Went on Sunday. Freaking hot and incredibly dusty.

Knew little of the lineup, as usual. But had a great time at The Dare and especially Midnight Generation (tito's tent), neither of which I was familiar with previously. Enjoyed Rainbow Kitten Surprise as well.

Killers were good too, though I also thought Whiskey River opener was pretty lame. And I agree it seemed like the least crowded closing act I can remember, but figured that was the youngsters going to John Summitt, which I would have like to see too, but the less packed crowd was nice.

Especially after my fellow late 30s white friend and I had posted up somewhere for T-Pain, and as his showtime approached the dense crowd that formed around us was so noticeably younger that we felt a wee bit out of place. So, moved back for a bit more breathing room. But I joked that during that set, no matter where we stopped and posted up, the age demographic around us just kept decreasing over time. High energy set though.

Used to go three-days every year, but after a hiatus for a few years I've been liking just going all out for one day.

I did open to close all three days.  Its not easy (I'm Gen-X for perspective) but I still power through.  I recovered Saturday and Sunday mornings from the previous days but Monday... nah, man, that sucked.  The back and the lungs by the end of day three are pissed off.

I watched The Killers on the Hulu livestream and was completely underwhelmed. Have heard for years how amazing their live shows were and this was the most basic white-ass music and performance I could imagine. Whiskey River was an absolutely terrible rendition.

I guess I just don't get it.

They were ok.  It was a big slick Vegas-style production put over a rock band context.  I thought WR was kind of a fun nod, though as you state it was pretty basic.  Would I have rather seen Doja Cat?  No doubt.

I don't know how you do that anymore man, but more power to you.  I usually get there around 3-ish until close.  I used to go open to close to get my money's worth, but there came a point where it felt more like an endurance test than a good time.  I've found my happy medium.

The problem with that approach for me is that some of the best performances I've seen often come early in the day.  James Bay (2014) is an example.  True Believers (2013) is another.

This is completely valid.  I just have to take my chances.  I recognize at this point that while staying all day is an option, it's just not a fun option any more.  It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.  Especially since I go 3 days every year.  By the time Sunday comes around, I'm much more sanguine about just sitting in one place and seeing whoever happens to be on the stages on either side of me.  It's just how I do it now.  That and spending Tuesday coughing up little bits of Zilker as we speak as a happy reminder of good times.  Yum!

I was in the tent for that one- great time. I remember the drummer throwing his drum sticks and bailing mid-set. IIRC I read later (here or on reddit) that he was having trouble with his hands or something.

Honestly, I've bailed on more headliners than I can count.  Kanye/Coldplay come to mind -- both sucked, I just went home.  The Cure was another, but that was because of rain.  The crowds are so insane for the headliners that I just don't have the gumption to fight my way close enough to matter.  I remember watching the Foos recently and thinking "what the fuck am I doing here, I've seen them a half dozen times from 3X as close as this?".

I went home on all those you mentioned.  Same same.

There was the one year its started raining for Tom Petty and they were delaying starting.  So I was like, "Fuck this I'm not standing out here in the rain."  Walked all the way back to pick up my ride at the high school across the river - just as they started back up again.  But I was too tired to walk back.

Looking at my notes for Sunday:

Chuwi - Really fun Puerto Rican band.  This was probably my "nice surprise" of the day.  The crowd was almost as fun as the band.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise - Saw about half this set.

Wet Leg - Saw about half of this set.  Reminded me of The Breeders, but if they were fit and hung out at the beach.

Gigi Perez - Meh.

T-Pain - Damn, this man came to put on a show. Non stop fun.

MK.Gee - I totally did not get this one.  Like, there were times when I was like, "Is there even someone playing? Or is it just that the equipment is left on and making noise?"

The Killers - No further discussion needed.

I feel bad that I wrote this guy off early on.  His cover of "War Pigs" blew my mind -- terrific band and he totally brought it.  Live and learn, I guess.

I wrote him off, and then a younger hipper person at work said, "You should really go see him."  She was right.

Now I'm off to look up his version of "War Pigs"...

Here you go:

That jam at the end . . . every time I watch it I'm like WHAT THE FUCK?  Staggering musicianship, tight as hell, huge groove, just spectacular.

2006. That was worth sticking around for- great performance.

Hah, that wasn't my intent... but it was a damn good performance and the last time I saw Tom Petty.

At the time I lived across the river from Zilker- and less than a month later the Rolling Stones played Zilker Park, which was also a great time.

I was at that Stones show.  I was in Dallas, literally getting in a car to go to the State Fair when a friend in Austin called and said, "You want to go see the Stones tonight?"  Why yes, yes I do.  So instead of going to the Fair, I was southbound 35 pronto.
