Tom "the turtle" Herman [Lame Duck or greatest 5d chess player ever?]
Also, 4 offensive touchdowns. And our up-tempo offense was really good. So naturally we abandoned it.

Did you watch the game? How about one sack and no QB hurries? That's a pretty stark improvement from last year. 142 yards rushing, 263 yards passing. We haven't had that amount of offensive production against a Big 5 team since D'Onta was here, and that was one year. Prior to that it was 2014. Not that we don't have issues on offense - we do. But it's also an obvious improvement. Special Teams overall is better, although Dickson is irreplaceable.

Conditioning is the big one. He's also done well at filling holes in the roster. Getting *some* talented position coaches on staff. Like I said elsewhere we're better than last year. It's not a stark difference but the improvements are there.

Apparently Herb Hand too.

I think Herman can still put it together. And you're right about him being young. Herman does a lot of things right. But there's something he's doing wrong that isn't obvious yet outside of results. Maybe he learns before we do. First things first, offensive scheming, play calls, and personnel rotation is a mess. He doesn't explain why he does what he does so we're left to speculate. And we're all angry so we speculate he's a dipshit surrounded by dipshits. Maybe that's true. Mack and Strong were old. They weren't going to change their bad habits. Maybe Herman can figure it out.

You guys wanting Herman gone are going to learn how I felt in early September, 2016. "The coach sucks, and there's nothing anyone can do about it." Thankfully for me, Charlie Strong went 6-7, 5-7, and 5-7, and lost to Kansas. Worst case scenario now is that Herman keeps going 8-4 and 9-3 year after year and doesn't provide any clear reasons to fire him after 3 years.

I don't want t ruin the pity party, but I managed to stay sober and here are my thoughts on the game: - Player for player, we're not better than Maryland. I'll let that sink in, but it should be pretty clear to everyone that watched. Recruiting ratings be damned. - This was a pretty even game. We lost by giving up big plays in the 1st half and going down 24-7. Then Sam's final terrible interception. - Our offense is better than last year. O line isn't elite, but it's serviceable. RBs are better. Sam's reads are better. Still pretty mediocre all around. - Our defense is pretty light through the front 7. We're going to miss Poona this year. Need someone to step up on DL. - ST is better, even though we can't replace a guy like Dickson. - Our conditioning was winning the game for us again - like last year - before the 90 minute weather break allowed Maryland to come back refreshed in the 4Q. - Coaches still making highly questionable decisions. Porter. PORTER. Going away from tempo when it worked so well. Etc. - I still think we win most of our games this year. All-around we're a better team. It's not a night-and-day difference, just noticeable improvement.

2018 RB by Committee thread
I agree. Maybe a TE or a RB here and there. And Herman is frustrating because he never explains anything, but I would love to know why Porter was in on the final series and on the 2yd touchdown run. I get he's a journeyman back and he knows the system and he's got something the coaches like. But come on.

Agree, but Tom's still got this year and next to be or not be an epic failure.

Nah he regained possession before he hit the ground, then it popped loose

One thing is clear. We don't have the defense we did last year. Our offense is better. But our defense isn't going to dominate and win games for us.

Well...Big 8 minus Nebraska and Colorado and SWC minus Arkansas, Houston, Rice, SMU, and aggie. Carry on.

We're not slow. We have several explosive backs but don't design plays to really maximize that. We rely on our O line to make holes (questionable) or the backs to break a tackle to make big plays. Occasionally it happens, but our plays are very slow to develop. Sam isn't fast. That slows our option plays. He's also got a long release and doesn't go through his progressions quickly. That slows our pass plays. We work best in up-tempo. So naturally we aren't going up-tempo.

Yeah we're starting to turn the tide because of conditioning. This won't help. *I'm referring to the 22 unanswered points we scored before the last MD TD*

If we can just get PJ Locke in pursuit all the time, he'll be okay. Just need to start him behind the ballcarrier
