Brooks is our best RB. He needs 12-15 carries a game.

They’re really running the mullet transformation story for a second time in the first quarter? Going to be a long season.

He was a great Longhorn. Glad to see he’s found what seems like a more stable landing spot.

Ukraine changes its approach to counteroffensive – The Economist
Alona Mazurenko — Sunday, 20 August 2023, 18:55Ukraine has changed its tactics since the start of its counteroffensive in June 2023. Instead of using the approach that involves heavy losses, the Ukrainians are now trying to suppress the Russian forces with artillery, electronic warfare systems and UAVs.
Source: The Economist
Quote: "We no longer plan operations that presuppose large losses. The emphasis is now on degrading the enemy: artillery, drones, electronic warfare and so on."
Details: Referring to a source in the Ukrainian General Staff, The Economist writes that Ukraine has received only 60 Leopard tanks, despite having been promised hundreds.
Now, according to the sources of the Economist, there is a catastrophic lack of demining machines.
Quote: "We simply don’t have the resources to do the frontal attacks that the West is imploring us to do."
Another problem is the lack of air cover, which makes it difficult for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to break through Russian minefields and defence lines.

For this reason, the military leadership of Ukraine postponed the counteroffensive for as long as it could.
It is noted that the beginning of the counteroffensive in June was "disastrous". The media reported that two brigades trained in the West lost many people and equipment in minefields. After that, the original plans were adjusted.
According to the source of the General Staff, since then Ukraine has made a priority on preserving the army.
According to The Economist, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have made significant advancements on the southern front and may have managed to get past enough minefields to reach the first of the three lines of Russian defence, but after two and a half months, Ukraine is still far from achieving its strategic objective of approaching the Sea of Azov and closing Russia's land route to the Crimea.
It’s pretty shitty that we (NATO as a whole) promise XX of a certain weapon system, deliver 20% of that number in double the time, and get upset that the Ukrainians aren’t driving this equipment full speed into minefields.

To be absolutely clear, that isn't at all what I was saying. Getting F-16s (or really, any aircraft) to Ukraine is important. But it isn't in a game changer in the sense that it doesn't, in and of itself, drastically change Ukraine's capabilities or the overall battlefield picture. The original supply of HIMARs and GMLRs was a game changer because it allowed Ukraine to accurately hit greater depths of targets, largely outside of the effective range of Russian artillery/rocket response. The arrival of Storm Shadow and SCALP was similarly game-changing. A handful of F-16s don't present that sort of dynamic, even if they are absolutely vital to Ukraine's long-term prospects. They replace capabilities that have been attrited over time, but don't by themselves give Ukraine a new capability it didn't have before.
I am by no means an expert on these weapon systems, but my understanding was that the F16 provides a response to one of the most effective tactics Russia has employed during the counteroffensive - the use of low-flying KA52 helicopters to destroy Ukrainian armor. The helicopters fly lower than the effective floor of air defense systems and strike from 10+ km away to eliminate the threat of MANPADS. Fighter jets can be scrambled, fly similarly low, and strike back with air to air missiles.

Even though we’re theoretically a lot closer to the end of this than the beginning, why does it feel more hopeless than ever?

I’m going to Alaska for 5 days next week. Was hoping that the conditions would moderate at least slightly by the time I get back. I shouldn’t have expected any relief in this absolutely hellish summer.

Their debt service has also gone up in the last 2 years, are they going the way of the minimum payments on the credit card route?
Variable rate loan. Helped them get a lower down payment.

Signaling long term weapon deliveries is the best thing we could do to send message to Russia that it isn't going to be able to outlast Ukraine.
I’m sure the thinking inside Russia is that they just need to last until the presidential election. I don’t mean this as a political comment because I have no idea who will win. But we don’t have a good track record of sticking behind existing foreign policy on changes of administration.

Regardless of whether it happens within the next 6 weeks or not, we need to be committed to continuing support until it does.

Can we please take the AGW arguments to the cloak room? This thread is about 2023 misery only.

Also very aggy of them to play the victim card and describe the shelling of ammunition depots and warehouses as “terrorism”.

The tone of the practice reports really does seem different this year. This team is as close to “complete” as we’ve had in over a decade.

You can drink and watch sports, and if you're really far north, you can ice fish and drink, where you're in a little shack on the ice, with a heater, internet, TV, etc.
When I was a kid and we lived up north for a few years, a whole lot of men had their little ice fishing shacks they'd haul out on the ice, and had generators to run the TVs and they'd just spend the whole day drinking and watching sports. Internet access adds a whole new dimension, so you can drink, watch sports, and shit post on the internet. And occasionally catch fish.
Whenever I hear people say “you don’t have to shovel heat” this is my counterpoint. Yes, getting cold sucks. But you can wear a jacket or 3, bring a space heater, build a campfire, etc. and still enjoy a full day outdoors. When it’s hot as shit there is literally nothing you can do besides stay inside.

Supposedly the long, snowy winters of the north make people depressed. Well this shit just makes me angry. I’m furious.

There is a very good chance that this is my last summer in Texas. It’s not worth being here when it’s this miserable.

⚡️Today at around 11:00 a.m., soldiers from the Russian Freedom Legion fighting on the side of 🇺🇦Ukraine discovered and destroyed a 🇷🇺Russian warehouse of ammunition and fuel lubricants in the area of Zaitseve.
According to the panicked scream in the intercepts, the occupation formations tried to store there 82mm and 120mm mortar shells, 30 mm shells and TM-62 anti-tank mines.
Next step will be capital controls that declare you WILL exchange your dollar for 80 rubles otherwise you’re an extremist and heading to the gulag.

Michael Kofman and Rob Lee were just in Ukraine, including around Bakhmut. On Kofman's last two podcasts he's said he expects it to be a grinding offensive the whole way due to the extensive layered Russian defenses.
I think there is one big milestone when the game changes somewhat. Whenever the Azov / Black Seas are within HIMARS range and there are no “safe” logistics routes or command centers I could see the pace picking up significantly.
