  1. Just back from spending 4 days in Amarillo (family estate finish-up.)  Do not recommend-and I grew up there.  If you have to eat, look for some local place, like Landshark for old style burgers or Los Braceros on West 6th (only that one-) or Metropolitan down southwest for American bistro-style food.  Good luck.

    Say what, now??

Some of the liberal denominations have taken sex ed into their educational curricula since the schools are pretty much limited to “abstinence, abstinence, abstinence.”

This is still a tough sell. The Easter Bunny thing was unsolicited and not coordinated by the school. We’re supposed to accept that a random can get in a costume and hand out candy to children in the parking lot? Oh oops. Not candy but condoms.

Admittedly I grew up in TX and received “abstinence only” education thanks to conservatives on the school board but I’ve never heard of a *pharmacist* doing sex ed. What is it about filling prescriptions that makes a pharmacist uniquely qualified to talk about condoms? Proximity to the aisle at the pharmacy with the lube?

And why are the condoms in Easter eggs at all? If you’re giving away condoms to adults to encourage safe sex- what the fuck are they doing in Easter eggs?

So even assuming all this is true, the pharmacist furry was planning on going to give out candy to children, but still didn’t take enough precautions to prevent this kind of mix up? No markings or stickers on the condom eggs? She didn’t shake the egg to see if it had candy vs a condom? She was completely unaware of the mix up until later?

No. Nope. I don’t buy any of that bullshit

I agree, story is pretty weak even if true.  Pharmacists are actually quite well qualified to teach sex ed, being the medical professionals usually best informed about contraception, STD prevention and treatment, and AIDS prevention and treatment.  I’ve taught sex ed at a variety of churches over the years and it’s an enlightening experience.  Sorry about your education.

  4. I’ve flown out of and into Amarillo a couple of hundred times since 1970; kinda fascinating how service in/out has peaked and deteriorated.  I think it was better when you had to drag your baggage across the tarmac and climb the stairs into a Texas International (?) turboprop.  I’d consider driving before Allegiant.

This is kind of funny- we were supposed to leave Monday, but the RV wouldn’t start. Dead battery. It was fine until we took it in to get repaired (floor was finger up so we installed carpet, problem with rear view mirror and the piping to the black tank had broken on our surly road trip to Arkansas) but they fucked something up and were like “we need a battery in there” so I did and then a month later won’t start- new battery is dead.
Anyway- it wouldn’t start so the guy had to come out and I went to work. Skipped Monday. I went in Tuesday morning to work and told her- pack all the shit and get it ready to go- I have shit I have to do and then I will pick up groceries and we will leave.
got down here to the beach and we have no chairs or towels and the kids have no flip flops.
My wife the logistical genius. Ha!  I knew I shouldn’t have just assigned that job over to her. Next time I will put the 9 year old boy in charge of the logistics.

Good call on the 9 year old; at 9 my son (now 38) was packing himself for scout camp outs. I guarantee he wouldn’t have forgotten his chair or towel.  Hell, he had a list (self-serving, of course-think Skittles and extra batteries) for me-the wandering assistant scoutmaster.  Funny how unreliable wives are………………….

  6. Maui 3 times ,but not with kids.   Definitely do the drive to the top of Haleakala-take jackets!  Road to Hana, hope none of yours are prone to carsickness.  Lahaina is extremely touristy but does have some nice historical stuff.  If i went with kids, I’d do a luau.  Reserve the car now.  Paia Fish Market.  Kahului for upscale “hippie” shopping.

This may not be thread for you.

Hah! I have Vienna sausages, Underwood’s deviled ham, Wolf brand chili (no beans), and tuna foil packs in the pantry; Earl Campbell hot links and pickled jap slices in the fridge.  And Tostitos and Frito Hot Bean Dip!  Life is good, and this thread is endlessly entertaining.

I’ve concocted worse and eaten it with gusto; doesn’t mean I wouldn’t give somebody else shit for throwing together something that would make women run and children burst into tears……….

  9. Hanalei Bay on Kaua’i-on my short list for the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen

Taos-edgy and artsy; the confluence point of 3 cultures that have never liked each other much-call it creative tension

NOLA-the food! The drink!  The music!

Key West-mostly the fishing, then the food and the people watching

Fort Worth-the museums, the friendly West Texas bustle

Aren't even the longet SWA flights just a few hours?  I mean other than Hawaii or NY to LA?  Do they even do that?  I assure you no one needed leg stretching from the 30 min flight from SA to HOU

You are wrong, good sir.  I can assure you that I need leg stretching after 30 minutes on a really nice couch, let alone an SWA seat.  Just wait until you are old and semi- crippled up!

The Coopers in Llano isn't worth a trip anymore (nor has been for any of the probably 2-3 times a year I have been there over the last 4 or 5 years) - doesn't matter what time, the brisket is really not great. sausage has been super overcooked. only two things i got there that were really good was a steak one night and the big chop (obviously)

I’ve managed to avoid Cooper’s for the last couple of years, thankfully.  Only go there for visitors that want to try the hype.  Only good meat is the big pork chop, but the beans are nice………….

I ate at Hard 8 in Stephenville once.  Once.  Their business model is evidently based on feeding drunken junior aggys from Tarleton, desperate deer hunters, and ignorant 281 travelers from the Metroplex headed for Fredericksburg.  Reminded me of the “BBQ” in Amarillo I was subjected to as a mere child.  Hard 8?  Hard pass.

Black Eyed Pea, sort of like Chilis was at one point not "low brow".   Then they both expanded rapidly, got down with the Sysco and became teh suck.

Maybe I hold that opinion only because I grew up in Dallas and remember them from being a kid/teen in the 80s.

The original Chili’s, just north of Walnut Hill, east of 75 on Greenville, was like a religious experience in 79 or ‘80 or so.  You could drink your way to the table (line ran around 2 sides of the building, bar the whole way) and never be out of handshaking distance with a bartender.  Their chili was actually pretty good.  I’ll still hit a small town (Brownwood, Plainview, etc.) Chili’s for a salad.  The last Black Eyed Pea I ate at, in Fort Worth on Hulen, was pretty awful.

  13. There’s a website called “The Fedora Lounge” that has a long and interesting thread on work boots, also worth a look if you’re considering a custom hat, cowboy or otherwise.  Personally, I despise those crepe soles on an outdoor boot-slick-perhaps fine for concrete. YMMV.  General consensus seems to be that Red Wings are fine boots but hell to break in/mold to your feet.  Also lots of discussion on sizing variations fro brand to brand.
