  1. Cheering against your school is bush league.  I rooted for both Iowa and ISU growing up (had a parent attend each), and dropped that Hawkeye shit about 10 minutes after I got on campus.

I remember this kid who lived in my dorm at ISU.  Draped himself from head to toe in Iowa gear, every single day.  He was also, always, alone.  Ate lunch alone.  Never went to parties.  Sat by himself on the campus bus.

You make that bed, you sleep in it.

Our cyclonic friend is correct; in terms of traditional venues, Jack Trice is one of the best stadiums in America. I wouldn't trade it for DKR, of course, but classic grass field in a stadium with a lot of cultural history is nothing to sneeze at.

Honestly, it was a very cookie cutter stadium initially.  We've really improved it, and the history of the Jack Trice story is powerful.

Our presss box is still oddly small.  But that playing surface is tits.

    Stunningly insightful response.

I'm well aware that that natural turf is more aesthetically pleasing than any kind of artificial surface.

But pithy replies aside, I am pretty sure that the reason modern FieldTurf is used practically everywhere at this point is because it creates a more consistent playing surface that doesn't deteriorate as the season progresses, particularly in colder climates.

I was referring to leaving us off the natural grass list.  We've been artificial turf free since 1995, and won the award for best natural playing surface in the country recently.

I was just breaking your balls.  You're my boy, Blue.

Mother’s Day should not be for wives. Husbands shouldn’t have to get a gift for their wife even if they are mother to their kids.

    Same goes for Fathers Day.

I think everyone secretly agrees with this

I thought I read somewhere that the new, modern Field Turf is a far cry from the olden days of shitty AstroTurf and was actually a better and more consistent playing surface than real turf.... and that's why practically everyone uses it.

Aren't OU and TCU the only two stadiums in the conference with real turf at this point?

    Bitch, please.

  6. Jack Trice - Iowa State.  Massively improved venue, raucous home crowds, wild tailgate scene.  I'm biased as shit.

Kinnick - Iowa.  Really cool old stadium wedged into a residential neighborhood.  Iowa fans party too.

UNI Dome - Northern Iowa.  FCS football indoors.  It was fine, with that factored in.

Elwood Olsen - Morningside.  NAIA.  My cousin played here.  Half my family go at drunk in the parking lot before his final game, and basically brought a liter of whiskey into the game to keep warm.  Pretty little stadium, and a good time.

TCF Bank - Minnesota.  Beautiful facility, shit tailgating, lame fanbase, but Grain Belt on tap.

Maxwell Field - Winona State.  DII, drank in Stadium out of flask.  Sold out and rowdy.  Stood on the edge of the end zone in unofficial student section.

Memorial - Nebraska.  Great venue, shit tailgating, shit fans.

Faurot Field - Mizzou.  the definition of average in all aspects.

Bill Snyder Family - Kansas State.  Passionate fans, facility has improved dramatically since my first visit.  Very good tailgate scene.  Slightly more reserved version of ISU.

Memorial - Kansas.  A dump, but in the cool old way.  Surprisingly fun game day scene.  Good mix of weird residential area bars and front yard tailgates.  Fans much cooler than basketball season.

Boone Pickens - Oklahoma State.  Concourse areas surprisingly felt cheap.  Everything else was great.  Fantastic fans (very similar to us and KSU).  Tailgating a little hampered due to lay out.

Amon G. Carter - TCU.  Beautiful facility.  Solid tailgate.  Fanbase a little disinterested, but universally friendly.

Floyd Casey - Baylor.  Irredeemable and terrible.  Worst facility, fanbase, and town on the list.

Darrell K Royal - Texas.  Massive.  Fans were awesome.  Tailgate scene was spread out and inconveniet, but very fun.

Kyle Field - Aggy.  Pre SEC.  Odd layout, and dingy.  Tailgate was fun.  Aggy fans were fun in one on one interactions.  All that went out the window inside stadium.  The cult is something else.  It has to be observed to be believed.

Infocision Stadium - Akron.  Shockingly nice facility.  Really not much of a fanbase to speak of.  Most of them rooted for other schools.  Fun little tailgate area.  Exceeded expectations.

Mountaineer Field - West Virginia.  Fucking wild.  Incredible fans.  Coonskin hats, moonshine, weed.  What else you want?  Great tailgate.  Stadium is a crappier Jack Trice.

I know we don't like his interviews, but I really liked this one with Bill Hader:

Agreed.  I usually skip his interviews, but this was solid.

I've found that with Burr's interviews, as long as I like the guest, I like the interview.

