Headed to England next April to catch a few soccer matches.  Will be there for 8-9 days and will absolutely be in Newcastle for two days (soccer).  Any recommendations on smaller (sub 250k) cities/towns to visit?  No particular focus of this trip other than watching National League/EFL soccer live and drinking in pubs.

I enjoyed Liverpool a lot. We stayed somewhere close to Matthew Street and it was a fun area where everything was walking distance.

It seems anywhere outside of London, the people enjoy Americans way more. People enjoyed the novelty of hanging out with us and hearing our accents.

I ended up fucking a girl from Mansfield quite a bit my freshman year. She just grabbed me after class one day and stopped me, asked me if I was following the course well enough and needed a study partner.

Well, the truth was that it was Biology for non-science, so of course I was crushing it. But this poor hot girl from Mansfield and staying in Scottish Rite as a freshman needed help, so I helped. I think I violated Scottish Rite more in that next 4-6 months than the Brits during Prima Noctae.

Anyway, outside of a few folks, like I think Childs, I haven’t thought much about Mansfield in a long, long time. Good on you, @texifornia , critical shit.

You know who's from Mansfield that you've definitely thought about?

  3. I don't think the issue is the direction we ran the ball.  The issue is running the exact same toss play we ran on a previous 3rd down earlier in the game but running it against a loaded box that gave the play zero chance of working pre snap.

He was scared of Quinn losing the game and basically said as much about the 4rh quarter red zone play calling in the post game press conference.  I might actually be fine with that. But he could have given Ewers an easy play action pass.

McVay and the Rams did the same thing Sark did yesterday and it cost them the gave. Thankfully it didn't cost us one.

  4. Ford did a good job looking back and finding the receiver before his redzone pick. However, I feel like too often our linebackers disappear when they drop into coverage. Particularly against ISU.

  5. Watts loss was huge and it's pretty clear the young guys at corner aren't ready.

I've seen us lose games like this for far too long for me to not be happy right now.  8-4 is probably the most likely scenario but I can see the team getting up for Oklahoma State and pulling something crazy off.

  6. Starting to think the QB slide should just be taken out of the game. It doesn't protect anyone; it only makes it more likely someone going full speed will destroy the back of your head against the turf.

Either find some other way for the QB to give themselves up or just say get tackled like everyone else.

Incomplete pass on 3rd down on the first drive.

Incomplete pass on 3rd down on the third drive.

Interception on 3rd down in the 3rd quarter.

I'm picking nits here. Offense is amazing. Just saying on some obvious passing downs, there were some plays that weren't pretty.

Nevermind. The first one was complete but a bad check down short of the first down.

OU tried the drop 8 against Texas this past weekend. Ewers, Whittington, and Sanders destroyed it. Those 3 guys didn't play against ISU last year. Good luck ISU. Oh yeah, we are also getting Billingsley back.

I will say when we got to 3rd and long and there was no threat of the run, we didn't look amazing against it.

  10. This is the most talented offense we've had since 2008.  There are at least 5 future day 1 or day 2 draft picks starting right now.  I think I saw that the offense is 1st in the country in yards per play when Ewers is in.

So I do not give any shits about Iowa State holding Kansas schools below 20.

  11. I hate to compliment him, but Riley was an offensive genius and the best QB recruiter in the nation. It sucked going up against him, and we were at a disadvantage every year we faced him because of those two things.

It's possible his talent prevented a decline that should have already started.  But it's difficult to compare OU's collapse to other programs:

Nebraska - incremental decline. They went from firing coaches that won national championships to firing coaches that won 9 games every year to firing coaches that sucked.

Florida State - Old coach lost it. Then new coach who wins a title initiates the decline.

Texas - Old coach lost it. New hires can't replace it.

Miami - Coach who wins a championship also initiates the decline. Lost its national image to the point where the brand they're known for only exists in documentaries.

USC - Begin to maybe fall off  a little and coach bolts for NFL.

USC is the closest one I can think of. And OU doesn't have the same advantages USC has to make their down period somewhat moderate.

Injury update from Drumm on 247

      Hide contents

*** One, I know you all want to know about DG and his availability, but that’s something we won’t touch out of respect for sources that have spoken to us.

As fans, I’d assume you all would be okay with that if that’s how OU wants this handled. There is no hunting one way or another from me or Parker coming, either.

Everyone will know come about 9-10am Saturday, or if someone wants to leak it. It won’t be from us, though.

*** That said, it sounds like OL Wanya Morris health has improved a ton, and there is some confidence that he will play.

Not to get your hopes up, but I expect Morris to be out there vs Texas. Just going off what I have heard.

*** We have talked about and reported earlier this week that RB Marcus Major will be back this week. Major battled an ankle injury last week and didn’t travel to TCU. He has healed a lot over the last 14 days and is expected to rotate with Eric Gray(he is good to go) and Jovantae Barnes on Saturday.

*** We also reported that DE Ethan Downs is okay will be full-go this Saturday. He missed the second half of TCU game after a scare where they thought he may have bruised his spleen. Luckily, it was deep bruise to ribs.

Downs played on it for a few snaps and when trainers checked him, they held him out for precautionary reasons.

Good news is he will be back.

*** Freshman DE R Mason Thomas is expected back after a hamstring issue for a few weeks. Thomas was a force rushing the passer before the injury, so it should be intriguing to see how his arrival back makes a difference — if at all.

*** On Billy Bowman, see the DG update and know that we have tread lightly on reporting it he will play or not.

*** I hear Theo Wease is okay after a scare. If anyone deserved a break, it is the JR wideout.

*** Basically, I’ve heard that most of the players banged up should be back or close to ot/game time decision.

So basically they will tell their readers which ones are playing, but they won't report which ones aren't playing. Very smart. Impossible to crack that code.

  13. I met Patterson at a TCU coaches clinic a few years ago.  He made a joke about wishing he could just focus on X's and O's and wouldn't that be the dream to just coach defense.  It was in the context of dealing with recruiting and all that comes with running a program.

I'd imagine he's quite happy right now.  Even being a DC somewhere would require him to go kiss up to 17 year old kids and their parents. Patterson is a pretty awkward dude. I'm sure he sees never having to do a home visit the way a college graduate sees never having to take a final exam again.

  14. Hutson gave up 2 sacks already. Jones already gave up a sack and looked rough on a few other pass plays.  I'm actually less worried about Banks against Bama than I am the right side of the line.  Banks looked solid although there were some run plays he looked a little lost and didn't touch anyone.

The positives from game 1 (playmaking TE for the first time in forever, Overshown looking his best, Sorrell providing a rush, Banks, DBs looking pretty good) far outweigh the negatives.

But the Angilau injury and Cam Williams not being ready to replace Jones are going to be huge against Bama.
