So that 2015 draft....pretty pretty pretty good

Plus we got Daz Cameron in that draft, a key component in the Verlander trade...(I was excited about Daz and was sorry to see him go, but it was the right move.)

There's a lot of gold in here, but I think my favorite is the part about how Jimbo is even more dangerous in the SEC than he was in the ACC - because there is better competition in the SEC. What?

But the general theme of the this time we are getting the recruits and we'll realize our potential is strongly reminiscent of the short-lived #wrts offseasons. Not that I'm surprised that the aggys didn't learn from the past. (And yes, I am assuming this is actually an aggy author.)

Much preferred 2012-2014 when it was clear that we had a plan and were actively increasing talent in the system, than 2008-2010 when we were adrfit and merely trying to stave off the inevitable.  The Rangers have pissed away most of their valuable trade pieces and yet have a farm system that isn't anywhere as good as Houston's in spite of the moves Luhnow has been making since 2015 to acquire MLB ready talent at the expense of the farm.  Even if Houston's MLB team was as bereft of talent as the Rangers', the Astros would still be better positioned to win in the future by virtue of the depth of their farm.  Still, I don't think JD is a bad GM (he did what he had to do with those trades and things just didn't work out), but Luhnow and his team are in a whole other league.

Absolutely. 2008 was the last hurrah of the Berkman/Oswalt teams, and the writing was on the wall in 2009. The 09-10 years were had no greater chance of winning anything of significance than the 12-14 teams, and they didn't seem to have any sort of plan at all. I argued vehemently in favor of a complete rebuild. People bitch about "tanking" but the club had no choice - we were in the unique position of having a bad (and relatively expensive) major league roster and a terrible farm system.

People who bitch about "tanking" seem to think that there is something noble about spending money foolishly on players who won't really help much (see: Lee, Carlos).

So...on par with Miss St, Auburn, South Carolina, Mizzou and Ole Miss.

Yeah, that sounds about right. The meaty part of the bell curve is where they've always belonged.

What the ever-loving shit is this asshole trying to say?

UT will suffer because it is located in one of the fastest-growing and most popular urban areas in the US? And the "shrinking of rural communities" trend will benefit aggy?

What is the purported causal mechanism here?

Oh, and "SEC ready" always makes me chuckle when their best season ever was with players selected to play big 12 ball.

Exactly. You would think they'd be self-aware enough to hold off on the unironic "SEC ready" drivel until they field a team of guys who voluntarily chose an SEC school to do something on the field.

    But, it's aggy, so...

  7. In case anyone is interested...I try to update this on monday mornings...updated stats for selected Astros minor leaguers...generally these guys are/have been regarded as the top handful of prospects in the organization. I also add some to the list who are just interesting.

Where are the bitches on this thread who wanted to DFA Oso Blanco at the beginning of the season. Same idiots who wanted to bump Springer down before the start of the WS. Oso is my homeboy.

I was - posted about it right before he went on this tear. I came back on here and made fun of myself like two weeks ago. I will also point out that I bitched relentlessly about Marwin, though I never felt he should be DFA'd, just that he shouldn't have been playing every day and batting in the middle of the order. He's been really good since then too.

I have never wanted Springer handled any differently than he has been.

Oh, and I hate Giles unapologetically. I have pretty much since we acquired him.

  9. I don't have a particularly interesting story, but the thing I remember most about the game - and the whole thing was a bit of a blur, but I swear this happened - was on the 4th-down stop...it felt like an eternity for the refs to get the chain out there and measure. So I'm watching the screen at the Rose Bowl, and when they were extending the chain, they sort of paused just for a second before they straightened the entire thing out, such that it looked like they had made it...I was actually in the middle of yelling "GODDAMNIT!" and then they extended the thing all the way and jubilation ensued.

I remember that more than anything else. That and not wanting to leave.

  10. Seth Beer has played his first few games in low-A ball. Not sure what to make of him, but have some optimism that he could be a useful bat down the road at first or DH...I think Yuli and Gattis contracts are up after 2019, which should be about the time Beer is ready...

edit: nope, Yuli signed through 2020

Jesus. In the 8 years Fisher was at FSU he went 4-4 vs Clemson and Dabo and three of those four years he had a Heisman Quarterback and aggy thinks that Jimbo is just going to walk into A&M and turn around and beat Clemson with a quarter of the talent he had at FSU? The more I learn about Jimbo and his time at FSU the more I am convinced he is just a shittier version of Mack Brown.

Yeah but what you're failing to consider here is that the Astros won the world series last year, beating the Yankees and Red Sox in the process.

Gundy now has two options if he wants to maintain his dignity/man card: (1) tell the regents that he's leaving if they don't fire the AD before the season starts; or (2) leave next season if the AD isn't fired before the season starts.  He''s the biggest pussy in the world if he just ignores this.

Gundy is a hell of a coach.  Any school would be lucky to have him.  This fuckwad Holder sounds like aggy through and through...just doesn't know his, or his school's, place in the word.

I've always thought that there must be some interesting dynamics when certain coaches, who are are nearly irreplaceable, "report" to an AD who is more easily replaceable. This situation is definitely not the norm, but does anyone really think that Saban is subordinate to his AD, for example? Gundy isn't Saban, but who do they think they could get that would be better than Gundy? I think most of their fans realize this too.

The bullpen won't last. Servais is wearing them out.

This came up in Jay Jaffe's chat this week on Fangraphs:

Nick: Is there a measurable skill involved with winning a ton of one-run games like the Mariners or is it 100% pure dumb luck?

    12:35
Jay Jaffe: I wrote about this the other day. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-al-west-and-one-run-success/. Significant correlation regarding bullpen WAR and 1-run success, and I think there was a 2013 study that suggested team BB, K (both pitching) and ISO (hitting) had some connection.

In short, some team charactersitics may make them a bit more likely to perform better than average in tight games; however, I saw another stat that Seatlle's hitting in clutch/leverage situations thus far has far exceeded its performance in other situations. That doesn't seem like a "skill" - that seems like it is bound to even out.

Goddamnit Keuchel. After last shitty start, you talk about how "this isn't what a 3-8 pitcher looks like" or some dumb shit. After this shitty start, you say that 11 of the 13 fucking hits you allowed in 4.1 IP should have been outs."

Once again...just shut the fuck up. Please. Shut the fuck up about your displeasure at the trade deadline. Shut the fuck up about the Cubs. Shut the fuck up about how your shitty starts aren't your fault. Shut up.
