The starting lineup is going to be interesting by the end of the year because right now you could say 3 of our best players aren't in the starting lineup.

Matharu, Hunter, and Moore are three of our best players. Not sure Schaefer will be willing to go that young though with the starting lineup.

When healthy our most talented starting lineup is:

    PG-Harmon

    SG-Hunter

SF-Matharu undersized here but she's better than Allen-Taylor and Warren by a mile. As is Hunter. Texas would have to go small at SF though.

    PF-Moore

    C-Gaston

I don't think Schaefer will be willing to make that many changes with so many young players but Warren, Allen-Taylor and Ebo simply aren't as good as these other players.

Lattimore would be another Freshman on the floor but I thought she played a good game today and showed some real potential. Her rim protection off the bench could help as long as she doesn't get bumped from the rotation when Moore gets back.

I didn't pencil this in as a tough game but JSU is making up for their lack of size by speeding past our bigger slower players. Its been an effective gameplan by them

Jackson State, who won the Southwestern Athletic Conference title in 2020-21 and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament, was tabbed No.1 in the SWAC preseason coaches' poll.

JS lost at Ole Miss (7-1) by 13 and lost at Miami (4-2) by 5. (Miami only lost by 2 at #6 Indiana)

Hopefully Harmon can stay on the court for the fourth.

    #14/16 Texas (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) vs Jackson State (1-2, 0-0 SWAC)

Frank Erwin Center (16, 540) – Austin, Texas

    GameDay Quick Facts:

    • TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network. Alex Loeb (pxp) and Andrea Lloyd (analyst) will call the action.

    • RADIO: 105.3 The Bat broadcasts every UT game on the statewide network.

Craig Way (pxp) and Kathy Harston (analyst) will call the action. Check TexasSports.com for a listing of affiliates carrying the game.

    • SERIES: 2nd meeting, Texas leads 1-0

    Notables:

BACK-2-BACK: After returning to the win column on Saturday with an 83-42 home victory over CSUN, Texas is set to wrap up a two-game homestand as they welcome in Jackson State Wednesday. The No.15-ranked Longhorns will look to gather win No.5 on the year as they kick off the month of December and head into the back half of the nonconference schedule.

FAMILIAR FACE: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer will see another familiar face on Wednesday in Jackson State's Ameshya Williams. Williams, the Tigers leading scorer and rebounder (18.0 PPG/8.7 RPG) and reining SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, was recruited and played under Schaefer during his final season at Mississippi State.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: JSU enters Wednesday's matchup coming off a 79-66 loss at Ole Miss in their last outing last Tuesday. The Tigers' 1-2 record to start the season doesn't tell full story of what is a very talented roster. Both of JSU's losses have come against power five opponents. JSU defeated Nichols State 75-59 in their lone home contest of the season. Jackson State, who won the Southwestern Athletic Conference title in 2020-21 and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament, was tabbed No.1 in the SWAC preseason coaches' poll.

This one may not be a laugher. JS lost at Ole Miss (7-1) by 13 and lost at Miami (4-2) by 5. (Miami only lost by 2 at #6 Indiana)

Only criticism of the kids tonight is we're getting killed on the glass. It's all that's keeping this from being a 20- to 25-point cakewalk.

Defense is there. Offense isn't great as others have noted, but their shot selection--and shooting--have been solid.

However, rebounding continues to be a problem. Not sure it's something one man (Disu) can fix.

    This.

  5. I know we beat them by 40 points but really impressed with Csun’s backdoor cuts, beating us down the court on offense and ball movement to find the open man. For an interim coach and largely inexperienced players that was impressive. At times they looked like a seasoned group. Gives Vic additional information about his own team as well.

Really wish we would get the hurt girls back, they need this time to get their confidence up and get integrated into the team. Never sure how long Warren is going to be available either, we need as many moving parts as we can get.

  6. #14/16 Texas (3-1) vs California State University, Northridge - CSUN (2-2) Big West

    Saturday, Nov. 27   1:00 p.m. Central

    TV: LHN

    Nov 7th:

It’s been 20 months since the CSUN women’s basketball team has played. Since then, the Matadors have a new head coach and a plethora of new players.

Only three players on this year’s team have significant Division I experience, but everyone has a hunger to improve.

“One thing that I really like about being on a younger team is there’s so much room to grow,” graduate student Meghann Henderson said. “And you can see the girls get better every single day.”

In addition to six true freshmen, CSUN is helmed by interim head coach Carlene Mitchell, who coached at UC Santa Barbara from 2011-2015. Mitchell became head coach in late July following the resignation of Lindsey Foster due to family reasons.

