  1. So six months ago I got the threat of a third antidiabetic med. I was already on jardiance and metformin. My a1C was 7.8.

I started trying to lose weight and I did, but then saw a nutritionist. They pointed out a lot of my substitute foods were bad for me (high carb) and some other things.

    I changed:
    Workout:
stationary recumbent bike 30 min 6x week
Weight workout: mjnor body weight/ kettlebell/ dumbbell 3 times a week. Sometimes 4.

Breakfast starts 12 hours after last food of the night before. (No cereal.) Omelette / strawberries / banana

Snacks: peanuts / apple or grapes or any fruit (no longer granola bars)

Pasta: great reduction most days to almost none
Sandwiches maybe once or twice a week (used to be almost every other day)

Dinner: two vegetable portions. Rarely corn. The air fryer has really helped here.

    Chocolate/candy: greatly reduced

After dinner treat: usually fruit popsicles

Drinks: water. Plenty of water. (no longer Splenda tea / diet soda / sweetened sparkling water)

One “cheat” dinner Fridays. That is usually my pasta or pizza night as the family goes out.

Two weeks ago was the 6 month follow up. My a1C is down 1.5 to 6.3. My weight is down 35 pounds.

My cholesterol is where it needs to be.

This was the right kind of wake up call.
I hope I can maintain it.

  2. 2 minutes ago, chemHORN said:

Terry should've never put Disu back in the game.  We were playing fine without him.  That decision might cost us our season.

It started with Brock’s jammed finger. It forced the Disu sub, but Disu didn’t have his legs (illness) so when he tried to shoot it was way short.

no adjustment after that doomed us.

  3. I’ve owned three Chris Reeve knives. Small Sebenza, large Sebenza and one other that I can’t remember the model number. The shape didn’t work on the other one so I don’t own it anymore. The two Sebenzas are drop point and I’ll keep for life. They are really nice.

I don’t carry them daily like I do a lot of the Benchmade’s I have. I prefer a deep carry clip and I don’t want to get a custom clip just to get it to ride lower in the pocket.

I don’t regret buying one (or two) but it does make it easier to justify other more expensive knives.

  4. I’ll jump in this thread. I’m mid 40s and my A1C got me scared. Before getting another medication to manage it, I thought I’d actually make an effort on changing my food and workout.  At my highest I was 230lb.

My first steps were to stop sugar sweat tea and Dr.P as my source or hydration and switched to splenda sweetened tea and Flavored sparkling water. I switched cereal from kids crap to cheerios. I switched candy snacks to granola bars.
I used LoseIt to count calories and restarted using my stationary recumbent bike to burn some calories (30min 4-5x/ week. And I made an appointment with a nutritionist.

There was a two month delay between making the appointment and having the appointment.  During that time I lost 20 lb.  I thought I was doing great.

then the nutritionist took a look at my food bible and made three quick points:

I eat too early in the day. I needed to wait until 12 hours after dinner to eat breakfast.

I cannot have cereal for breakfast like I had since I was 5.  Eggs and Fruit.

I cannot have artificially sweetened drinks. I need water. Lots of water.

so all three of my changes were crap changes. Hopefully these bring better results.

she also directed me to some good recipes and added more vegetables  to my routine.
Outside of dietary changes she suggested I add weight training, especially the larger muscles in my legs.

I now work out 6 days a week with some form of weight training on 3 to 4 of those days.

since then I have lost another 20 lb and should be going back to the doc for an A1C check soon. Fingers crossed.

  5. Arrived today. Its a good feeling watch. I like it. I would buy again. I did like the fact that the bracelet has screws for link adjustment and they included the screwdriver needed. I’m still pissed I have ditched OEM bracelets on my Seiko Monster as the pin came out of the collar at the worst time more than once.

