Entry-level workers in tech, banking and consulting are now accepting six-figure offers, irking some more established, early-career workers who were hired at lower salary ranges. The Wall Street Journal reports major banks — including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup — bumped analysts' pay to $100,000 last year, then quickly tacked on another $10,000. Major consultancies now also have a $100,000 floor. The rush to snag six-figure hires comes as firms struggle to staff up during the Great Reshuffle and more established professionals quit or retire early.

I get that to some extent. But I think surly's perception of "middle class" is generally skewed. If a top 5% income is "middle-middle class," that terminology is meaningless.

You are right— when I think of middle class (aka Surly Middle class) it’s not the $58k median income middle class or whatever the data scientists present. I’m thinking more practically, I guess. Middle class is poor and poor is poverty and poverty is obscene poverty, etc.

Yep.  Wife's best friend and her husband probably clear ~$200k per year.  We live in probably the best school district in CO and because husband went to private school, both kids are in private school.  They don't know how they are going to pay for college because they burned most of their savings for private school.  Oldest is a senior.  He wants to go to Kansas St, so clearly private school didn't really help there.

$200k across two people is middle-middle class. Especially in CO.

I think we need to adjust our definitions and thinking around what $100k, $200k, $500k, etc. household income means in 2022.

I’m not in the group that will be affected in my overall life (high prices usually work better in my professional life) but tomorrow will be my third tank this week at ~105-115/per.  About $70/week delta from mid Feb.  That $300 a month can affect those, as stated up thread, that have less leverage to ask for COLA, or just can’t eat it.   Wife doesn’t drive much anymore but her Yukon would not be kind for me right now.

3 definitely changes the game. And, the damn things are so big now because they want you to keep the kids in them until they’re 10 or whatever.  Both of our Yukon’s barely fit the seats right, not like old school square body burbans at all.  And when they’re young and facing backwards, you can forget about any recline.  Family vehicle my ass.

Gotcha, maybe I'm misjudging how much most people drive. I go through a full tank maybe 2x a month (30 days), and a lot of times I'd say 1x. So I probably average 1.5x full tank a month. I filled up last week and it was $90, up from $70.

  5. When it comes to gas, what are we really talking about? An extra $40-50 bucks a month, maybe? First, I don't believe anyone who posts on this messageboard really cares or feels the impact of an extra $50 a month in a surge expense unless you are an OCD psychopath.

I assume there are those who are barely hanging on where $50 a month will crater their whole lives (e.g. below poverty level types) and for those folks, I'm sorry. If you can't change consumption behaviors to move around $50 (e.g. cut out some nights out or eating out or whatever) then you have much bigger problems than gas going for $3 to $5 a gallon and should be getting aid from enablement programs the government offers tomorrow, if you aren't already.

For everyone in the lower middle class and above, everyone is having to pay more equally. Equality is good.

Thread has come full circle. When your parents go to trade in their lightly used cars for a new one, convince them to just give it to junior at 16.

I have actually debated selling/trading in my truck for not quite what I paid for it 4 years ago, but then you have to buy something inflated, or just keep not having a car payment and giving this truck to my son when he's 16 in a few years.

I got an email this week that I wasn't chosen in the 2022 lottery for the F-150 Lightning (they had tons of deposits) and that I can likely buy a 2023 at the earliest.

I enjoy them, but it's like a completely different brand of humor.

Exactly! You can tell a tangible difference between Seasons 2-7 and 8-9. Season 8 is way less subtle, way more bombastic and, while still fun and memorable, completely devoid of the clever and subtle writings that hit deeper in the parts of our brain that manage humor and comedy.

Also George is obviously fatter/older/balder at the start of 8 than previous seasons which is jarring.

MBS is a usurper and not the legitimate ruler of Saudi Arabia. Fuck him.

I read today (long form profile on MBS in the Atlantic) that of the last 5 crown princes, only one has made it to King. 2 grew old and died waiting and 2 were out politicked, I guess. It seems very “game of thrones” and being next in line isn’t always a sure thing.

    And the math:

I mean how is filling that gap feasible where oil is pumped/traded on the global free-market by private sector companies - not withstanding the type of oil produced in the US (WTI light sweet crude) or the type of product our refineries are tooled to handle (heavy sour) without massive government interference by regulating where and from whom we buy or tell companies what to refine? E&P companies are drilling what they can under the constraints of making a profit and what investors are willing to throw their money at. And alot of that capital has recently been unwilling to invest more in exploration and production because they've gotten burned on their returns since 2014.

Are you proposing we nationalize our oil industry?

    And ESG

  10. So, again, does anyone think that the calculus has changed so much that a restitution of the Keystone Pipeline can be revived or is it still a political non-starter? Energy independence (or at least, North American) and the price of oil and instability, etc.?

  11. The People or Peoples who drafted a QB without confabbing with Rodgers ahead of time screwed up royally.

You wasted a draft pick, you created drama with your dramatic but great QB, and you ultimately had to tie your next 5-6 years with him anyways. Pure miscalculation or mishandling of known personalities and assets. Heads should roll now this saga is seemingly closed.

  12. I've been binging on Netflix from Season 1 and I'm at Season 8. I've noticed a few things in this progression:

    - the vignettes before the episodes in the later episodes aren't as good as the stand up comedy intro

    - the episodes and story lines increasingly break into more of a vacuum once you get into 7 and 8. What I mean is, in earlier seasons there wasnt as much "big" events in episodes that get left behind. Examples include the episode where Susan thinks George and Elaine are cheating because of the conflicting story to see Marisa Tomei. She punches him, never gets a resolution and next episode they are hanging out in the apartment or invitation shopping or whatever. Another example is the Soulmate Jenine Garafalo episode. She just disappears. Same with Elaine coming back into the fold after Bizarro world Jerry & friends, etc.

    - it's stupid that Frank C. got a GTO way back in season 3 or whenever Larry David was the lawyer in a cape but it just deus ex machina's in on Season 8 when George needs to look like a greaser

  14. Tons of organizations pulling business, contracts and product/services out of Russia. Yale Management Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is keeping an updated list of companies that have curtailed their Russian operations (and the ones that have not). More than 200 companies have withdrawn from Russia so far. Notably McDonald's, Coca-Cola and others have not yet:

All RPI grads I've worked with have been top notch. My reference points are the semiconductor and software industries- seems to be a darn good school.

I've worked with two different people (1 male, 1 female) across two organizations and both represented RPI very well. Super smart and succesful people. Anecdotal and small sample size, fwiw.

  17. What about Ol’ Arthur? Am I the only one with significant enough arthritis that some days you think it would be easier to just be dead? I’ve gotten a whole new empathetic view and perspective on how something like the opioid addicts/epidemic could ever happen and how people with chronic pain just “give up”.