    CSUN

Coach: Carlene Mitchell, first season (interim)

Records last season: 12-19 overall, 7-9 Big West

Postseason finish: Lost in opening round of Big West Tournament

Top returners: Meghann Henderson, GS, 5-10, guard, 8.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg; Jordyn Jackson, R-Jr., 5-4, guard, 8.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg

Key losses: De’Jionae Calloway, forward, 13.5 ppg, 8.4 rpg; Lauren Shymkewicz, center, 5.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.1 bpg

Newcomers to watch: Kayanna Spriggs, 6-2, forward, Mater Dei Catholic High (Chula Vista); Macy Smith, 5-10, guard, Spring Lake Park High (Minnesota); McKenzie Hudgen, 5-7, guard, Marian High (Indiana); Rochelle Fourie, 6-3, center, Manukura School (New Zealand)

Coach’s quote: “We’re a small team, we’re a young team, so we’ve got to understand how to win games, how to stay in games. And sometimes you can do that by just competing.” — Carlene Mitchell

    #12 Texas at #16 Tennessee

The Lady Vols have won at least a share of the SEC regular season championship 17 times (with the most recent occurrence being in 2015), won 17 SEC tournament championships (with the most recent occurrence being in 2014), made 18 Final Four appearances (with the most recent occurrence being in 2008), and won 8 national championships (with the most recent being in 2008).

Head Coach:  Kellie Harper 2019 - present

Kellie Jolly Harper (born May 3, 1977)[1] is an American basketball coach who is currently the head women's basketball coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols. Prior to coaching at Tennessee, she served as head coach of Missouri State, NC State, and Western Carolina.

In college, she was one of the starting point guards for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers during their three consecutive NCAA women's national championships from 1996 to 1998. In 1997, Harper was named to the Final Four All Tournament team.[3]

    Tennessee under Coach Harper:

2019–20               21–10   Postseason not held due to COVID-19

    2020–21               17–8      NCAA Second Round

As texasstrong12 reported earlier Rae Burrell is hurt.

Tennessee Lady Vols star forward is reported to not have an ACL injury but is out indefinitely according to head coach Kellie Harper.

I didn’t. Celeste is a good player but I would take all 3 of the guards we added over her.

Matharu, Harmon and Hunter are more talented.

I think this will end up being addition by subtraction by the end of the year because these young guards wouldn’t be getting as many minutes if Celeste was still here.

You are right, so far those three guards have shown serious promise especially Harmon, who appears to be a program changer. Lot's more to come from Hunter and Matharu.

I can never tell how recruits are going to work out, they look great on the recruiting boards but i have no clue if it will translate to the college level. I suck at evaluation but I guess that qualifies me to coach the football team for the past decade.... 😄

Celeste plays good defense but is a streaky shooter and not great from 3. Her Duke career this far:

    8-13 (0-2 three) for 17 points and 5 rebounds

    4-12 (1-3 three) for 11 points and 8 boards

2-7 (0-3 from three) for 11 points and 7 boards

7-9 (1-1 from three) for 16 points and 6 rebounds

2 great games with 2 shooting clunkers in between

So Celeste is averaging about 13.75 points per game at a .500 percentage with about 6.5 rebounds per game.

I'll take the rebounds but your right, she's shooting a lesser percentage than our better players and from three she's not good. .222

JAT needs to spend a little time on that 3 percentage as well.

  10. You can certainly see the difference when Rori is on the floor.

Nice to see so much of our bench get a lot of burn, I thought Gaston started to show some signs of being back but Lattimore had some freshman struggles today. I didn't think the score was representative of what was possible with so much of our bench playing, but a valuable game for us in the long run.

On to Tennessee on Sunday at noon. Two games for us on back to back Sundays on ESPN, getting some respect.

Won't see as much of this bench in Knoxville.

Obviously early season and small sample size warnings apply, but we're #2 in Massey after the win over Stanford. Sorry if that was mentioned. Moved up 23 spots in his ratings set.

    https://masseyratings.com/cbw/ncaa-d1/ratings

Lots of parity this season according to his ratings. Pretty unusual for women's basketball to see so many expected losses for the top 10 teams.

Wow, I don't see us anywhere close to #2 but we'll take it. It's going to be an exciting season and we will definitely be in the conversation. Could not have hoped for a better start, I though we were done after losing Celeste.

I need Ebo to start tomorrow simply so I can see what happens. The top pic will have to guard the bottom pic (lulz). Ebo has to have at least 50 pounds on this girl.

Against such a diminutive lineup I'm hoping Gaston/Ebo/Moore/Lattimore get some confidence to help us in tougher games going forward.
