That's fine.  Then make that decision initially instead of handing his attorney millions of dollars in leverage by first deciding the appropriate punishment was a 2 week suspension that cost Fitz ~ $100K compared to a termination 48 hours later with presumably the exact same information that cost Fitz $42MM.

And naturally the reputational damage of having this thing remain in the headlines is worth a lot more than whatever Fitzgerald will settle for. So he’ll get $15 million, an 18 month vacation, and everyone in the AD and university administration will get their scheduled 12% raise and 7 weeks off.

  2. AirBNB has turned into a pretty shitty experience in a lot of cases. A lot of hosts treat you like children with curfews, quiet hours, and chores before you leave. An oh yeah, it is now more expensive than a hotel. I rent through BNB/VRBO if I want to be in a house (or I’m staying in a place where there are no hotels) but if I’m going to Austin/Phoenix/Nashville etc. I will stay on a hotel 100 times out of 100.

    edit:

And there’s a not-insignificant chance your host is voyeuristically watching your every move via security cameras the whole time you’re there.

  3. Whether the coup is successful or not is almost irrelevant. Putin and his propaganda arm can no longer say “everything is going according to plan”. This is a massive fuckup and embarrassment for the ruling class in Russia. And a lot of resources are going to be redirected from Ukraine to the interior of Russia in response.

The walls supposedly were heated (for as long as the batteries held out).  The switch to turn on the heat likely was on the outside of the sub, if I had to guess based on the other design "features."

I wouldn’t rule out the heating system getting a little too ambitious and the thing turning into an oven for the same reason.

In the “survived and sunk to the bottom” case I read another nightmare to consider in the Reddit thread. We all envision that they sunk and landed horizontally like we see in all the photos. But it’s just as likely they they settled vertically and are standing face to face as they contemplate their fate. Hopefully shitter end down…

If you look at the video in this Reddit post, it looks like there is no ‘hatch’…the whole thing cracks open just before the foreskin.  Pretty sure they just bolt it shut from the outside.

    Some gold from that thread:

We have no clue what happened to this submersible. Most of the comments about it are either pointing out an engineering peculiarity (like the game controller, makeshift nature of the submersible), or saying it's just rich people so who cares?

What I want to know is why aren't we considering the possibility that a massive creature attacked a deep-sea submersible, leaving it disabled and trapping the crew at the bottom of the Atlantic? With time running out, a visionary oceanographer could recruit rescue diver Jason Statham to save the crew and the sea itself from an unimaginable threat -- a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon.

  6. Heard an interview on NPR with a CBS journalist who actually rode in the submersible last year with the plan to go down to the Titanic. Unsurprisingly, the trip was cut short after a mechanical issue a few hundred feet down. A couple of high points:

    - He said before you go down you basically sign away your life. No chance that the victims or their families are compensated. And even if they were supposed to, with what assets? I imagine OceanGate’s IP and goodwill are not trading very high right now.

    - The vessel apparently has seven different systems that are meant to return it to the surface even after a total loss of power or control from inside. One of them is sandbags that are attached by something that dissolves after a certain amount of time under water. So this guy speculated that the ship may have returned to surface and they’re being tossed around in 6 ft seas. Also, the vessel is white and the ocean is full of white caps in that area. Zero chance they’re spotted from the air.
    - The hatch is sealed with 18 bolts from the outside. Yeah…

If I'm spending any decent sum of money (decent in my view, or $250,000 if I was rich) to be stuck in a confined space with 4 or 5 other people for 16 hours or more, they better be cheerleaders.

  8. I’m sure prospective IPO investors are thrilled to find that the site’s largest communities can be shut down or turned NSFW at the whims of unpaid, non-employed moderators. CEO really should have thought this one through a little harder.

I'm relaxed, dude. I just curse a lot. I was simply commenting that your faults/opinions on the marriage/divorce dynamic in the US don't limit your exposure for foreign brides unless you're never coming back here. That's it.

But seriously, you do bring up a good point. A lot of guys who think they can just recruit a servant/sex slave/mother figure and bring a mail order bride (or equivalent) back to the US end up divorced and alone as soon as their bride gains full citizenship. Which is, in a way, poetic justice.

I'm aware you never said you did or intended to do what those guys did. Which is why I fucking pointed out that the exposure in the system is the same for foreigners versus American women if you ever intend to return to America.

Yes, the benefits of the US passport aren't limited to living here...but are you seriously telling me you think a vast majority of the women who are from countries that are half as restricted in regards to visas and whatnot as you say...DON'T want to live in America? Come on, man.

Relax man. It’s a message board. If I knew I was going to be required to state the intention of every US man and foreign woman who get married I wouldn’t have quoted your reply.

Yeah, dude, I read it and comprehended it just fine. Which is why I specifically referenced in MY post later "unless YOU never intent to return to the US." Yes, that's what those guys did. And if your plan is to never return to the US, well ok. Otherwise, you're just as exposed.

I never said that I did, or intended to do, what these guys did. I merely stated another perspective of US men going overseas and finding a wife. It’s not all “passport bros”.

I do see how my comment around them being interested in your passport could be confusing though. One thing that we take for granted is our ability to travel to 90% of the world, often without the need for a visa. This just isn’t reality for most of the world. If a woman marries an American they can all of a sudden go places and see things that were previously completely out of reach. The benefits of a US passport aren’t limited to living here.

Divorce #s in America are way down overall than they were during the 80s/90s when it was around 50%. Also, I think it's hilarious you talk about a system where it's rewarded for women to divorce you, and in the same post unironically reference foreign women interested in your passport and money. Unless you're planning on marrying a foreign woman and never coming back to the US, guess what, that same system still exists for those women to divorce you, take your assets, and take your kids. So this doesn't exactly feel like logical, sound thinking to me.

Re-read the first paragraph, specifically the part about never returning to the US.

  13. I used to travel internationally a lot for work, mostly to SE Asia. I saw lots of older (50+) American guys who married younger (< 35) Malaysian/Indonesian women and started a family. Many had no intention of ever returning to the US.

Basically, if you’re clearly American and there for work you’re going to receive 50x the level of interest from women over there than you would back home unless you’re in the mythical top 1% of desirability (AKA rich). They’re very interested in your passport, your earning ability, and if you’re lucky, your interests/looks/personality.

If we step back and just ask “what is marriage” it’s essentially a social contract. You give me ABC benefits (companionship, financial stability, parenting partner, etc.) and I’ll give you XYZ in return. For guys who marry into another culture, the math works out better outside the US. There are definitely others who prey on foreign women’s hope to escape poverty, which is pretty disgusting. But I don’t think that everyone has bad intentions.

I’m 36 and single. Dated multiple girls that could have progressed to marriage but never did, mostly because of 10000% craziness. But honestly, what makes me hesitant to marry an American are the divorce statistics. Some crazy high percentage of divorces are initiated by women and all of the divorce laws favor the women. Unless your wife is a currently incarcerated meth addiction, they’re taking the children. I think we’ve built a system where divorce is practically rewarded. I don’t necessarily blame guys for looking for something better overseas.
