Again, are we really seriously discussing football recruits comparing entire universities' general academic standing? Or do they compare football coaches, football facilities, their position coach, etc? Even the ones that are into academics, they tend to look at a college or department's standing. And even then, I imagine variables such as proximity to home, urban/rural/suburban setup, and about a dozen others come into play.

There is no pushback from me on the basic facts: Vandy is a top, private academic institution, not just in the SEC but across the country. Heck, it's probably better regarded than Baylor and TCU combined, I imagine.

At the end of the day, academic standing is likely just one variable in most recruits' school choice. And Texas A&M has a generally good reputation (which is really what US News rankings are based off of), even despite its shitty campus architecture, its history of being a small military, male-only college, etc etc.

Now you are comparing Vandy to TCU and Baylor?  Strange hill to die on.  Just admit you made a mistake and move on.

I see that "playing school" salient simply went over you guys' academic big head. Or, you just enjoy academic talk and nobody will come by to mention how "academic talk is not going away".

It was a simple point that A&M isn't a bottom feeder on academics, and besides, the most top flight football players who are even considering the choice of SEC schools aren't going to select Vandy, because "academics!".

Besides, my point still stands: A&M is a top-4 academic school in the SEC. Which would make it right in the same quartile as Florida, Georgia, and yes, Vandy. And in several academic disciplines, A&M is second to none in the SEC.

That "Top 4/quartile" statement has a a short shelf life.  Can you give us your revised take once UT moves to the SEC?

Another DL from Philly wanted in last year but we were seeking higher rated talent and that guy ended up going to Ole Miss, I think. That's why Enai White to Ole Miss was an early buzz. But A&M also landed a corner from Philly, who is already playing a lot and doing well in his freshman year. White was there to take in the atmosphere of the Bama game, and he has been to his top programs already on officials but not yet to A&M, even though he came by for unofficial over the summer.

Elijah Robinson is an ace recruiter, Elko is a good DC with track record of taking A&M from bad to better to good on D as a whole. Jimbo is a good closer.  Jimbo also got *several* of UGA's assistants over the last two years, especially so at the start of this year.  Jimbo can also point to several players drafted into the NFL already, plus more on the way, including potential first rounders. And not every 18 year old wants big city lights. As for academics-- even if you seriously think these top flight talents are "playing school" then A&M is easily in the top 4 of the SEC right alongside UGa, Florida, and Vandy.

If it's all just about money bags then we would have landed Dindy. But he has personal connections at OU, and those won out. Kendal Daniels, the top player out of Oklahoma and #5 safety last year committed to A&M, only to decommit after his position coach (Aristide) was poached by Miami.  You guys got some good talent when you had some ace young recruit/bagmen in Mensa's regime too.

Vandy, smallish gap to FL, then smallish gap to FL, then a not-so-smallish gap to A&M.  I'm not saying A&M is LSU, but it's not those other 3.

If blOU with Caleb Williams at the helm goes on to crush the rest of their schedule to a similar degree, I'll gladly acknowledge you're correct. But I don't see that happening. What I saw in the second half from our defense IMO qualifies as a collapse, and the notion that we should just accept it as a fait accompli because of the skill/talent gap between our squads is a pretty transparent post-hoc justification.

We just lost to our most hated rival for the fourth fucking time in a row, in a game where we had a 96.7% chance of winning in the 3rd quarter. If your takeaway is that it's OK because we were mudholing them in the first half, that's your takeaway and it's fine. But to me that's just another 'moral victory'-type justification.

Leave it to this pedantic bitch to reference the CCG in 2018 as the 1st of 4 in a row, but not point out that we won the RRS in 2018. FFS man, spreading hate and discontent seems to be your life goal.

  5. It’s not like they scored quick by going out there and throwing four verts all day. First half offensive TDs included a 75 yard screen pass, a two play drive starting from the two yard line, a three play drive starting at midfield, a six play drive, and a two yard TD set up by a 50 yard Bijan run. I understand the frustration of watching the defense get tired because it was very evident in the first half that OU would be able to exploit it, but unless you want them to coach guys to just fall down on the field and leave points on the field there isn’t a whole lot else you can ask for.

