That one already roared thru at 45mph.

Don't worry, we're supposed to get 6 more inches of snow Monday.

We'll have more snow in April than January and December combined if that happens.  NO CR, but seriously, how do people think this is normal?

I can't speak for ISU, but I do know that both Texas & Oklahoma have played schools from the PAC more than any other schools from any other conference, so there is a bit of a history there in that respects... But honestly, in no way do I want to see a day where ISU isn't in the same conference, as the P5, the fans are amazing and the fact that it's an AAU school adds a feather for the XII... It sucks that it's even gotten to this point where we wonder who would get left out...

In my "best of both worlds" merger the XII has: Iowa State/ Kansas/ Oklahoma/ Oklahoma State/ TCU/ Texas/ Texas Tech

    While the other half, the PAC has: Washington/ Oregon/ Stanford/ California/ USC/ UCLA/ Arizona/ Arizona State/ Colorado

The other possibility is just a simple joint network between the 2 leagues, allowing current members to remain as is, with annual cross conference games in the non-conference...

I appreciate the sentiment, but I still think a merger is stupid.  I could see working together as media partners like you mention, but the leagues should stay separate and play their current set ups.  That's the best way to continue to foster fan interest over the long term.

I don't think any current P5 school is at danger of getting kicked out, unfortunately even Baylor.

  3. The Pac merger is stupid.  I want no part of it.  I know you like making the graphics, and that's fine, but Jesus Christ the last thing college football needs is more conferences that span half the width of the country and feature schools with zero history or shared culture.  Blech.

I think that we had it wrong all along and are just now realizing it.  I know I thought that the PAC was a better place for Tech but I now realize that I was wrong.  The Big 12 was better then because the average of the individual football programs was better.  And it still is, even with the current membership.  It just took a few guys doing the math and realizing that while the PAC 10 was more stable, it was not as profitable.  Or at least that's the way I see it

And at this point, I think stability's a wash.  I just don't see any of the current schools/administrations being all that unsatisfied with their affiliation.

    Except the guys on LandThieves.

This and the improvement of programs like TCU and OSU.  I know I'm biased but BIG12 football style of play is the best all around.

I think it's the most entertaining league in the country, if only because of Round Robin play.  Every school plays each other every year.  I know I give way more of a damn about the Texas schools now that we've been playing every year for awhile, and every game has implications.  It makes the basketball side of things better too.

Monday Morning Podcast is one of the best out there. His stream of consciousness is outstanding.

Agreed.  I haven't missed an episode since 2015, except for some of the guest ones.  He's just not a good interviewer.  He's great as a guest on other podcasts, and great on his own, but not when he's leading the charge with someone else.

I think the funniest podcast he was a part of was the time he and Tom Segura were on Bert Kreischer's podcast.  Might have been late 2016 or so.  Segura tells a story about a chick getting gangbanged by the Wu-Tang Clan.  Some of the funniest shit I've ever heard.  Also great from that time period was The End of the World Podcast the night of the 2016 Election.  Burr, Stanhope, Rogan, Kreischer, Stanhope's whole crew, probably some others.  Burr was on fire.

After the dust settled from the last round of big moves, it has become very clear that the PAC 10 needed the Texhoma Four much worse than the Texhoma Four needed the PAC 10.

I honestly believe that if the PAC could get KSU and ISU, they would significantly upgrade the viewership and interest in their football conference.  Not that it is going to happen, but those two programs are better than the median of a PAC 12 program in value

We certainly have more engaged fanbases than all but a handful of Pac 12 schools.

Honestly, if the Pac 12 showed up tomorrow and asked ISU and KSU to join a Pac 14, we'd be foolish to join.  That's not going to happen, but the relative of health of the two conferences seems to have gone in different directions since the attempted raid/merger.

I have switched bourbon to my primary means of alcohol at home. It's for a few reasons, it's a lot healthier, it takes less liquid to get drunk, it's a lot cheaper, and I just enjoy sipping it more than a carbonated drink. I'm 33 now, and health is becoming a slight concern. I don't want to have a beer gut when my metabolism starts to drop, and I don't need the extra carbs/calories. Since making the switch, I'm down about 10 pounds on my average weight, which is pretty significant for not changing anything else.