  6. The reasoning, and I'm not saying that I agree with it, is that Seiko has recently been jacking up their prices without really improving their product.
For a long time Seiko has been on par with Citizen in that mid-tier watch range. Recently, Seiko's management decided they wanted to move up a tier and be seen as competition for Tissot/Hamilton (chasing would-be Swiss buyers). They took the chance during the transition from the 7S26 movements (found in the old Seiko 5 SKXs, which you used to be able to get for ~$150 or so) to the 4R36 movement which added hacking/hand-winding. Now Seiko 5's go for $400 MSRP, with the same Hardlex crystal, a decreased water resistance of 100m, very cheap pressed-clasp bracelets, and a movement with +45/-35s accuracy. In other words they're heavily overpriced now.
Long Island saw the chance to fill the void Seiko left behind (Orient has done this too, to an extent) and started to release their own watches. They deliberately use Seiko's designs and movements, but with sapphire crystal and 200m water resistance. They want that segment of buyers who are disgruntled with Seiko's price hikes and want similar-looking alternatives at better price points.
Edit: This is a $575 watch with a Hardlex crystal. What are you doing, Seiko.

Yeah. It seemed like Seiko had the spot well covered. They had pretty good automatic options that a lot of people would get on their way nicer alternatives. and they let it go to persue a different price point. Seems like they could have done both.

A lot of people were customizing their popular models. I never met anyone that kept their Seiko stock. They replaced the bracelet, the bezel or the glass. LIW jumping in with models that use the same parts makes but improved options makes a lot of sense to me.

Now it’s up to Seiko to make something else better and make us want it.

We’ll see. I ordered the white one.
  7. I’ve scrolled back a year and did not see a mention of it so I’ll drop it here.

Long Island Watch is making watches now. Apparently this is not new. I used to watch a lot of his videos but I guess my interest in watches waned and lost track of his changes.

When I was watching his stuff he was focused on showcasing other brands and mods of Seikos. Now He’s basically releasing homages or near copies of models that Seiko has stopped making. I assume he had all the customization options (bezels, glass, bracelets, etc) he decided he could have someone mix and match and rebrand as Islanders.

I scrolled his offerings and videos of his releases over the last few years. I definitely missed out on some runs that I would have bought.

I saw these and would be happy to own any

  8. Each line usually has low, mid and high end tools. Just because it’s dewalt, there are crappy low end tool and high end buy it for life models. A lot of the cheap stuff comes out as great buys around Christmas and Father’s Day.

At some point or another I had makita 18v and 10v, Milwaukee 18v and 22v , ridgid 18 v and 12v , ryobi 18 v and 8(?) V, Bosch 12v and 18v. I’ve sold most and paired it down to three battery systems.

The ridgid battery warranty sounds great but if you want to get a warranty replacement you have to bring in all tools/batteries/chargers that were warrantied with the set you bought. How are you supposed to keep all that organized? It wasn’t worth it.

My three: Milwaukee 12v, Bosch 12v and Ridgid 18v.

Bosch 12v makes great small compact tools but don’t have the variety of Milwaukee 12v. Both make impact drivers and drills that will do almost anything you could need them to do and they are light. If I need a power tool it’s a 90% chance it’s a 12v.

For every thing else, it’s a ryobi.

  9. Highland Lanes

If you are looking for Wednesday night, they have a 6pm and an 830pm league. The 6 might be easier to get into as a solo and it's more social. The 830 is fairly top heavy, but there might be something in the "lower" teams. Call highland and leave a message for Sue, she is the secretary for the 830. Don't know the secretary for the 6 league.

Monday night has a league that begins on the 15th (meeting on the 8th..hoping to miss that one due to Texas game). It's a 16 week season and is more social. Ellen is the secretary for that league. DM if interested and I'll get you her number. I know there was at least one team with a vacancy the whole season in the fall.

After being told “Wednesday is full” twice, I mentioned it when bowling yesterday and the gal at the counter said there were a couple teams with vacancies.

Long story short, I am on a team. Thanks all.

  10. I don’t know the model names.

Three are different colors of the same model.

The green and bluish ones are released from SwissBianco who did limited runs of alox scales. I’m unsure if they still do. These are ten years old.

  11. Just a tip...an HEB produce guy told me to only buy the hydroponic strawberries because they'll generally last much longer in the fridge. He said if regular field grown strawberries get a lot of rain, their water content would be too high and they will spoil quickly.  If you eat them within 2-3 days, it don't make a shit.

I’ve had the opposite experience. Every time we buy the hydroponic, they look like picture perfect strawberries leaving the store spoil within days.
  12. Thanks. I went by on Sunday. The Wednesday 6pm league is full. I saw the short seasons that are about to start up and the times don’t really work with family schedules.

For now I think I’m planning on going Sunday mornings and just practice until fall. Maybe I can build some better habits.
