I know a lot of people are in a hurry to demean and bemoan any and every use of AI but the fact is that it is here to stay and we are entering a transhuman era. Myself, I have bristled at the notion in general and a lot of its applications, but I may as well lean into it a bit more.

I'm obviously not a famous musician but I sing and songwrite and listen to a lot and a line came into my head. Generally I'll just fantasize or write something like that down or maybe try and write a song. I had a thought, though, what if I generate a prompt out of this and see what "AI" can do with it?

So I did that. And... the result was pretty fucking cool and featured a couple albums and artists that I already love.

Crazy time to be alive.

Of those listed, I love The National although that isn't one of my favorite albums of theirs. Channel Orange is one of the greatest albums of all time and I adore "Carrie and Lowell".

Everyone knows about OK Computer already.

Seems like you are just short cutting the journey though, which is the most rewarding part.

That seems reductionist. A lot of people may never take that journey in the first place. My knowledge is almost as comprehensive as it comes, so for me, maybe AI points out something in the weeds that I had never come across. I mean just from that one prompt there are multiple albums that I may want to check out. I've been playing around with it a bit more and gave it a fairly recent song that I love and it returned a couple of albums I liked a lot from when I was in high school. That is a commentary on myself that I otherwise wouldn't have obtained.

"Why do I like this song so much? What else is like it?"

"You like it because it reminds you of when you were 17"

I could piss money at a therapist for a year before they told me anything like that.

Granted platforms like Spotify already kind of do this with suggestions and autoplay but having it be more targeted appears to be much more rewarding.

Mess around with it, man. I think you'd be surprised. Chat GPT wanted money from me but Perplexity appears to be freeish? so far.

Is it though? That's what I am asking. Just because you didn't make those connections in the moment doesn't mean you were never gonna make em. And the understanding you gain from doing organically is deeper.

I'm not opposed to anyone using it like you are other than environmental reasons, but it definitely misses the neural connections that come with doing it the long way.

The other thing is because of my age I'm blasted with 30th anniversaries of all the music from my teens and 20s so I get sent down these holes more than can keep up with anyways. I couldn't even begin to actually look for more.

Yes - I think it is. Hence my point about paying a therapist to not arrive at that conclusion.

I can instantly and intelligently give myself commentary on my own life.

Give it a shot, man. I think it will surprise you.

Appreciate the discussion regardless.

You also could have just posted that prompt question as a thread on here, and people would have given you their suggestions.

I've been waiting for the right thread to post this amazing song and performance. She's talking about her relationship with Ryan Adams when she was younger. She's a great lyricist, and I love her phrasings.
