  1. And this reaction. LOL

And you get to stare at yet another unnaturally gorgeous PRS...

Which reminds me, I'm right outside Pasadena ATM, which means Wild West Guitars and their bonkers collection of PRSs, Strats, LPs, and Gretches. Gonna have to stop in and look at guitars I have no business looking at.

  2. NSIAP

I know we're all old as fuck in here (I mean we just had about 3 pages of Rickenbacker posts), but here's a young Dallas guitarist doing guitarist from Dallas type things (changing the game the way Dallas guitarists seem to often do).

What's in the water up there?

  3. NSIAP: John Mayer playing an Epiphone LP Studio into some little dinky Roland combo. Dude's rocking about $50 worth of gear in public and sounding like John Mayer. His bearing reminds me of SRV - Could have just jumped out and took the spotlight, but homeboy is just sitting back letting the kids do their things. I don't know why I let people convince me he was an asshole. Yeah, the headstock on his signature guitar is an asshole, but he doesn't seem like one.

Got my kid an oculus 2 for his 9th birthday. This thing is cool as hell. All I have him so far is Tetris. I guess there’s some sort of drawing game that he got for free. Wanted to start out with a basic game so he can get the hang of it. Wife said no violent games... anyone have cool non fighting non violent games they play on there?

Where's the bar on violence set? Moss is a very cute and well-designed platformer, but you jump on enemies to kill them a la Super Mario. If the bar is lower than that, and regardless of where the bar is, Beat Saber is a crowd favorite. You can't go wrong with that one.

For what it’s worth, my brother loves his Silver Sky, I’ve played it and it’s a great guitar.  I personally can’t get over the headstock, but it’s a better guitar than my Fender Am Pro II Strat.  The pickups are great and the real differentiator.  I think the list price reflects you are basically getting a standard-grade Strat with high end custom pickups and paying a bit to JM for his name.  Make sure you like the 7.5” radius.  That didn’t bother me, but it might be a turn off for some players.

Enjoy your free guitar, whatever it winds up being!

I have yet to come across a single person that's played a Silver Sky who doesn't like it, if not love it. Which is unfortunate for my efforts to maintain a certain worldview I've grown comfortable with.

About time they finished that place. Last couple times I was there was under total renovation. Looks great.

There must've been a run on amps because there was only about a 10th the amount as before. That 1958 Twin isn't there, so at least someone's pandemic was niiiiice. Stock was generally hit or miss, except for acoutics. Even with the knowledge that we're all about to die you can still find yourself a ton of acoustic options on the shelf.

  7. The Custom Shop relics have gotten pretty damn convincing.

The EVH mural outside the Sunset Guitar Center looks stellar, but inside the guitar room in the back is still worth the price of admission. I don't know who homeboy on the left was, but he was super tatted and super nice and playing a non-reissue '54 gold top plugged into some old-ass Hiwatt (a brand I really don't know shit about) and the two sales dudes were fawning over him.

That's crazy.  That isn't running off of a laptop, is it?  Assuming no, what is the laptop for?

Yeah. Alienware m15 R4 with an RTX 3080 doing the heavy lifting. It can push that 49" monitor (effectively a 6k panel) at a comfortable 140Hz. It's crazy what laptops can do these days.

  9. Well I bought F1 2021 and the Logitech G923. If I get into as much as I think I will then I’ll start looking into a chair thing.
If not a chair, check out a wheel base of some sort (Wheel Stand Pro kind of thing) since a sturdy mount is the best upgrade next to a wheel. But for seats, if you don't want to go the aluminum profile route, check out Next Level Racing's rigs. I started with a GTTrack and that thing was rock solid. But they have quite a few good solutions up and down the lineup.

In other news, I decided to upgrade the button cluster to a Podium Button Module. Should have just done this in the first place, those other buttons didn't really solve any problems. Now I can map far more than I can remember which is a perfect amount.

  10. CSL DD is the first big disruptor to hit this market.

I was wave 1 for the pre-order, and while we're waiting for fulfillment I came across a killer deal on the DD2 (which was very lucky since there are NO deals to be had with sim racing gear atm) so I cancelled. Had I not I'd be eagerly anticipating it with the 180W power supply. I don't know how Thrustmaster intend to respond (properly), but they need to quickly. Once the CSL DD becomes stocked, that segment will be on lock.

Well the mom and pop shop I wanted to give my business to lost today. They took my money for the Gibson es335 sixties cherry figured and they told me they’d have to order it. He said about a month. Well I call for a update or to at least get email updates and he called me back to tell me no one even ordered it. He said it was a total screw up on his part but I’m headed to Chicago and may hit the Chicago music exchange. Anyone ever been there? I want a freaking es335 like I ordered but with that kinda coin I can get something bad ass. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :/

Very cool place to visit (and the Drum Exchange next door). Parking sucks ass, because Chicago. You're also not far from Wrigley, so if you can time it right...

Hopefully the demo room where they had the cleanest '68 Super Reverb I've ever seen in person is open and the amp is still there. Pick a wicked guitar off the wall and check that thing out. Really, all the demo rooms had cool stuff to crank so I doubt you'll be left wanting. The wall of LPs is something else, too. Post some pics if it works out! It's a bucket-list-type place, imo.

  12. So I've been getting into racing sims and upgraded my trusty Logitech G29 to a direct drive setup by Fanatec. Brother, let me tell you, it's a whole different immersive experience. Covid sent racing sim interest into the stratosphere, and there are a bunch of products that elevate the experience - you can achieve quite a lot of fidelity nowadays.

