No shit. When it was Derek Allen’s sometimes I just drove on down the road because that lot has shit access to go with the shit parking.

Derek Allen had to be open for breakfast plus lunch and dinner because of the traffic patterns of that hospital area. No wonder he got burnt out and quit.

I didn't know they closed up shop.  At once point he was going to expand and open a burger joint across the street. Is he still doing that or is he completely out?

I hope it works out for them.  All too often it doesn't.

Tom Micklethwait renovated a building and opened a second location in Smithville in February 2019.  Spent a bunch of money and made a really nice place.  In February 2020 it closed.

Was that Smithville not handling it or completely pandemic related you think?  Mickelwaithe is one of my go to spots when I'm in Austin.  Not every town is going to support craft bbq.

I turn 50 a few weeks before. Wife is sort of nudging me to do this with a few people for my birthday. I'm on the fence quite honestly.

If you've never been to one of these or Troubadour, etc.  You basically get a bite or two at each place you visit.  So it might be a taco or a quarter of a sandwich, etc.  So it's really one of those things where you get to enjoy a wide variety.  You also start to get picky because everyone has sausage and then you find that one joint who's serving a taste of banana pudding.  I see folks carrying those trays, etc.  I don't get it.

Just wander from station to station eating your food on the way to the next and enjoying it while it's warm and fresh.

Was the brisket $40 a pound, or higher?

    They do make great viddles.

I swear they are going to raise prices until the lines stop, then pull them back just a little.

IIRC, 16 lb bag for $2.50 or 20 lb loose for the same.
It’s minimal given gas prices these days.

There's also one at Plano Road and Buckingham. SW corner in a gas station parking lot.  It works consistently (better than Arapaho and Shilo)

turkey is SO easy to smoke. can't recommend it enough in case anyone is curious. super easy

I can never find a boneless turkey breast.  I know that's what most bbq joints use, anyone know where to find them?

  7. I've only been to Hard 8 like twice (Colony location) and both times the free beans saved the meal. It's a tourist trap type place and if you have predominantly had Rudys and Dickeys as your bbq for your life I can see how you may be impressed.  But if you've been to an elite joints Hard 8 isn't even competing as far as the food is concerned.

  8. I could sit at Blacks and eat their sausage on a cracker with sauce and be very happy.  I didn't care for Kreuz when I went, not sure what it was.  Just the ambiance or something.  They only had one pit going and things were slow and I kind felt sad in there for some reason.  I have never been to Smitty's but definitely need to in the future.