I try to do this every couple of years, for the reasons you mentioned, but I REALLY like beer.

I've started not drinking anything at all 3-4 nights a week to stave off the calories, and mixing in more macro beer if I'm in a "drink all day" (tailgating, kayaking, etc) setting.  Liquor always knocks me on my ass, so the situations where I would drink liquor responsibly are the situations where I just don't drink at all anymore.

Maybe one of these days I'll crack that code.  We're blessed with some good localish bourbon in this area.

Exactly where I'm at with him.  I won't miss a note when he's opening for TT, but I don't listen to his albums much.

    Also, these are great:

In all seriousness, Big 12 seems more stable, no? When the contracts come up , they should get a comparable contract to the ACC?  As much as I hate the conference at times, I don't want it to implode.  Easiest path to the playoff and I'm not for all the 11 pm EST kickoffs for games out west.

The Big 12 is in a better financial spot than the ACC and a significantly better financial spot than the Pac 12, which has also become complete ass in revenue sports.

I just can't see what incentive there will be for Big 12 schools to move conferences, compared to the financial gaps and butthurt that lead decision making in 2010.

UT and OU get plenty of marquee non-con games to make up for the perceived blandness of the rest of the league, and the 14 team ACC/Big10/SECs have exposed the reality that most leagues are a couple of blue bloods and a collection of also-rans.  All you do by changing conferences is start playing new also-rans who you now have zero history or familiarity with, that are on complete opposite ends of the country.

Sweet, thanks everyone. I repped what I could. I am going to stay downtown off 5th and 2nd street. I will deal with driving up to Fridley for a few days. Hopefully the weather cooperates with me.

You're not going to get snowed on or anything, but yeah, just be ready.

Not sure where you're staying,, but if you're working and staying in Fridley, you'll be driving everywhere.

April in this town is a crapshoot. The weather hasn't been good on the last weekend of April since the Clinton administration, and there's 6 inches of sloppy snow on the ground right now with more coming down.

There's a 5-8 Club on the north side of town (109th and Zane in Champlin) for their Juicy Lucy.

Second the recommendations of 1029, Brits Pub,

A brewery that also has FANTASTIC food is Urban Growler (2325 Endicott St, St. Paul). I don't get why everyone wants to go to Surly. The beer and taprooms are better at Able, Indeed, and Dangerous Man.

Al's Breakfast is the narrowest restaurant in the City of Minneapolis, and is one of the legendary dining establishments of the Big Ten Conference. Open 6 AM-noon. Great pancakes.

Surly is definitely overrated, but it's a striking facility with good beer.  I've been 5-6 times and that's enough for the rest of my life probably, but it's a cool place on your first visit.

Al's is easily the narrowest restaurant I've ever been in.

I did really enjoy Rayon Vert, but as BC mentioned, they haven’t made it in years.

I do think the large national craft brands are going to continue to struggle; too much local competition.

I think this pretty much nails it:

In 2017, 60 percent of the craft category’s total growth was from microbreweries and another 16 percent was from brewpubs, according to the Brewers Association. About 6,300 breweries are now operating across the country.

National brands that maintain excellent quality will be fine.

I live in an area pretty inundated with excellent local craft beer and Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas remain fixtures in my fridge.

GF/Alpine have been a major step down for awhile to my palate

ISU, I think I did send you some Alpine when it was still Alpine and you weren't nuts for it. That was a head scratcher for me, but Ive never gotten the hype behind Surly, or LP's Yellow Rose for that matter, so guess we all have out expectations. I still fondly recall that Toppling Golliath you sent.

The beers that stick most in my mind from our trades were the RR sours and the Pizza Port IPAs.  Those were all spectacular.

Honestly, I can see where someone would be underwhelmed with Surly.  I think the quality of their distro products has slipped a little since they built the new mega brewhouse too.

