I’ve been questioning Saban’s hires over the past 5 years as much as anyone. I’ve got posts on this thread, the Saban/Bama thread on the football board and I’m sure several others where I go into some depth on it. But let’s be clear, early Saban at LSU and Bama was as good as it gets with the hires, especially on the defensive side. Bo Davis was promoted multiple times in the 2000’s on multiple Saban staffs. He was outstanding enough that Mack Brown money-whipped him into coming to Texas when numerous experts considered Davis a top 5 position coach and recruiter across the CFB landscape. It was only due to the simple idiocy of Charlie Strong that Texas lost Davis. By then, the SEC footprint had gone competely nuts and Clemson was emerging to boot. DL recruiting in the mid-teens to now among LSU, Fisher-FSU, Freeze-Ole Miss, Pruitt-Tenn, Clemson, Auburn, Bama, UGA, OSU, and ATM in the southeast has involved the dirtiest, most hate-filled recruiting in the history of the sport. It has rivaled college basketball recruiting. In the midst of that, Saban hired Davis back and they crushed it. Then Davis got busted doing something on another level with the help of some “analysts” and Saban had no choice but to let him go. Davis went to the NFL as a condition to the good graces granted in keeping things private. One of the first people contacted by Sarkisian was Davis after Sarkisian knew he had the Texas job. The guy left an NFL job to come back to Texas. He withstood the public posting of him losing his mind in a profanity-laced tirade at an extremely pious and straight-laced school known for putting its reputation above good personnel decisions. He’s turned down offers back to the NFL, back to LSU and back to Bama. Now, I wonder, are all of those regimes who have or want the guy just a large group of clowns masquerading as people who know something about football and recruiting? Or is it possible, and believe me, this … is … a hypothetical, that the guys on Surly doubting Davis’ recruiting and coaching acumen are just a large band of buffoons pounding out the first hints of nonsense that cross their minds onto keyboards that spew this unintentional comedy onto this forum?38 points

Texas, for the first time in its history, is actually recruiting talent at a National level, from places like Florida and IMG Academy, and Mater Dei in Cali, among others. We are pulling elite talent from Louisiana. This obsession with "in-state recruits" is just fucking bizarre and very out of date. We just signed the #1 RB in the country from Florida. That was a dream scenario 20 years ago, let alone 4....there is no question that the roster that Sark has assembled, through recruiting and the portal, at nearly every position, has as much upside as we have ever seen. Outside of a Collin Simmons type impact Edge, this roster has talented depth at every level. For the first time in well over a decade, we have an OL that doesn't instantly create the gag reflex. "It's a very tall ask." Jesus Christ man....get ahold of yourself. The only thing really holding this team back is game-day acumen from the head man, and that is still an open debate (and meant for the football board). But this is easily the best overall roster Texas has had since Butterteeth was seal-clapping on the sidelines.37 points

This something that boils my blood about this tribalism based around MAGA and the new brand of conservatism embraced by much of the mainstream Republican Party. My family has a long history of adoption and involvement in the Texas foster care systems across several generations. I even adopted my own children out of foster care and have been heavily involved in advocacy and volunteer activities for almost 15 years. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of the horrors of child abuse and neglect up close. Some of those things have required a good deal of therapy to keep from going full psycho vigilante on these monsters. My own daughter suffered unspeakable and rage inducing abuse and neglect for the first five years of her life. A part of my heart will be forever broken after a single reading of her case file. I’ve done my damndest to make her feel safe and loved, to try to be a living example of a good man and positive role model. She just graduated high school in May and is more happy and well adjusted that I dared to dream 15 years ago. But part of me still screams and rages for what her first five years of life were like for her The point I was getting to is that I’ve seen these victims and the criminal perpetrators close up and often for many years. The majority of people abusing kids do not fit the narrative being pushed by Qanon and MAGA. It’s complete deflection. So many of these pieces of shit try to hide behind phony Christianity and phony patriotism. It’s maddening that this nonsense has any traction at all.32 points

They’re big on the notion of targets of opportunity in each class for specific positions of strength in that cycle. They’ve piled on at different positions when they have a wave of interest from a deep position group. The DT/NT spots have been weak in Texas and they had no reason to be winning in the SEC footprint until the emergence of NIL. Now that Texas is headed to the SEC with timing certainty and is armed with NIL, Texas can go into the rich territories for DL talent. It’s still not in Texas, but it is there in the southeast. They’re working on loading up and then balancing out with this class and those to follow, similar to what happened with OL and LB ahead of this cycle, two other positions in deep, deep shit when this staff showed up. Multiple posters on the 2023 thread were mocking Choate the same way you idiots are now bagging on Davis. You guys can want something different to occur, or to have occurred, but that is pointless. They were not going to stack elite DT/NT talent en masse until now without a deep class or two in Texas. The knocking of Bo Davis is laughable, to boot.26 points

