if he would return to college football, a source told Horns247.

We've reported Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett is someone Sarkisian was intrigued by after Sarkisian faced Arnett's defense in a 41-0 victory by the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on Halloween, sources told Horns247.

Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com reported Friday Arkansas' Barry Odom was still a defensive coordinator candidate under consideration by Sarkisian. We'd heard that Odom and Sarkisian talked a couple weeks ago and that if Odom was going to take another job, he'd like to bring at least one coach with him, a source close to the situation told Horns247.

According to our sources, Sarkisian has already hired Bo Davis as a defensive line coach, former Longhorn Blake Gideon as a position coach and Terry Joseph, a longtime secondary coach (most recently at Notre Dame), as a position coach.

Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles and Chris Ash, who served as UT's defensive coordinator last season, have been waiting to see how Sarkisian wants to fill out his staff, although we've heard Ash may have been let go by Sarkisian, freeing Ash up to join Urban Meyer's staff as a position coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

We've heard Sarkisian talked to Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning about joining the Texas staff on Friday, but a source close to the situation said Lanning plans to stay at Georgia, where the Bulldogs are expected to be loaded on defense next season.

Sources told Horns247 Saturday it's unclear if Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding is still under consideration by Sarkisian to join the Texas staff. We've reported Alabama coach Nick Saban, who helped recommend Sarkisian for the Texas job, has objected to Sarkisian attempting to hire Golding.

    Stay tuned.

Is Carrington a great recruiter? Fuck yes. Do we also now have multiple actual coaches that are great recruiters? Also fuck yes. Loss hurts but not as bad when he isn't needed to cover dipshit coaches holes as much.

I'm going to throw this out there again that SC just poached Cal's Director of Recruiting Strategy.  His name is Marshall Cherrington... If they take Bryan Carrington for a similar role, everyone will be confused by the 2 names and it'll be a mess.

That's the old formula. The new formula is:

Take half your age, multiply times two, subtract your age, plus 18 . It gets the correct answer every time.

When I was younger I wouldve agreed but I'm old enough now that thats disgusting.  The obvious solution is to just not ask how old and roll with it

Wtf?  This guy has a spreadsheet to see if he's morally able to bang a chick?  I can't tell if that's next level hustling, or borderline predator.

half your age plus 7 is basic stuff.  Don't think you need a spreadsheet for it

Bad attempt at a joke on my part, I guess.  There's an occasional theme that UT admin and AD - in their occasional perceived apathy or inaction - are trying to turn the UT AD "into Cal" with academic standards and other agendas.  If Cal was able to get Marshawn Lynch and DeSean Jackson on the field, their "academic standards" are allowed to slide...

They werent terrible students but those days are over at Cal.  They're closer to ND and Stanfurd these days in who they admit.  Think they're allowed 1 sub 3.0 gpa admit per class or something these days.

And frankly, considering Cal's budget challenges and struggles to hold onto top notch faculty, I suspect Texas's academic rep is closer to Cal's than most realize these days

No- I’m talking about coaching acumen. Cristobal is trash and gosh calling defense is trash. As in great recruiting incompetent coaching.

This is the correct response.  Cristobal is a horrible horrible game day coach.  Tosh can't call plays to save his life.

If he makes 400k, he would be among the highest paid TE coaches. This list is from 2019, so I’m sure salaries have gone up, but probably not that much.

He has been an OC in the past and had a rep since he coached at SC and UW... both fan bases were delighted when he left.  Started at Cal as QB coach if I remember right... dicey.  Shifted to TEs... meh.  You’d hope he’d have decent NW or Poly connections for recruiting... meh.  Hard.  Pass.

Cal’s total assistant pool is under $4m I think and $400k for TE coach grates.

Someone on 247 post mentioned Marques Tuiasosopo (Cal TE coach) if Banks doesn't come. Roach said they have someone checking on it.Tuiasosopo coached with Sark at Washington and then followed him to USC with the Associate Head Coach title.

    https://247sports.com/coach/Marques-Tuiasosopo-1762/

Hahahahahaha oh my fucking god no.  Cal fans would do backflips to get him out of town.  So so recruiter, so so coach, so so many mehs.  On the plus side, he’d be cheap, I think he makes $400k or so at Cal.

jesus, whoever suggested that should punch themselves in the face

  9. DeRuyter would be a vast improvement over Sirmon from a pure DC perspective... but Texas can do better than either.

DeRuyter is an excellent playcaller and runs a solid 3-4 D.  He, along with Becton and Wilcox, turned the pile of steaming dogshit left by Sonny Dykes into a functional defense in 1 year and a pretty salty, if marginally talented defense in 2 years.  Problem with TDR is that he doesn’t recruit for shit.  He doesn’t like it, he’s not very good at it... it’s one of the reasons why Wilcox wanted to ease him out.

Sirmon is an outstanding LB coach... look at what he did with Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunasyk before that.  The TDR system means your ILBs get tackles and those 2 LBs piled up 160-180 a year.  But he has a shit rep as a play caller.  Failed at Louisville and at Mississippi State.  As I said previously, he and Wilcox are as tight as they come.  They played together at Oregon, they coached together numerous times, their families are basically one extended unit...

Sirmon is a good recruiter but not a world beater.  He recruits the Northwest for Cal and has pulled some really solid guys.  But does Texas need to dip into Washington?  Nope... there are only a couple guys a year they might want so can’t imagine it would be worth it.  Sirmon transitioned to play calling this season but Cal only got 4 games due to COVID... small sample size and not terrible but nothing special...

Texas needs to move on from any thoughts on Sirmon.  TDR would be a solid choice in the short term IMO but expect zero recruiting from him...

Furk.  We are looking for a winning culture.

    Harsh but fair

in all seriousness, Cal's football culture under Wilcox is all about the OKGs "Our Kind of Guys".  Smart, team oriented, love football and love smashing people in the face.  No quitting.  So maybe fewer high star guys but once they play hard and for each other.  Becton drives a lot of that off the field and off season.
