  1. Was reading about this yesterday and about to post about it.  Can't wait to see this.    I read somewhere the number of their combined recording credits.  I'll see if I can find it.

PSA for Austin folks:  I took my G&L semi-hollow Tele into Austin Vintage Guitars yesterday to see if I could get a more reliable output jack.  Kevin McKinney (Soulhat) was working on an old Guild but talked to me about it for a few minutes.  Then one of the other guys wandered up, asked what the issue was, took a look, figured out that the lock washer on the back side of the jack (via the switch plate) had come loose, and fixed it all up.  No new parts needed, no charge for almost 30 minutes of labor.

I felt bad so I bought a t-shirt.  Good dudes over there.

Kevin McKinney amazes me.  I saw him once with Bob Schneider.   His guitar work, as usual, was flawless.  Bob, as usual, did bunch of new songs right off the bat and Kevin didn't miss a thing.  Brand new material that hadn't been released yet, and Kevin didn't play on, and he nailed it all.  I'm pretty sure he didn't play on any of the recordings.   I have a live recording of that show and Kevin does an extended solo that almost sent me to my knees.  What a talent.

  3. I forgot Ricky was in that later rendition when Albert Lee joined.  I always wondered about their connection with that song, "Country Boy At Heart".  I knew it was a Skaggs song, but Albert does a killer version.   The studio version is on his 1979-80 album.

    Yeah. Just has it all.

And that rhythm section with Daryl Johnson and Brady Blade ain’t bad….. Mmmmmmmmmaple natural stain Yamaha recording custom drums.

Brady had quit playing professionally until Emmylou and Steve Earle convinced him to tour with each of them.   I was waiting in line to get in to see Spyboy and Brady came cruising down the sidewalk.  This venue is in a part of Atlanta with a ton of homeless people and trust fund 'artists' and jam band fans.  Brady was carrying a plastic grocery bag and resembling Crackhead Clevon Little.  He was starting to grow dreads and he was dressed like he had been on a bus all day....or under a bridge.  I noticed people trying not to make eye contact with this 'homeless beggar' about to hit up everyone in line for some money.   I walked towards him and shook his hand and he spoke to me for about 3 minutes then continued down the street.   Got back in line and it was deathly quiet.  I wonder if anyone recognized him when he went on stage.

  5. Found this picture on the Swart site.   That is his living room where he records the majority of this stuff.   He was in his 40s before he started getting the credit he deserved, thanks mostly to Emmylou and Steve Earle.

  6. I have been a HUGE Buddy Miller fan since the late 90s.  Dude is a PHENOMINAL guitar player, GREAT country singer, songwriter, producer and all around great guy.   I've been lucky to him with Emmylou, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Patty Griffin, solo and with Julie.

This article goes in to a lot about his gear which I thought this crowd would enjoy.   Especially his $50 Wondre guitars.  In the article, he talks about not playing fast as much anymore.

Here is what he sounded like in 1996.  I was lucky enough to see this incarnation of Spyboy.....maybe the greatest trio ever assembled.  A balls-to-the-wall, full on rock-n-roll band.

Saw them in '07 at the Congress Theater in Chicago with a good friend who passed away two years later. Shane was a drunken mumbling marble-mouthed mess. But he nailed the vocals. It was fucking awesome. I'm so goddamn happy I got to see them live, and will always cherish that memory. Listened to all of Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace of God yesterday. RIP to an absolute legend.

Steve Earle is absolutely bonkers coked up in that interview. Hilarious.

Yep.  That song was on Copperhead Road, when he was just really getting started on his downhill side.  A year and half later, when he released "The Hard Way", he was essentially a dead man walking.

I haven't played it out yet.  I'm still playing around with the arrangements of the pedals.  It is quite heavy.  I do like how all the cords can be tucked underneath for a very clean look.

Are you zip tying them down or using velcro?  The two things I liked was the holes to run the cables and the elevated deck.

Joe Mojica.  He was driving a car I had loaned him and both he and his beautiful little girl perished in the accident.

Crap.  I never knew you loaned him that car.

  10. Yep.  That is generally what I do.  My other smaller board is a Nano+ as well.   That bicycle chain is DEFINITELY more work that I would ever put in to this.

My holey board was this model.   I thought it was be a great idea.  I hated the thing.

  11. My father-in-law was a mail carrier after WWII.    Old style, walking mailman, delivering mail to houses in Omaha, NE.   He apparently instilled the need for my wife to IMMEDIATELY get the mail from the mailbox.  Our house could be on fire, a tornado coming, her arm lopped off in a freak chainsaw accident, and have a kid chocking from swallowing a lego piece, and she would stop and check the mailbox.  No matter how late she is running, or where she needs to be, she will check the mailbox.

Then, she brings an envelope to me, points at the return address and says, "What is in this envelop?"  Same for packages.  Get it from the front porch, bring it so me and say, "What's in here?"  YEARS of me saying, "I don't know, but I have an idea.  Let's open it and find out"?    Still, every time..."What's in here?"

    reminds me of a joke,

Man: "The doctor said I can masterbate whenever I want!"

Wife: "No he didn't, he said you could have a stroke at any time"

Reminds me of Willie's joke.   "Doctor to me I had to stop masturbating.    But Doc....why??   I'm trying to examine you."