Rational posts like this have no place on this thread. Take this shit to the cloakroom.

    Sincerely,

  6. He's in his third year of training as a QB. Not one. Three. Let's keep the fact set straight.
The reality is that if someone is going to be a big dog, they're going to bite you as a pup. It's one thing to need experience, and quite another to shit yourself and collapse into a puddle of timid insecurity at the first sign of adversity playing on the road. The psychological aspects of playing QB aren't easily changed for a player. Some guys have it, and others simply do not.
What I'm saying is, I'm not writing Jagger McJaggsalot off just yet, but I'm probably writing him off. He'll be throwing darts at UTSA this time next season.

Y’all are about to trigger the Lake Travis jocksniff that declared Garrett Wilson to UT. I have personal knowledge that GW was never going to commit to Herman and his dad thought he was a complete asshole. But, back to the program for LT guy to jump in all butthurt.

Your team was 34th in defensive FEI last year. lol Y’all just played a bunch of shitty teams.

Texas was 13th in FEI and we fired our HC for sucking. Y’all were 17th in FEI, lost your starting QB and 4 OL and convinced yourselves you’d be a juggernaut this year. Never change, aggy.

I think it is safe to say that we are about to find out if Canada is now hooked up to the Interwebs.

  8. partially because it's game week, partially because i've had too much eagle rare, primarily because my 8:00 call was cancelled - it's time. as a reminder, i've done this on here or tangentially related boards the past decade or two, and i've been within one game of the correct won/loss record every year, apart from the time i watched kenny hill in columbia and overdosed on a variety of substances.
tl:dr: this is a very good roster, with a very good coaching staff, with a very favorable schedule. incredibly strong front 7, sneaky good skill position players and a mature, focused group of players. the achilles heel will be speed: both on offense (can we find someone to get safeties out of the box) and defense (we're playing two fundamentally sound, imposing strong safeties, neither with a 5th gear), which unfortunately could bite us in the ass several times in this modern version of college football.
i'm calling for 10-2 with losses to bama and ole miss. for those that want to see a quasi-sober look at the team, continue:
qb: who the fuck knows. haynes king is a gamer, won a state championship, great athlete and responds well to jimbo's abusive qb coaching. like every qb in the world, i have no idea until the bullets start flying. jimbo is a good enough schemer and king has enough tools to get us through 75% of the year in good shape but will he step up when needed? we'll see. calzada has an nfl arm, and otherwise is a weird kid. if king is legit, the ceiling for this roster gets really interesting.
rb: if spiller stays healthy, he's going to have a great year. he's worked his ass off, is in incredible shape and is a really instinctual, tough runner. he's one gear away from being a heisman-type kid, but can still be an incredibly productive college running back. achane is more than a track guy, but i worry about him getting more than 8-10 touches a game. we'll see what he can handle. lj johnson looks like a kid who took the spring off. he'll get there, but needs some time. rest of the guys are jags.
wr: weird room. chase lane looks really good, but in an ideal world he'd probably be your 2nd or 3rd guy. ainias smith will be moved around and productive, but this offense really needs an outside guy to at least occasionally threaten people. caleb chapman was starting to come on last year before the acl at florida, but not sure if he's back, and demond demas remains a guy who can't stay on the field. i think via pure frustration jimbo will force this down the field early, but no idea if sustainable against the better defenses. excited to see moose muhammad and yulkeith brown based on conversations, but i'll believe their production when i see it.
te: wydermyer is a borderline all-american. everything else is a bit of hope. baylor cupp is a freak on paper, but can't stay healthy (shoutout to his mom), max wright is the blocking guy who should be able to slip out and catch 10-15 balls, and eli stowers actually looks pretty good if he can put on another 15 pounds.
ol: who knows? fun times! the freshman have quickly risen through the ranks, making the glass half empty (oh shit, the 2-deep sucks), or half full (wow, these guys are really talented) - i think it's probably a bit of both. from left to right: ruben fatheree is a freak. i'm all in on him being a top 10 pick in 3 years. he's 6'8", 320, moves like a guy playing small forward and has responded to everything thrown to him so far. that being said, it's going to take a bit for him to get up to speed, which is why i think tennessee transfer jahmir johnson starts the year and gives way by bama. aki ogunbiyi is going to be very solid at left guard and layden robinson should be decent at right guard, as long as he doesn't have to pull very often. kenyon green will probably end up at right tackle and be fine, and the question will be if luke matthews is actually real, or if one of the true freshmen (wykoff or bryce foster) has to man the center position. both are going to be good, but how quickly is a great question. center could be a potential danger spot.
dl: a lot of talent. leal should be a top 20 pick at strongside end, mckinnely jackson, jaydon peevy, isaiah rakes and shemar turner (who is a freak) will anchor dt, and some combo of tyree johnson, michael clemons, fadil diggs and donnell harris will make weakside end at worst acceptable. as long as elijah robinson and terry price are employed, this will be a top 5-10 unit in college football. need to find guys to get to the quarterback in spite of elkos lane-heavy scheme to be elite.
lb: interesting room. aaron hansford is getting a lot of buzz, but need him to make more plays. really good athlete but still learning. andre white had a great year as the 3rd linebacker last year, but edgerrin cooper just may be too good to keep off the field. still can't believe lsu didn't up the ante here. couple of decent options behind here in antonio doyle, chris russell and tarian lee, all who would have been starting anytime over the last 2 decades of a&m football.
cb: myles jones is long, and a step slow. jaylon jones is smooth as hell, confident and a step slow. brian george has slowly put it together out of juco but probably a step slow. tyreek chappel is a freshman and not a step slow, but needs some time to figure it out. those will be the 4 corners. duece harmon is a lot of fun, but probably a nickel moving forward. we're talented, but susceptible here.
s: demani richardson is beautiful, and probably the best safety at a&m since terrance kiel (rip). he'd probably best suited for a box guy, however mike elko is obsessed with playing leon o neal next to him, who - despite all the bullshit - has turned into a pretty solid lane-filling safety, albeit one that runs a 4.65. for the life of me, i don't understand why he doesn't rotate antonio johnson, erick young or even freshman jardin gilbert here, but elko builds his defense back-end forward, and he's going to live or die with those two as the final help. we saw bama going over the top repeatedly last year and i fear ole miss doing the same, but we'll see if there are holes patched here.
    st: we'll be fine.
should be a fun year. bookmark it and and yell at me when we're either in the playoff or win 6.

