I’m really both a collector and a player. As a player, the answer is D28. As a collector, it’s still D28 but the LP is a lot closer than the firebird which is wayyy closer than an 04 master built srv. There’s a world where the strat could move up if like… this is my only guitar and I take a pill where I don’t think the vintage element is super cool and at that point I’m ranking “have a strat” vs have a Les Paul. But it’s D28 every time. Also the rick can get in on the action.

The in-house luthier said the Custom Shop Masterbuilt SRV with the Ybarra-made overwound modified Texas Specials was one of the nicest, most sonically impressive guitars he's ever played. The Les Paul had a "killer" tone but was a fight to play. The Martin was a fucking 1944 D-28 and every bit the part.

For making music he picked the SRV.

I still pick the Les Paul because I can't get past the fact it's a primordial Les Paul and I would kill to have something from the top of the family tree.

The Martin was so clean it looked like NOS. It's a single owner guitar that spent most of its life in a closet. The only work done is a replacing of the pegs which developed cracking and a rebracing which was done by Martin. It's the only one on the wall that I played (I only held the Les Paul) and it sounded like angels singing.

  3. This wall has something for everyone, but if you could only pick one, putting aside raw value, which one would you get? ('56 Les Paul, '64 Firebird, '04 Masterbuilt Number One, '44 D-28)

Side note, as part of the provenance papers with the Firebird, it belonged to Nikki Sixx (bassist, I know, but it's the guitar most similar to the bass he's most identified with).

  4. Dropped by the In Utero house in the Hollywood Hills. Appaerently a developer purchased it with plan to renovate. Interesting location with a killer view but no parking closer than a 200-step hike up the side of the hill.

  5. Agree to disagree (otherwise bona fide hits from the 50s would no longer be hits because no one knows them anymore). This thread creates nothing but exceptions, because this is a list of favorite one-hit wonders, but there is a loooong list of songs that charted to the number 1 spot that have been lost to time in the popular sense.

  6. Technically, Jimi Hendrix was a no-hit wonder.

EDIT: All Along the Watchtower hit 20, though. I guess that counts as a hit (even though I think of hits as top 10 or even top 3 type things) so I guess I'm technically talking out of my ass.

  7. Of the masturbation subgenre of one-hit wonders, in addition to The Safety Dance that was mentioned, I'll add:

"I wonder if the guy who came up with the phrase 'one-hit wonder' ever came up with anything else." - Demetri Martin

Need recs on a decent value acoustic guitar with onboard electronics for my daughter.  (No pics, assholes.  You'll have to come see her play.)

She writes her own stuff and is pretty damn close to phenomenal -- played her first jazz-pop "gig" at a friend's art show on Saturday and absolutely blew away the audience, which included a few well-known local musicians who were effusive in their praise.  She's already stolen my Yamaha S80 keyboard, which is her main instrument, but as it turns out she's written a few tunes on acoustic guitar and stole my Yammie acoustic-electric as well.  I'm tired of her stealing my shit.

Emphasis is on the sound through a PA.  I could do $600-$750 or so.  Wondering if there are some "value" brands like the old Seagull line, etc.?

Fender's acoustic are the most popular starter/student guitars on the market currently and you get Fishman elecs in the ~$300+ models.

  9. I introduced the kids to an old timey game, Catan. They loved it. I've always thought Catan was plodding and staid, but I thoroughly enjoyed it in this 3D version. Maybe I'm easily entertained by bright colors and plastic mountains. (Honestly, table presence has become such a big draw for me. Like, if I take the time to set up a game and get a bunch of people to put aside the time, the game needs to be an event that justifies the effort. Table presence is a big part of that - it can go quite a ways in helping define the experience for me. A game can be a bona fide classic, but if it looks ugly or "beige" I'll play something else and not think twice about it. )363c2ad4bbfb88d947dc610acd3eba77.jpgac6cb4259f8270b547ef8f11a1a12a32.jpg

  10. These could go here (did I already spam these somewhere?). I recently went and saw a Dallas-based KISS tribute band, Rock N Roll Over, while I was in San Bernadino. Played everything all the way to the criminally underrated Psycho Circus album.

(Don't tell anyone, but they rocked better than the OG lineup when I saw them during the first reunion tour - though I would go see the OG lineup again in a heartbeat.)

Drummer plays in a Pantera tribute band, too, so Beth was apparently out of the question.f523cb2f78d20b4f8e1588dd928eb03a.jpgb8f16bb1dedb1095d03365dbb094c7bc.jpg