I think one of my favorite things about the recruiting board is watching Sydney and CTJ trying to wrangle the cats and put the toothpaste back in the tube once this thread goes off the rails. It is like a symphony of destruction wrapped in a melange of mean tweets. Feelings are hurt, pussies are rubbed, ignore buttons are pressed, but most importantly we know that it is not necessarily the diamonds, but the jewelry stores we visited along the way.25 points

Good quotes from Melvin ... “Then if you look at the history, like one thing I looked at is everybody says the school did this, the school did that, the school produced this amount of D-linemen. But who’s the coach at that D-line?” Hills said. “Alabama produced D-linemen — Coach Bo was the coach at Alabama. LSU had produced D-linemen — Coach Bo was the coach at LSU. Every time you see a great D-lineman come, Coach Bo had coached them. I even hear from different coaches who say Coach Bo is the GOAT for D-line.” I’m going after Dom (Dominick McKinley) Before D'antre (Robinson) commits, I’m going after him, make sure he’s a Texas commit. First, the man specified "Defensive Line Recruiting" and cited Davis. Kwiakowski techincally coaches outside LB, which I suppose in this defense is a gray area with Edge. Either way, he said defensive line was Bo's fault, all of it. And yeah, Davis does recruit and help out all over the line, and he's fucking good, both at recruiting and development. Throwing his name into fire for the shit sandwich he inherited, including conference affiliation, a decade of malaise as a program, and no NIL is pretty absurd. Sydir Mitchell is a huge fucking win. And in the meantime, developing former bust level players in Coburn and Sweat on the back end of their careers into draft picks, and improving the stock of Ojomo is noteworthy. And recruits have taken notice. They'll notice more when Murphy starts getting draft talk as well. We're going to be fine.18 points

Liberal Arts.... Ya mean the people who do really good analysis on countries and conflicts? The most senior DOD Analyst I work with, who also was a Tank Company Commander, has two degrees in history, speaks 4 languages, and advises congress on Africa and Eastern Europe weekly. I say we draft Lawyers first, then engineers, especially those that work for Tesla, ERCOT or TxDot.15 points

Cool, so you don’t have the balls to back up your statements with any kind of analysis, and instead hide behind the “I don’t want to hurt our players feelings” which also conveniently keeps you from going out on a limb and having your thoughts and opinions potentially analyzed and assessed by a forum of very knowledgeable fans. and god forbid have a debate about recruiting on the recruiting board. Jaray Bledsoe was a 5 star talent whose ranking was lowered because he was a grade risk. He seems to have settled at Texas quite well, and his mom cited Bo Davis as the specific reason they chose Texas. The mom who I believed moved to an Austin with her kid. Sydir Mitchell literally we beat every program in the country for…Jmond Tapp was a stud. The other guys Ive mentioned are highly thought of kids. We’re loading up on big bodies this year in the interior. Where ISNT the talent infusion, exactly? We’re literally missing a Simmons, and that’s it.15 points

Your post was great and provides an important perspective. The reality of the filthy world of child exploitation is that much of the real necessary work to combat it in no way resembles an action movie and is performed by nameless, overworked staffers sitting somewhere in an underfunded, forgotten cubicle farm with high turnover. While important, it's also "boring", unglamorous, and perhaps most damning of all (to the Q/MAGA crowd) calls for skills and values conventionally seen as soft and feminine, such as: child care, nurturing, trauma counseling. The criminal justice system is working just fine, if you want to see people get punished. If you want children not to be exploited or abused, maybe you shouldn't have spent decades devaluing social work and underfunding the programs intended to get children out of dangerous situations.14 points

The revisionist history on the 2022 DL class is great. Bledsoe and Ross were ranked as the #2 and #3 DL in Texas that year. We beat out Ole Miss and Miss State for Bryant. Maybe it wasn’t the ideal class due to not knowing where Bledose’s body was going to go, but how were we supposed to know Kris Ross would be the one of the few DL ever who needed to gain 30 pounds and decided to lose 30 pounds instead? Also, love all this being discussed and debated on a day where we are about to land a DT from Louisiana that multiple SEC programs wanted.11 points

One or more of these guys will start the season 1 for 11 and a bunch of shitty posters will flood the threads talking about how much they suck. Those posters will then disappear until the conference tournament when we look like crap. They will then disappear again as we roll through Omaha. Mark it.11 points