Here's what I ended up with so far:

    Fanatec DD2 wheel base

Fanatec R300 wheel and a 2021 Limited Edition F1 wheel

    Fanatec Clubsport Pedals V3 Inverted

Fanatec Clubsport Shifter SQ and Handbrake

Sim Lab P1-X racing cockpit (Sparco Evo II US seat)

Samsung Odyssey G9 49" curved display that switches duty with an Oculus Quest 2

    Alienware M15 w/ RTX 3080

I'm looking into adding a seat mover (like Next Level Racing's Motion Platform V3), but there are options here, like those from DOFReality. Other than that, I might collect a few more wheels, but the setup is pretty done for a while.

The way all the road information gets transmitted to the wheel is something else. You get some great force feedback with the Logitech, but it caps at around 2.5 Nm of force. That's not a lot of headroom to convey it all. The DD2, on the other hand, has 25 Nm of force at the ready, coupled with a free-floating, non-geared drive shaft that feels like butter to spin, which is enough to break your wrists (not broken bones, but broken grip - I GUESS it could break your bones too if you crank up the juice and don't pay attention, who knows...)  and deliver an immersive experience like no other.

After I skill up a bit, I'll try my hand at racing with the crazies in iRacing. Steam's current sale has the year membership at $30, so that's almost a no-brainer.

If anyone else wants to hop on and race in Project Cars 1, 2, 3, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Assetto Corsa, or rFactor 2, holler. I'll try any game, just pick your poison.

  13. Karen Carpenter is like the female Merle Haggard imo. Not much range to speak of, but a complete and total master of the range she does have. She had a tonal quality that was able to effortlessly lament in that sincere way that never gets tiring. She has Billie Holiday's believability without the fatigue you feel after 3 songs. She's in the top 5.

  14. Team Overcompensatingly Large Pedalboard

I think y'all saw it upstream, but here it is again:
    IMG-3314.jpg

I think this photo is a couple years old.  Y'all have seen it before.  There have been some additions and subtractions since then.  80% of these pedals are permanent.
The board itself is from custompedalboards.co.uk   They make boards that are exactly sized to use with some of the common pedal switchers like gigrig and Boss.
I cut and soldered all my own cables.
    In order of signal path:
    COMPRESSION/BOOST
That Cali76 is an 1176-style compressor.  I'm working on a funk project, and using a Strat with bridge pickup into that gets you to Nile Rogers territory.
Outside of trying to be Nile, the Sex Drive has all the compression I would otherwise want.  So the Cali76 sometimes gets pulled in favor of an Empress parametric EQ (if the EQ on the amp isn't getting me there) or a little EP boost.
    OVERDRIVE
Love the King of Tone.  It's perfect for what I want to do... Very natural low and medium gains that can be combined with the amp's overdrive to add just a bit more hair.
Thorpy FX Fallout Cloud - My favorite fuzz.  It replaced an analogman sun face (for half as much money), and I think it gives you that sound in a slightly more controlled way (less hiss, squealing, chaos).  As much as I love it, it doesn't get stepped on all that often, and I might get a little more use out of another dual overdrive like Duellist or Protein.
    MODULATION
That white pedal on the top right is a Walrus Audio octave pedal -- like a POG with a much smaller footprint -- and I think it tracks better and sounds better than a POG.
Thorpy FX Deep Oggin - has already been sold.  It's cool, but too expensive and rarely got used.  It got replaced by a Boss Dimension C.  Because the 80's.
Empress phaser - Again, I've been working on a funk record, and this one has some settings with envelope filters so it can quack like a meatball.  This is the only pedal where I think, "Too many modes, too many knobs, takes too long to dial something in."
Mobius - Damn, I'm impressed with this thing.  I'll admit that it can't mimic *every* phaser/flanger/chorus pedal ever made, but I think it gets reeeeeeaaal close to almost all of them... without spending hours deep in the menus.  It will never come off the board.
    DELAY/REVERB
Strymon Timeline -  Seems like it's become ubiquitous.
Hall of Fame Reverb -  Kind of "meh" on it, but I have a couple amps that don't have reverb, so I need something there at the end of the chain.
Sometimes I take off a modulation pedal and add a second delay, and set that one to a short slap.
I also have an old TC Electronic Novadelay, that I think sounds fantastic and has a very simple interface and layout, but it's A) a big footprint, and  B) it has a weird voltage requirement (requires its own power supply under the board, which is a pain in the ass).   Those two factors make it inconvenient.  I should probably sell it.
    POWER SUPPLY
Hidden under that middle row of pedals is a Walrus Audio Phoenix.  I wish it had a couple more outputs that provide high amps for all the modern digital stuff, because that is often a limiting factor on what can live on the board at the same time.  But I ain't starting over again.
    -----
My skill as a guitarist falls well short of being worthy of this board.  I think I'm a decent songwriter and singer, but I am definitely not any sort of guitar wizard.  For me, it's a writing tool, and a source of inspiration... certain pedal combinations and sounds lead to riffs and melodies that I would otherwise never come upon.

We have a bit of overlap:

I rock a pre-cease-and-desist Muffroom Cloud, though. No big deal.

You probably need to try out a Riverside. Just a hunch.

I feel very fortunate to have seen Rodriguez live. It was a phenomenal experience.

I've been checking out his upcoming tour page and it's been a while since there's been any activity. I hope I didn't miss the window, but looking at some vids of his most recent performances, that window is closing pretty damn fast regardless. I picked up both his LPs recently so did what little I could to give back.