    TL;DR

Will dominate Prairie View A&M and get skull-fucked by Bama.

  9. What’s the difference?  I said I didn’t like that he chose the NIL money over his team that helped get him where he is.  That same money will be there in December after the HS playoffs.  He turned his back on them. All those years of hard work to try and win a championship are gone.  He’s a quitter. Cade Clubinik could have done the same thing but chose to support his friends, community and school.  So tell me how I am wrong?

You died on the Tunmise hill bro…just stop!

Bag money is what I consider paying money to a recruit or student without the payor receiving anything similar of value.

Orangeblood paying players for interviews is legit because it boosts their visibility as a business.

Some rich lawyer paying a player $20k for his autograph doesn't seem like a legit business transaction.

With that said, I will let this topic go. Obviously, there is enough interest from posters here to try to do it. I prefer to offer my support, as I posted in the following thread: "Surly Horns Burnt Ends NIL Program- How YOU can help Texas with the NIL right now!

"I own a full-service commercial solar business in California and have an installation partner based in Austin, TX who we are planning to buy. If you guys living in Texas can identify building owners (including UT campus) who are Texas alums and wouldn't mind going solar, we can pay the players a lot of money ($50-100k per site) for a cameo. Perhaps the player does the unveiling, signs autographs and take pictures, so the building owner gets to keep them as souvenirs or hang them on the walls. The building owner doesn't pay a dime for anything. We would pay for the system and pay the player for helping with the biz dev. It would be less work for all involved. I am just throwing it out there as an option that I can support."

This can be a huge money making machine given how many buildings and parking lots that could have solar on them.

So you want to crowd source the sales function.  Got it.
