  1. Sure, that one, too.  Plenty others.  But when he turned all that bully charm to support of the Iraq invasion, his appearance was not so charming.  One thing, but a big thing.

I am a fan of Martin Amis’ writing, and his love of Hitchens as a brother has helped me process Hitchens with a bit of forgiveness.  He was just wrong, not a bad person.

So, here in Seattle we have a vote coming up. It’s a ballot initiative on whether the city should set up a board to manage nonprofit social housing coops basically. King County has a great website that summarizes the initiative, provides details, and has a pro and con position. The pro position is penned by some liberal Democrats. No surprise there. The con position is penned by some liberal, grassroots, activists, who believe it’s an unnecessary distraction that diverts resources from current efforts. Hard for me to distinguish who is right. They both seem like good people who disagree on how to achieve a noble goal.

Meanwhile, my friends back in Nebraska are fighting efforts to make drag shows illegal. Abortion, voting rights, and gun control are also on the docket.

    I almost feel guilty.

We are guilty, of a dreadful, selfish crime.  Making the right life choice for one goddam time.

  3. Yes, Petroleum.  And with the CE’s and ME’s I simply meant working with precisely known forces, dimensions, strengths etc leads to quite certain outcomes.  Not having enough fundamental knowns,  and having to run a thousand models to catch the possible distribution of outcomes eventually disabuses one of using the word ‘certainty’.

Not even close to true.  I'm an engineer, and I've worked with hundreds of them in my career.  I'd say the political distribution is probably equal between liberal/conservative/"libertarian" (so closer to 67/33 conservative/liberal if we are being honest, as most libertarians are just conservatives who don't want to admit it).

I suspect @Gatorubet nailed it as far as why engineers make bad jurors -- in general, we are looking for a black/white solution, and 51% is very unsettling.  That doesn't work in a court of law.

I was thinking most PE’s.   A biased sample, pun intended.  As for black and white thinking, I can see that for conventional civil and mechanical types. But for those who are soaked in probabilistic type modeling and decision processes, not at all black and white, quite the opposite.

    Better than Luanda?

    The Mishtress certainly thinks so.

Saw a movie set in Luanda, last week.  Cops and robbers derivative stuff.  But it was fascinating to see the changes in Luanda.  If there is now a meth problem there, the economy must be very robust.  We did wonder how in the world they did they chase scenes.  For those familiar with Luanda traffic.

  6. Maybe 2010 he was with his band with the Brazilian guitarist, at the Mountain Winery above San Jose.  We drove down from San Ramon and arrived way early, before parking was even open.  But they were sympathetic and let us in.  With drinks in hand we were walking behind the stage when the band comes up and does a 5 song sound check.  Just for us.  Hard to believe this happened.

I might be as big a fan as Brat.

Mentioned above too, but here’s his studio version with Don Julin on mandolin.

“Billy’s playing has really inspired me to sell my guitar.”

Nah.  Inspires everyone to simply put their whole body and soul into it.  Can’t match the talent, but approaching the passion will do fine.

  8. Yes, it does.  Take $.  But, much less than one might think..  The main issue for almost everyone is getting a job out of Texas.   Not everyone will get recruited, so there will be a long wait for most.  But after that wait….

I couldn't do SF or LA.

Seattle I've always had a great feeling for, but never done a winter there. DC I think I'd like due to its significance.

Seattle winters are long and dark, due to the 48 degree latitude.  But the ocean both moderates temps in the winter but provides lots of rain.  We get just a bit more rain annually than Houston, almost all Nov-April.
But the beauty does not abate for one second during the winter.  We’re here for the beauty.

  10. Seattle downtown has had a setback, but not the regional metro area, which is 90% of the place.

And Seattle’s issues have much to do with the pandemic.  Something like 2700 small shops and restaurants closed due to no customers.  Shopping patterns change.  And there are the homeless.

Still best place I’ve ever lived.