  8. If Herman can keep Orlando and add Holgs as OC, Texas would actually be back.  That would be one hell of a staff.

I might bet us to take the over.  Take care of business against clearly inferior teams, and get two toss ups and there's 7.  I have OU and WVU as toss ups because those games are in Ames.  I'd expect to lose on the road.  I really don't think Texas is that much better than us, but Herman has pretty thoroughly controlled Campbell thus far, and the game's in Austin.  I assume Texas will also be better than last year.  I would have OK State in the win column if it weren't in Stillwater.

Sure wins (5):  South Dakota State, Akron, Baylor, @Kansas, Tech

Toss Ups (5):  @Iowa, KSU, WVU, @OK State, OU

    Likely loss (2) , @Texas, @TCU

in 2011 during sxsw i saw jason isbell and trampled by turtles at swan dive. there were about 30 people there. they are too jamgrass for my taste but it was a good show.

The new album is far less jamgrass-y than the stuff they were doing back then.

Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600's to trade with the Native Americans. "Milwaukee" is an Indian name. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land.

Did you know that Milwaukee is the only major American city to elect four Socialist mayors?

  11. Kayaks navigate tight turns much easier than canoes do.  I'm a pretty experience canoer, but have dumped plenty when with inexperienced people, or during some higher water situations.  If a kayak gets thrown into a log, it's much more likely to just bounce off it.  I've never tipped my kayak.

Also, when you tip your canoe, you're probably going to lose some beer, and that sucks.

I like both, but lean kayak when water is too high or too low.

Disagree. The last DMW album is my favorite thing he’s done.

    Agreed.

I saw DMW 6-7 years ago (after the first album) and they were a blast.  Granted, it was in Minnesota, so they were laying it all out there for the "home crowd" so to speak.

I'm still really liking this new TBT as well.

Well, the bike is no doubt a lot heavier than your road bike, and possibly more importantly the wheels have a shit ton more rolling resistance, both friction and inertial, so yeah it can be hard.  Also, if you aren't aware, you typically need to lean forward significantly on any mtb to keep the front wheel down while climbing.  You learn not to bleed speed on an mtb when approaching a climb.  And, you are more likely to encounter significantly steeper grades on a trail than on any road that has been paved, or even graveled (if anyone is paying that much attention to it, it has been graded down).

It's rather amazing, to me, how much different the cardio and energy requirements of mtb are from road biking.  Road biking really doesn't prepare you for it unless you do sprint intervals on the regular.  And the combo of coming out of something technical with your adrenaline pumping and having to do a lungbuster climb is something else.

I've struggled with the flip of this equation, IE dropping into something technical that demands all of your faculties with your lungs about to burst from the climb you just did/attempted.

Appreciate the advice.  I've played with leaning more into the climb, but that just turns into me standing on my pedals, completely off seat, which doesn't get me very far either.

I definitely struggle with timing my gear down to capture as much momentum going into the climb, without being in an impossible gear.

  14. I've gotten a couple of rides in on my fat bike so far, mostly single track.

Is it normal not to be able to climb steep, sustained pitches?  I live on the edge of a very hilly area, and that's where all the trails are at.  I ride road bike in that area, and chew up any paved hill I've ever come across.  I can't think of a single time I've had to walk my road bike up a hill.  However, on single track, when I hit anything very steep, I quickly become able to keep pedaling, even in my lowest gear and my feet going flying off the pedals, or my front end starts coming up.  It seems like I can hardly climb anything with my fat bike, at least on single track.  I haven't had any trouble at all on gravel/crushed lime stone.

Am I just a pussy, or is this typical for starting out?

  15. I went to our first game there in 2012.  It was fun, and the TCU fans were fine, even though we beat them soundly.

I had reservations about a religious university in Texas after my horrific visit to Baylor, but I had a good time.

I don't think it was a league-generated thing.  I think it was a particular crew that has a natural bent against Texas.  The bullshit penalties started early because the guys on the crew couldn't be unbiased with UT on the field if their lives depended on it.

There seems to be a snowball effect of them upping the ante as the game went on as well.

  17. From watching the clip of that 2015 OSU game, I don't think it was rigged at the start.

I think what happened is that somewhere during the course of the game, the crew got pissed at either the Texas coaching staff, or fans, and went rogue.  They were definitely incompetent and just cracked on the Ford hold.  They doubled down on their rage with the Charlie Strong 15 yarder, and that cemented it.

It was clearly biased, intentionally damaging officiating, but I don't see any motive for this to have been some pre-emptive league ordered deal.  I think it's something that developed over the course of the game.
