  1. Villainous is such a great game, and perfect to gateway people into board games - it's a theme that everyone "gets" and has a base interest in from the start. That wooden box under the Villainous collection is from a guy on Etsy that holds the entire series and I haul it to family get-togethers. He also made the Marvel Champions box up there that performs the same function. I'm a sucker for collections being in one box because I hate choosing.

And speaking of recent interest in D&D, have y'all noticed the pricing for the books, even recently printed books? Tasha's alt cover, which is only a few months old, fetches $100 on eBay. All the alt covers, even for unpopular titles like Saltmarsh, have shot up. I'm never going to get Volo's alt at this rate. That thing hit $1000 now. When I mentioned it earlier in this thread it was around $350. That looks like the golden age at this point. Ravenloft's alt, which isn't even 2 weeks old, has sold out and is already about to eclipse Tasha pricing. Ridiculous.

  2. According to this thread, May is my anniversary month. So, one more again, here's the shelfie one year after the last.

This has to be the end. There's no more room for another 5x5!

This time last year the collection was in a 4x4 and bursting at the seams. Covid overcorrection.

I realize the Lawsons are at another level when it comes to budget compared to mid-level offerings.  They are gorgeous, though.

One thing I'm interested in, now that I no longer own a studio, is the Slate VMS (Virtual Microphone System).  I think it's a reasonable approach to a decent "mic locker" for bedroom recording guys like me.  Basically, it's a very good, sonically neutral large diaphragm condenser microphone and preamp that interfaces with various microphone, preamp, and compressor patches inside a DAW.  I've listened to the demos, some by 3rd party reviewers, and to me, they did get very close to the Neumann U47 and the Sony 800G, through a (virtual) Neve 1073 preamp.  For $1K, the ability to "own" tens of thousands of dollars of equipment is not to be overlooked.  Yes, it's akin to amp modeling, which has also gotten very good as of late.  (To be fair, I haven't seen a good description of how Slate developed the sonics of their patches -- they claim it's NOT convolution or impulse response technology, which, to be honest, is the way I would have gone.)

That's the route I went. Seemed to just make sense when I was putting together the home studio to go the mic modeling route and Sweetwater had the silver ML-1 for $699, making the decision between the Slate or a Townsend easier. Picked up all the available mic packs for it, too. The 800G is my go-to, but jumping around applying different mics after-the-fact is its own fun little diversion, and sometimes even illuminating.

Were I to do it over again, I'd go the amp modeling route sooner, too.

  4. That PCB should outlive our civilization, the pots and pickups less so. I like the policy for the pickups, especially, (solderless repairs are the bee's knees) but if for some reason a person likes direct wired over plugs, the pads on that PCB are extra fat, so even then it's convenient to retro.

  5. Anyone check out the Austin Record Convention this weekend? Not as many tables but they make up for it by having more lines to wait in to file through boxes.

My haul was limited, but I've been wanting the Texas Flood One Step since I started collecting vinyl, so like a whole year. And yes, the first one I'm listening to is the Pantera.

  6. That's the one. Word is she's done His Holiness, Billy Gibbons' guitars. Regardless, she's great to deal with, but her turn-arounds can be a bit much to deal with. She stays pretty booked. Her stories are righteous, too.

  7. Honey Burst? I thought you didn't like relics? 😮

Mark Erlewine is great, but usually busy.  South Austin Guitars, Austin Vintage Guitars, and (maybe) Guitar Resurrection could do it.  There's some lady who is also supposed to be fantastic, but her name slips my mind.  It will come to me.

    Lauren Ellis at Strait?

  8. I stayed in Austin at a hotel just off campus, The Otis, and all the rooms have record players in them. You can check out titles from the library in the lobby to play in your room and, if you want, buy them. I came across the limited edition double LP version of Rio, which I've been looking for for a long time. It's very rare and each time it comes up on eBay or for sale otherwise it's $100 or more - it's a killer record but come on.

Flipped it over and it's marked at $25. Well, don't mind if I do.

Fantastic collection... I really need to find a good way to put my stuff on display. Getting into graded stuff 5 years ago or so would have been super profitable as I look back. Unfortunately the majority of my collection holds more sentimental than monetary value.

These are from an Amazon seller (search "graded sports card display") and they're great quality. I'd like a few more to house the pro Longhorns collection (which would need about two of these displays).

And I'm the same way, too sentimental for my own good. Most of these cards take be back to the precise moment in time when I got them and I can still feel that little twinge of excitement when 10-year-old Boom managed to snag them. I mowed lawns all summer for that 1985 Mark McGwire Topps Olympic Team rookie, which I got at a flea market on Harwin in Houston - (Funny-to-me story, when I was little I was the biggest Charlie Hustle fan there was, and though I never got his rookie, I was able to get his 2nd year card which was the prize of my collection for the longest. Then the betting thing happened and I had a "say it ain't so, Joe" moment and turned my back. So, I needed to find a new hero. While thumbing through my cousin's 1987 Topps collection, which is one of the ugliest designs in the modern era mind, I came across a visually stunning card that stood out like a sore thumb. It was of this massive dude wearing green, set against the green A's logo, which popped on that otherwise drab wooden design. I flipped the card over and the factoid was about this guy belting 49 homers as a rookie, an MLB record. Forty-nine homers as a rookie! Well that cinched it, I found my replacement for Pete Rose. This was just in time to catch the Bash Brothers era which began in earnest the next year so things were rosy after all. The moral of this story is I am shit at picking heroes.)