We'll maybe have to fire the ol' trade machine up again.  TG has built a new brewhouse and making better hops than ever on that system.

  14. Pretty sure I'll be seeing them with Old 97's, Shooter Jennings, and the Bottle Rockets in Mankato, MN this summer.  Fucking stoked for that show!

"A Long Ways From Your Heart" was my favorite album of 2017.  "Turnpike Troubadours" was my favorite of 2015.  They're maybe my favorite band going these days.  Certainly my favorite band whose members are under the age of 40.

I've seen them live 6-7 times.  Always a blast.  Because they do 80% of their shows in Texas or the Midwest, it's easy to make a couple shows a year, even living in the boonies.

Interesting sidenote/tidbit:  I'm a member of a Facebook closed group that functions as a Turnpike message board.  Last Saturday, someone posted a link from an OKC paper that shows an Evan D. Felker being named as a respondent in a divorce.  The post was then deleted.  If this is indeed the same Evan Felker, I have a feeling their best work is yet to come.

    https://thefullpint.com/beer-news/green-flash-brewing-inc-foreclosed-sells-green-flash-and-alpine-assets/

San Diego, CA) – As a conclusion to Green Flash Brewing ending their national expansion strategy, closing Virginia Beach and Cellar 3, we have just learned that Green Flash Brewing, Inc.’s largest shareholder, Comerica Bank has foreclosed on it’s loans due to outstanding debt and poor business health and that Green Flash and Alpine assets have been sold to a risk management company in Michigan named WCIPA, LLC. We are still trying to learn more about this company. Here is the official memo that Green Flash President and CEO Mike Hinkley sent to over 100 shareholders this morning.

    “Dear GFBC, Inc. Shareholders,

On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors of GFBC, Inc. (the “Company”), I am truly sorry to report that the Company’s senior lender, Comerica Bank, has foreclosed on its loans and sold the assets of the Company (other than the Virginia Beach brewery) to WC IPA LLC through a foreclosure sale which closed on March 30, 2018. As such, the Company no longer owns the Green Flash and Alpine businesses. Comerica Bank is currently conducting a separate process to sell the Virginia Beach brewery.

After a general slowdown in the craft beer industry, coupled with intense competition and a slowdown of our business, we could not service the debt that we took on to build the Virginia Beach brewery — and in early 2018, the Company defaulted on its loans with Comerica Bank. While we took substantial efforts to recapitalize the Company over the past several months, both before and after the bank default, we were ultimately unable to close a transaction.

While the Green Flash and Alpine brands will continue, they will do so under new ownership — and GFBC, Inc. and Alpine Beer Company, Inc. will be wound down and dissolved. I sincerely thank you for your support over the years.

    Sincerely,
    Mike Hinkley
    CEO
    GFBC, Inc.”

I have never understood the hype around Green Flash or Alpine.  I couldn't care less if I drank another beer from them ever again.

Winter storms in the beginning of April...followed by a week of temps around 30 so zero melting happens.

The improper use of the word "literally"

People who beat you to a 4 way stop, and then insist you go first

People who go to breweries and order beer not made there

  17. New distillery called Rockfilter opened about 30 minutes down the road from me in Spring Grove, MN last fall.  Making some really great stuff.  The distiller also grows all the grain used (corn, oats, sorghum, rye) within a 10 mile radius of the distillery.  If you ever find yourself at the nexus of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, it's worth your stop.

    ZNZVcQc.jpg

Went up last Friday, as my wife's boss plays in a blues band that was doing a show there.  Good stuff as usual.  Due to the crowd volume, they were doing cocktails.  I ordered a smoked Bloody Mary, which was ridiculously good.  Had never tried that with bourbon.

    A9B6Cwe.jpg

The food truck was damn good too.  A Spring Grove native had been living and working in Austin for the past decade, and had learned the Centex BBQ style.  He's taken the methods he learned there and applied it to proper cornfed Midwestern pork and beef.  A stellar match.  The good stuff was sold out by the time I got hungry, but the chopped brisket and pulled pork sandwiches were solid as hell.
