I highly recommend All The Pretty Horses. If you like it then read the next two in the trilogy.

I read and enjoyed All The Pretty Horses some years back and never continued with the trilogy. Maybe I’ll revisit.

    Yeah, those fonts suck shit.

But there are much better serif fonts than TNR, namely the Century family, Garamond family, and others.  El fenix is correct that TNR is a bastard newspaper font adapted for "display" in narrow newspaper columns.

I still double space after periods, but wp corrects it.  Not after colons, however.

Nope. TNR is the standard in my narrow view. Also double space refers to the lines, not two spaces after a period.

The strangest part of that State Department memo is the 14 pt requirement.  Is that a real thing?  Are they being written by children trying to hit a page count on their submission?

I would laugh my ass off at anyone that sent a serious document to me with 14 pt font.

Same. Automatic disqualification of whatever it is they are submitting for.

times new roman sucks.  it's an adaptation of an old newspaper font for shitty 1990s screens and printers.  our screens are much higher resolution and damn near no one prints anything anymore.

Wrong. TNR, double spaced, and 12 font is the only acceptable way.

Arial, Calibri, etc. are all evil

Zeke has reverted back to his shitty play. I get he is still valuable as a blocker but if that is is best asset or gaining short yardage, he is a very expensive fullback now.

It’s gotten so bad I almost feel sorry for him, I find myself rooting for him to have a big or good run just for his mental health at this point. Father Time will get us all and render us all useless at something we were good at and made a living doing; I take no joy in watching him be enfeebled.

There are 3 genres I am an absolute sucker for:

    Revenge porn

    Dog movies

Elitist cocksuckers getting their comeuppance. Always extra fun when said elitist is played by an actual elitist cocksucker.

Would love to see Gwynneth Paltrow get slowly tortured to death, or Chevy Chase.

You have some serious issues man

Came here to see if there is any commentary around this-- I saw some emails were leaked of Cuban being a baby and throwing a fit instead of taking some accountability.

    Now this:

The mural in Deep Ellum that captured the imagination and sentiment of many Mavericks fans, but also raised the ire of team governor Mark Cuban, is no more.

Local artist Preston Pannek told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday that he has painted over his much publicized Luka Doncic “Please send help” mural, doing so at Doncic’s request. Pannek said that he and his wife, House of Pannek co-artist Adrienne Creasey-Pannek, will collaborate with Doncic on a replacement mural in the next few weeks.

Could've fooled me. You talk exactly like the middle management assholes that stop by my office to chat.

Just making sure you are focused. Doesn't seem like your head has been in the game lately, you know? What's going on, pal? You okay? We've known each other a long time, you can trust me, just want to know how I can help you get back to your old you...

Sure he's talking out his ass but it's pretty entertaining and certainly has me with the best of intentions planning to follow up on some of his stories/history.  Admire him for just putting it all out there and I espeically like it when he pontificates about shit no one can prove.

Final line:  Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don’t know what they want?

I read his Cancer tome, Emperor of All Maladies and dropped it about a 1/3 of the way through and didn't like it. Maybe I'll try this or GIM with these reviews

IMO Return to work seems to be purely the policy of vainglorious control freaks.  Companies have successful shifted the vast majority of facilities cost to their workers while extending worker hours and availability.  C levels just miss the bowing and scraping.

Like with most things in life, the truth probably is in the middle. I'm sure there is inefficiency and unproductivity from WFH, but it's not a panacea and the toothpaste is out of the tube, so striking a balanced chord seems to be the optimal outcome.

  10. For all the grief that McCarthy gets as a coach and how everyone hates him and thinks he sucks, take a look at Pre-McCarthy era Cowboys from 2000-2020 and the McCarthy era from 2020-Present:

20 seasons predating McCarthy (Parcells, Phillips, Garrett); 10 playoff appearances (.500); 3 wins.

    3 seasons: 2 playoff appearances (.667); 1 win.

Not a huge sample size, but the question I have is: what would the numbers and sample need to look like for people to put some respect back on McCarthy's name? Curious what that defined success criteria looks like for the most ardent McCarthy haters.

if you say you don't think mindy kaling has ever done anything funny, then you're saying you don't like the office.  she was one of the main voices in the room, especially during the more formative early seasons, along with greg daniels, mike schur, novak, lieberstein (toby), etc.  if you don't like her character, that sounds like a personal problem - she's barely in it.

after the office, she created the mindy project, which was very good for 2-3 seasons and decently funny for another 1-2 seasons.

both of those shows were old school sitcoms that had 16-24 episodes per season.  that's some heavy lifting you rarely see anymore, and she did a lot on mindy project - she was basically like tina fey was on 30 rock.  that's not easy.

then she created champions, which i only watched 1.5 episodes of, but was hot garbage, and got cancelled.  she also did a season of four weddings and a funeral, which was ok (the wife really liked it).  She wrote a movie, late night, which i thought was good not great.

most recently she created never have i ever (never seen it), the sex lives of college girls (s1 is decent, haven't watched any of s2 yet), and now velma, which looks terrible and not something i would be interested in anyway.  it's a reimagined prequel of a really old children's cartoon.  it's the textbook definition of ignorable.

the bottom line is she fucking works, basically non-stop.  some people think she's too woke, others think she's not woke enough, which means probably neither is really accurate.  i could give a shit either way.  you can like or not like her or her projects.  but if you don't think she's ever done anything funny, then your taste sucks shit.

