    Nervous about this series.

I fail to comprehend how an Astros fan in 2025 can be nervous about a series in the first week of July.

We’ve been in a golden age for a decade.

It don’t make a shit until September.

On brand. Don’t question authority. Believe the lies.

Cui bono?  It makes no fucking sense that the medical staff would lie about player injuries.  There's no benefit to it.

Y'all need to grow up and realize that in the real world, medical diagnoses and treatment plans have a measure of uncertainty and error.

Everyone involved with the Astros medical staff, from the head trainer to the intern that takes coffee orders, needs to be fired. This shit is absurd.

Yes, because this is all an exact science with rigid timelines and no one ever has a setback.

You can win a world series with them in fact.

Can't even list all of the times this has happened. A mediocre offense that finds ways to score and two lockdown starters.

The two that come to mind immediately are the '01 D-Backs and (GODAMMIT!) the '19 Nats.

It's like having a lights out defense and serviceable QB in the NFL.

Ok, you're not wrong, but this is not the first time he's done exactly this and been chastised for it. He was doing it deliberately in order to provoke a reaction. Context. Context. Context.

And again, the main point of contention was that he was spouting EU Great Replacement Theory bullshit (which is blatant, naked racism) alongside the use of that pejorative.

I will say it again, you lack the proper context. You're literally the guy Walter was ranting about in the Big Lebowski, wandering into a conversation you have no frame of reference for in order to wag your finger and play hall monitor.

    Ok.

You think that was why people were calling him a racist? Go back to the Elon thread, dude, you're out of your element.

I mean, you highlighted that word in the post where you called him racist.  That’s pretty strong context.

  7. Not defending RK.  I can’t defend his lack of empathy and general assholery.

I just think we are all better served by being a bit more judicious when labeling something as racist.

“Gypsy” is a word that we would all do well to remove from our vocabulary, but there is a LOT of education that still needs to happen on that front.

In modern American English, that word has come to be associated more with an itinerant lifestyle rather than with the Roma people directly.  I don’t immediately assume racist intent when I hear someone use it.  It’s usually complete ignorance that it has any pejorative connotation at all.

what the fuck even IS an "islamist"?

Islamist and Christofascist are equivalent terms.  Both seek a return to religious fundamentalism and religious control of government.  Islamist has been a pretty standard term in geopolitics for more than a quarter century.

Watched it a few nights ago.  It's a movie I'll watch several times a year and definitely a top five movie for me.

I didn't read it, but my wife was telling me she read that Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't really get along and it made the scenes between them two so good due to it.  Has anyone else seen this?

    "That's a 20-footer."  "25.  Three tons of him".

Also, the rare occasion the movie is better than the book.

Cautionary Tales podcast had a "Jaws at 50" episode last week.  It goes into the dynamic between Shaw and Dreyfuss quite a bit.  There is a theory that Shaw was going really method to generate actual tension between the two so that it would come through in the performances.  Once they filmed the Indianapolis story scene, Shaw's antagonism of Dreyfuss stopped completely.

everyone and their dog knew he was signing a horrible deal

Eh... there's a lot of hindsight factored into this point of view.

There's a lot to be said for being able to hire a personal trainer and manage nutrition very early in one's career to accelerate development and maximize earning potential.  Tatis got all those benefits at someone else's expense.

He sold equity in his potential earnings to an investor.  If he gets injured or flames out early in his career, that investor has to eat the loss.  He signs a $340M deal and everybody wins.

I'm a Tatis Jr fan, but I have very little sympathy for him here.   He has an AAV of around $24M. Between his agent and BLA, they probably take around $2M each, leaving him with around $20M before taxes per year for the next ten years.  Cry me a river.
