Carbon Tax (Politics)

The older I get the more of an ethical duty I feel towards the planet (and consequently future humans) and the less I feel towards the humans who are already here.  So to me the issues that are becoming more interesting are those related to the environment.  Heard a straightforward Planet Money podcast that discussed a carbon tax and based on what else is going on outside the US, it seems like we may be able to discuss this in earnest when the Dotard leaves office.

Well, Mr. Lott and Mr. Breaux aren’t simply proposing a tax, but a deal: a carbon tax in exchange for two other things. First, they want “an outright repeal of the Clean Power Plan,” which allows the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate carbon emissions and which the Trump administration is moving to cancel. Second — and most consequentially — they want to give fossil fuel companies immunity from lawsuits seeking to hold them accountable for damage they have done to the climate. As their proposal puts it, “Robust carbon taxes would also make possible an end to federal and state tort liability for emitters.”

The proposal would freeze rules requiring automakers to build cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars, including hybrids and electric vehicles, and unravel one of President Barack Obama’s signature policies to combat global warming. It would also challenge the right of states to set their own, more stringent tailpipe pollution standards, setting the stage for a legal clash that could ultimately split the nation’s auto market in two.

I realize that there are problems with emissions standards that just get crammed down people's throats but everything about Trump is dirty, and disgusting, and hurts the environment.

I realize Texas isn't going to be behind him, but American needs you, Jerry Brown.

I tend to agree with you. It has occurred to me that the coming generations (millennial and younger) are going to be increasingly militant when it comes to climate change. When I was a kid, global warming was this abstract thing that was going to happen in the future. We were taught to recycle and not pollute, but as far as political issues it was pretty far down the list for the vast majority of my generation. These days, kids are subjected, almost on a daily basis, to news of flooding cities, rising coastlines, states on fire, and other real and catastrophic consequences. It would be pretty smart for those in power to start really addressing this issue as opposed to either denying it or simply paying it lip service. Because there is a wave coming.
