You seem like someone who struggles with the definition of "replace".  Meditate on that, and write better.

If you struggled to understand the intent of my post, then I have a fairly good idea of how successful you're in life. Stop wasting my time. I don't want to engage with you.

Wait, we need a 1/2 all-conference guy to replace Abmas, a non-P5 guy?

    That don't make no sense.

You seem like someone who needs everything to be spelled out for you to understand. We need better players to replace Disu and Abmas' production, if we hope to be equal or better than this year. Meditate on what I wrote for a few days and then maybe it will make sense.

No one is telling you to fall in line. Just don't make comments about kids you

know nothing about. If they don't play up to your expectations next year, then bitch away.

First of all, I never said I didn't like the "kids" that committed to us. I acknowledged in one of my posts that they were upgrades over what we lost in Mitchell and Hunter. What I also said was that we still needed to replace our top players in Disu and Abmas and that first or second team all P5 conference guys are what we needed for those replacements. Abmas was lighting it up in a non-p5 conference but that didn't translate well to big 12. You can be pleased with the new guys and still want better players to round out the roster. Only RT fanatics would take such comments as attacks on him or the "kids" who probably make more on NIL than most adults on this board except the nurses.

Bizarro season. 1-5 on conference Fridays. 5-1 in conference series’. Nightmare non-conference performance. They certainly know how to turn it on when things are on the line, but it’s hardly enough to dig out of holes they create for themselves

It's almost like they don't even try to win on Tuesdays and Fridays.

I'll go with the coach's judgement over yours. How did that kid from Northern Colorado work out

    last year?

Sorry I should have fallen in line with "trust the corches" during the offseason and save my criticisms for the in-season when we fail to live up to our expectations. Then we will say, if only we are able replace a few underperformers, we would be elite. Wait till next year! That is the Aggy, I mean the surly way now.

    Last spring game on LHN.

Yeah, but for those of us out of the country, that isn't an option. Neither is a fubo, Hulu, for free trials, because those are blocked in certain countries...blah blah..

This is why I can't wait for the era of LHN to be over. I live in California and travel abroad a lot, so I don't get LHN. The idea of having our own channel was not bad, but the lack of coverage out of state when we are a global brand sucked.

So we should wait for every top 10 guy in the portal like last year? And when all but 1 say no have no role players to recruit. Let’s do that again! Stop commenting so much pal

You're a fucking idiot trying to make a strawman argument. I guess not every graduate of this fine university is meant to change the world.

You implied players like Mark and Larry are "low-hanging fruit" because they aren't 1st or 2nd team P5 players. They are very good players and generally the type of players you have to add from the portal.

Whatever dude. You win Surly. I don't have time for arguing with people who can't see the big picture, which is to construct a championship caliber roster. Texas should always be able to add transfers from non-P5 schools, hence my "low hanging fruit" comment.

I want you to list all the 1st and 2nd team players from P5 programs you think are available in the portal. There's like 2 or 3 of these available on a good year.

Last year there was only 1 (that I can count) and that team lost in the 2nd round. Teams build around good P5 players and all-conference players from G5 programs because that's generally what is available.

Let me guess, you blame RT for not landing a 1st or 2nd team All-conference P5 player last year when there was only 1 available?

I am not saying they are available. I said those types of guys would help us make a deep run because we don't have a solid core in place. Our best player might be a true freshman. Most other teams (who made deep runs last year) that are retaining their core group will have an edge over us.

UCONN just won a national title with these players having a significant role. Tristen Newton (transfer from East Carolina), Hassan Diarra (couldn't even get minutes at aggy), Cam Spencer (transfer from Rutgers/Loyola Maryland and had never made the NCAA tournament as a player).

I don't think you watch college basketball.

Are you comparing Uconn's coach to ours? They play the most unselfish basketball in Division 1 where role players can effectively play their assigned roles for the team to be successful. We are a hero ball team. I don't think you watch Texas basketball.

I’m hoping these are our Onyema and Horton level players and the ones yet to come are better.

So far we have picked the low hanging fruits imo. Getting the all 1st and 2nd team guys from power conferences is harder, but that's what we need to make deep runs in March.

It is easy for me to look at the new players every year with rose colored glasses. I see measurables and counting stats and ignore big flaws in roster construction, efficiency, defense and cultural fit.  Now that we have been in the portal / NIL era for a few years, I'm starting to get a better idea of who will be successful at this level and who won't.  In short, I want to see us get players with All-Conference credentials, who come from winning programs.  If they are All-Conference, it means that their ENTIRE game is balanced and supports winning.

Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr, Sir'Jabari Rice all were 1st Team All-Conference prior to coming to Texas.  Abmas was borderline All-American. Weaver was conference RoY.  All performed very well.  Tyrese Hunter was Big 12 RoY and was a starter on our Elite 8 team (and could have been better last year with better roster construction). Tre Mitchell is the only previous All-Conference player who really underperformed and that was because he was a poor cultural fit.

In contrast, Horton was in his 6th year and never sniffed an honorable mention all-conference nod. Kadin Shedrick is 6'11 and never got an all-defense selection or really any recognition of any kind (but he at least came from a winning program). Onyema also never earned any recognition at all.  So why should it be surprising when all of these players are largely ineffective in the Big 12?

So this year, while we haven't landed any bigtime players yet, the ones we are getting are checking some of the boxes.

    • Julian Larry - 3rd Team MVC, 2x All-Defense, starter on Indiana State (#38 KenPom, 32-7 conference champion)
    • Jayson Kent - 2nd Team MVC, All-Defense, starter on Indiana State (#38 KenPom, 32-7 conference champion)
    • Tremon Mark - No accolades, but started 28 games over 3 years for a Houston team with a Final 4, Elite 8 and Sweet 16

For our next 2-3 transfers, I really want to see us bring in more players of this mold.  Jordan Pope was All-Freshman in the Pac 10. But his team was so terrible that he didn't make an all-conference team despite good numbers. For me this is a red flag.

You want us to get more of 2nd and 3rd team MVC players and guys with no accolades and expect us to be very competitive in a P5 conference? Pass me the kool-aid. On second thought, please don't.

Abmas couldnt be counted on when the going got tough. He was too prone to scoring droughts against top level competition. We need a top level guy.