I already know you think my tastes suck (e.g. Parks and Rec thread), but count me as someone who passes on anything Mindy Kaling. Mainly my bias is from when I was a consultant for a household name, big tech company pre-Covid.

Before Covid these big tech firms would pay for celebrities to come in and do corporate gigs for big events (corporate kick offs, annual customer conferences, etc.)

I’ve seen some really good ones, like Jerry Seinfeld workshopping what would show up his Netflix special at WorkDay Rising, but have also seen some horrible ones— like Mindy Kaling. Maybe she was just cashing a check and mailing it in, but she was seriously unfunny in every interaction.

It was both an interesting and very silly movie. Also super jarring to see Judith Light for me in something that’s not Who’s the Boss.

She, along with one of the Verrick Tech bros, was in HBO's Succession, which made me think there are probably others and the HBO casting person went to the HBO bench first.

Unlike most criticisms of Dallas, the zoo is in Dallas proper, and yeah, it's not a real nice hood down there. It's not awful-awful, though.

As a card-carrying member of the Dallas Zoo, it is awful-awful.

I remember one time years ago my kids goaded me into going to the janky McDonald’s with the zoo theme next door and it was no different than the McDonalds across from The State Fair. Filthy, disgusting and drug-addled. I’ve heard that area is a huge risk for getting your catalytic converters stolen as well.

  14. h/t The New Yorker:

    --

    To Whom It May Concern,

My name is George Santos Rockefeller. I have a wide breadth of experience that I believe makes me an excellent candidate for a position at your company, which is a company that I founded.

Let’s start with my educational experience. I’m an alum, of course, but I’m also one of many alumni. Harvard, Yale, the Sorbonne—these are all names of colleges. I got grades, and I sat down in various seats for numerous tests. And, during my school years, I took many classes—all of which I also taught.

After graduation, I started my own business: Amazon. But I soon gave it all up in pursuit of my life’s true calling: winning a Nobel Prize. I won, of course, but then I donated the prize and money and any mention of my name to an animal shelter that doesn’t have an address or phone number anymore. Do not try to contact them.

For a number of years, I worked in the financial sector at places like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. I did such an amazing job that, if you ask my former bosses about me, they remain so stunned by my endeavors to this day that they’ll only respond, “Who?”

My next career was in the world of self-help. I travelled around giving sermons and healing people with my hands and was followed by twelve committed disciples. But I learned that you can’t always trust your co-workers, and I quit while I was ahead—just before one of them was about to betray me.

Now, onto the stuff that really matters. My most recent work experience was as a congressional representative for the great state of New York. I served eight terms, and then became President of the United States. And, if my time in office taught me one thing, it’s these two things: work hard, be honest, and refuse to ever admit you’re wrong.

As for my personal background, unfortunately my entire family perished in the September 11th terrorist attacks, in 2001. You can call any one of them today and they will attest to this. Also, I am of Jewish descent, in the same way that Canadians are from Australia. Does that make sense?

All of this certainly positions me to be your top candidate, but let’s answer the most pressing question: Why should you hire me? Well, I believe that your company could use the voice and mind of an elder statesman, and that describes me to a T. I am a hundred years old.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, which I definitely wrote. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,

    George Santos Shakespeare ♦

Then why were they following him across the country two weeks earlier?   And from everything I've read,  they got the familial DNA from the dads garbage, not a geneology website.  Not saying the article is bullshit but doesn't add up to me.

I think the article addressed that. They had the DNA sample from the sheath button (his grave mistake we've always said has been leaving that behind) and from there they start building out a family tree model based on the DNA database, triangulated with hyundai elantra owner list that was queried, and they get a short list of suspects.

They followed him to verify the DNA from the dad's garbage:

    Quote

Regardless of who is conducting the investigation, genealogists look for partial matches, hoping to find relatives within the third-cousin range. They then began the process of building an enormous family tree, using a vast array of public records and more-traditional detective work to create a short list of people within that tree who could plausibly be the suspect. The fact that Kohberger lived 10 miles from the crime scene would have helped him stand out. So too would the fact that he owned a white Elantra.

Still, even after pulling the phone records, the team had no way to be certain Kohberger’s DNA would match the knife-sheath DNA. A genetic genealogy lead is just a hypothesis, after all. A final step typically involves conducting surveillance on the suspect and then collecting something they’ve discarded—such as a cigarette butt or soda can—extracting DNA from it and comparing it with the crime scene DNA. On Dec. 27, agents collected trash from outside the Pennsylvania home where Kohberger was visiting his parents, according to the affidavit. The Idaho State Lab reported that there was an extremely high probability it contained DNA belonging to the suspect’s father. On Dec. 30, agents arrested Kohberger.

Yes, becoming common in hipper bars/restaurants where I live, along with Narcan.

I was shocked it was such a common thing. Back in my day, we just did the gross drugs we scored. I talked to a hard charging colleague who lives in Miami and I off-hand said something about how scary it is to me these days and I'm glad I sowed my wild oates when I did, and he said "oh we test everything, everytime. no worries" Blew my mind, it's become a best practice in partying.
