Need that #2 something fierce.

I keep seeing Schwarber's name come up and I'd love to see Kyle from Waltham return, but not sure how realistic that is (probably not at all).  I think Josh Naylor is the youngest 1B/DH type FA and his spray chart looks like a match for Fenway for sure.  No clue when Casas is set to return and probably not trying to add a LHH in the same role?  idk.  Pete Alonso is a RHH who would crush at Fenway and is only 31 too.

Would like to re-sign Bregman, if for nothing else but the leadership.

Yep. Would also like to see Story stay. He is solid and seems to help out the team as another leader.

I agree. I don't believe we can expect to truly contend without resigning Story (if he opts out), resigning Bregman (I assume he'll opt out), and spending on a true SP2.

Bregman to sign with the Washington Nationals.

Where do you see that?... All I see is a fake FB post.

So, I get a text from one of my buddies that Bregman is >going to sign< with the Washington Nationals and I go online and there’s a story with the headline “Washington Nationals Signing Alex Bregman in MLB Free Agency.”  So, I ran with the story…without reading the article….which turned out to be one of those bullshit articles with a headline that took liberties with the truth.  Clickbait.  I’m an old and my bud who texted me is an old and, when you’re old, you do at least one embarrassing thing a day.  And you blame it on being old.  The worst part of getting older is getting old.  But it beats the alternative.

The alternative. Being a Yankees fan? Yeah, fuck that.

Center field: Ceddanne Rafaela, Red Sox

Rafaela has won his first career Gold Glove Award after a stellar defensive showing in center field -- the only outfielder with more than his +21 OAA was the Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong. Rafaela’s +20 DRS ranked second among Major League outfielders only to Steven Kwan last season, and he had the best average jump in the game -- +5.3 feet vs. average.

Right field: Wilyer Abreu, Red Sox

Abreu joins Rafaela to make the Red Sox the first AL team with multiple outfielders winning a Gold Glove Award in the same year since the 2022 Guardians. Overall, it’s the fifth time in Red Sox history that multiple outfielders have been named Gold Glove winners -- also 2018 (Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts), 1978 and ’79 (Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn) and 1968 (Carl Yastrzemski and Reggie Smith).

It’s the second Gold Glove Award for Abreu, who also won the honor in 2024. He finished the ’25 campaign tied for second in MLB lead among right fielders with +15 DRS (the Rangers' Adolis Garcia led with +16 DRS, while Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. also had +15 DRS) and he led AL right fielders with +8 OAA.

No surprise.

Veteran shortstop Trevor Story will not opt out of his contract and instead will return to the Boston Red Sox in 2026, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Story, who had two years and $55 million remaining on his deal, could have voided it. Boston then would have had the option to tack on another year at $25 million.

Story, who turns 33 next week, fashioned a bounce-back 2025 season, hitting .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs, 96 RBIs and 31 stolen bases in 32 attempts. While Story's defense at shortstop ranked among the worst in MLB in publicly available defensive metrics, he played 157 games this year, a steady presence amid an injury-riddled season.

So what is everyone's wish list for the offseason?  I know a lot of fans want to bring Bregman back but I'm not sold on that unless we are getting him much cheaper than last season.  I would rather use that $40 million elsewhere when we have Mayer at 3B.  My wish list in order of preference is as follows.

Power bat at 1B/DH (Schwarber)

#2 starter

Another power bat for 1B/DH (Alonso)

SP

RP

utility infielder

This is assuming we don't do something crazy like trade for Skubal or Skenes.  That would be the top priority if it was realistic.  We have to get more pop out of 1B/DH this next season.  Really need 50-60 HRs from those two positions.  We are pretty set everywhere else position wise but there just isn't a lot of true power.  Anthony and Abreu could both hit 30 HRs but we shouldn't expect it.  I really like Duran but would be ok trading him if it addresses a need on the wish list.  Would also love to be rid of Yoshida but I doubt that happens.  I'm good with Romy platooning at 2B with someone else.  Think we are set at OF, SS, C and 3B (Mayer).  Crochet is obviously a stud ace but there is no guy we can rely on to be the next man up.  Bello is fine as the 3rd SP but that could be upgraded.  I don't want to go into next year relying on Connelly and Tolle to both be good starters.  Closer is set but you can never have enough relievers.
