  1. I had my one year post vax appt. with the Moderna trial last Friday.  Mostly just did bloodwork.  They told me starting around Sept. 20th they will be calling us back in and start their booster trial to whomever wants it.   Double blind again, so half of us will get the booster and the other half placebo. I will partake.

My Texas Cares antibody result was 390 after 1 year.  43 year old male and no health issues.

After reading a few articles based on what @Dontshootrude posted last week,  I don't feel as anxiuos about getting the booster on my own right away.

  2. I just got back from a National Parks tour last week.   Flew into Minneapolis and headed west.  Ended up in Portland, OR. 12 days later.  4,956 miles driven!

It was a one way rental with Alamo that I booked at the end of May.   $1,300 was the total for a Chevy Traverse that had 21,000 miles on it, which I didn't think was too bad considering the pandemic. If I had waited until June/July that price would have been at least doubled.  Booking early was the key for me.

There were not a ton of cars in the garage when I picked it up, but didn't have an issue getting my SUV.

  3. Moderna trial participant here.  I got an S-protein antibody test outside of the trial 1 month, 6 months and 1 year post vaccination.

Here are my results. (Note: the test done was a Euroimmun ELISA qualitative assay to detect IgG antibodies. >1.09 = Positive)

    Oct. 19th, 2020 = 8.99

    Mar. 31st, 2021 = 6.88

    Aug. 31st, 2021 = 2.52

I also did the Texas Cares study on Monday and my result for that test was 390.

I have my 1 year appt. tomorrow with Moderna, I'll see what they say about a booster.

  4. I'm in the Moderna trial and had my first shot a year ago on Aug. 18th.  I had my blood drawn for the Texas Cares study yesterday and my antibody level is 390.

Anything above 0.8 is positive,  so it doesn't seem as bad when you look at it like that.   :)

I was also negative for prior infection.

Prepare to sit on your ass for a long time at the crossing.

My wife is Canadian, and we haven't seen her family in over two years (nor our children their grandparents).  We've been watching closely for when things would open back up.  Finally got her parents a second dose of vaccine a couple of weeks ago (yes it took Canada that long to get the elderly vaccinated), and they're planning to head down here in September.  Hoping we can go back to spend Christmas up there.

I'd keep your head on a swivel, though, as the current circumstances are perfect for them to shut the border back down any second.

Yes,  I heard about the strike that started today I believe.  I'm hoping things stay open,  but have a back up plan if they don't.  (Which would be just staying in Glacier NP an extra night before heading down to Yellowstone.)

I thought that you couldn’t get into Canada unless you are an essential worker…or Canadian.

Fully vaccinated Americans can travel to Canada starting August 9th.  You still have to have a negative covid test within 72 hours before entry.   :(

we did the rapid NAAT at walgreens a couple weeks back, got all of our results back within 2 hours.

I am planning on getting this same rapid test done for a trip to Canada in two weeks.  No flight, just a border crossing in Montana.

Does anyone know if Canada will accept this test?  On the Canadian health website it says any molecular covid test including NAAT.  So I am hoping I will be good.

This is what the Mayo Clinic says BUT I’m sure some surely Doc knows better than I.

    For the U.S

Adult and teenage males—15 milligrams (mg) per day.
Adult and teenage females—12 mg per day.
    Pregnant females—15 mg per day.
    Breast-feeding females—16 to 19 mg per day.
Children 4 to 10 years of age—10 mg per day.
Children birth to 3 years of age—5 to 10 mg per day.

Right now I am taking between 15 and 20 mg each day. Just wasn't sure if that was enough.

Its crazy how the govt or anyone in charge isnt telling people to take lots of Vitamin D and/or Zinc during these peaks. They make a huge difference imo

I grabbed some zinc and vitamin d last week.   What dosage of zinc per day is too much?

The only real appreciable difference between MRNA and PFE is the admin regimen.  3w second dose vs 4 week second dose.  Some data suggests that longer duration of time between 1st and 2nd dose may result in more robust immune response, but I doubt that 1 week makes that much of a difference.  To the extent that there actually is a different between MRNA and PFE breakthrough cases (and I am not convinced that there is), it may be due to higher risk individuals getting PFE earlier on (older with less robust immune response and high exposure risk HCWs).  At least that's my thinking.

Moderna is also a 100-microgram dosage versus 30-micrograms for Pfizer.  Would that have any affect on protection?

  11. I went to Marrakech in 2019 and stayed here,  https://www.leclosdesarts.com/ just inside the medina. It was really nice.   I enjoyed staying in the old quarter, but damn that place is a maze.  Great experience though!  The people whizzing by you on their scooters in the narrow alleyways takes some getting used to.

There appear to be no traffic rules near the medina.  Cars can be 8 across on a small street and you might have a horse and carriage on one side and a dump truck on the other.

I only did a day trip to the Atlas mountains with a driver.  Just stopped at various overlooks and took pictures.   Also did a private tour of the medina, which was really nice.   The Majorelle Gardens are worth a stop.

Eat a bunch of weird shit!  I used to watch Bizarre Foods, which did an episode in Morocco.  I had my riad make me khlea (preserved meat) one morning for breakfast.  Sheep's head, including the eyes, cooked right in the ground close the Jemaa el-Fnaa square.  And of course a bowl of snails.

I did a food tour through the medina one evening which I highly recommend.  https://marrakechfoodtours.com/

I also did a hammam, which was a cool experience and would do again. You basically get a napkin to cover yourself.

    Have fun!

We accessed it through the Blackfeet Reservation and then border crossing. Looks like Blackfeet Reservation opened up to cars last month so at least half your issue should be taken care of.

If you have a few extra days I would head north from Waterton into some of the Canadian National Parks near Banff.

Mount Assiniboine is on my bucket list. Only accessible via helicopter or 20+ mile hike from the trailhead.

Canada opens back up on Aug. 9th for fully vaccinated Americans!  I'll be in Waterton at the Prince of Wales hotel the last week of August.  Can't wait!

  13. I went to Panama City for a few days at the end of a trip to Costa Rica in 2016, just to take a cruise through the Panama Canal and go to the Canal museum.  It took the entire day to go through the Canal, but I found it worth it. If you are into modern marvels. :)

And yes, going through Colon on the bus ride back to Panama City was a little terrifying.  That town looked trashy to say the least.
