How many terrorists/fighters/support personnel  does Hamas have in Gaza? With a population of 2.3 million, if one out of every 23 people were a member, that would be 100k. I would imagine it is more than that. 1 out of 10 would be 230k.

It costs me $200 in diesel to get down there and back.  Just to find something broke/went wrong.  I bought the heaviest dumb steel feeder I could find, with the best timer (THE TIMER) I could find.     Knock on wood but replaced battery after 3 years and that's it.  Hope it stays that way.

100% this.  I want big, heavy duty feeders with The Timer and a good solar panel.  They are bullet proof.

Had a guy in Beaumont who worked in sheet metal.  He would build me 2000 pounders with 4 heavy pipe legs.  Best feeders ever.  Pipe legs also had a little pad at bottom.  I drilled hole in in at drove in 1/2" rebar to stake down.  Sumbitch is rock solid.

It is a 500 mile round trip, I'm in the same boat. I'm set up to only fill up feeders once a year. Especially after putting coon hoods on my protein feeder.

This reminds me of a guy I met from Abilene who chose UTEP over Tech because even though the school was probably better he said Lubbock was too much of a shithole for him.

Yeah same here. A few years ago my company paid for me to take a high-stakes professional certification exam that many of my clients take in order to be more credible. 4 hours long, if you fail, you don't get to take it again for like 6 months etc. I didn't have time to take a class, but I hit the books, read on planes, etc. But mind you I had ZERO direct experience with the day to day of this profession I'm getting certified for.
Other people in the testing place who were taking it would literally not get promotions or keep jobs they had been hired for if they didn't pass, and had been working towards this moment for years. Before the test, one of them asked me what I did and how long I had been in the field.  I said "I'm not, I'm in business development. But if I don't pass it will be really embarassing," and the reaction was like this:

Look this is fine - everybody has their own calculus. But for most people outside the 1%, for most of whom grad school is not on the table, there are a lot of schools and majors that are worth it for $25k but just don't pencil out at 2023 prices, especially given the poor economic prospects for well-read generalists who do not also have some kind of specialized expertise or demonstrated aptitude in an in-demand field. I want my kids to be well rounded and self-actualized as well. I do not want to fork over $300k or even $100k for my girls to be told to read Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance unless ther brand prestige and social network of the school is so immense that it opens doors to career advancement.

IOW - college in 2023 for most people is to prepare for the workforce. Learning is over a lifetime and mostly available free.

As parents, most of us went to a university when it was cheap, and the "experience" wasn't cost prohibitive. That has all changed today. For STEM, any in-state ABET certified engineering program will do, if the student maintains a high GPA. I got my kid out with no student debt. He has been on the slow boat to Lockheed (security clearances, new fiscal year) and is on target for three positions. He already owns property in our subdivision, wants to build a house and stay close. He really hasn't put in a lot of applications, but has been interviewed for all of the ones he has put in, and turned down a couple of positions. He is interviewing for a design engineering position, this morning, here in Granbury. Design is what he wants to do, and if the compensation is the same, he will probably take it over Lockheed.

People that want to let their kids go out of state or private for a degree in teaching, social work, marine biology, and the like are insane. Save that money to help your kid get something worthwhile, like a badass honeymoon, or a down payment on a house. Send them to Texas State, SFA, Tarleton, UNT, etc.

As far as resumes and cover letters? Companies don't want to hear about your personal goals and aspirations. They want to see your experience, that you are wanting to learn, and you will put the companies interest before your own as a new grad.

  5. I have about a half dozen friends that I have hugged and told them "I love them" for decades. I was always lucky in that my parents and extended family always hugged, and told each other "I love you." Mrs. CHIEF's family were stodgy old Germans, they even shook hands with their own children, parents, and siblings. I was the one that came in and upset the apple cart. Before she passed, my MIL would get upset if I didn't tell her I loved her, and gave her a hug. I don't know, maybe this is the reason I never feel lonely, I have people that I love, and I know they love me back even when I'm not with them.

My wife is lebanese, and can run pretty hot, so the last thing I am going to stick in her hand is one of my guns. But if I did I would probably go with a revolver.

Yep, Mrs. CHIEF carries that five shot .38 S&W Airweight. She can hit a pie plate all five times at 5-10 feet, that is really all women need to be proficient. Bad guys are trying to rape, assault, rob women, not immediately kill them.  Mrs. CHIEF is in a pretty rough part of Houston for work, occasionally. She keeps the pistol in her purse and her finger close to the trigger while walking into the hotel. She has enough nerve to let someone get within a couple of feet, and calm enough to make sure she is going to hit her target and shoot through the front of her purse.

A close family friend that teaches CCL classes said the statistics bear this scenario out an overwhelming amount of the times of crimes against women.   He recommended a revolver, as it is easier to operate, load, and unload more safely without causing an unintentional discharge.

  7. My Pros and Cons as a WFH real estate agent since 2019, living about 20 minutes from town:

    Pros:

Hit the fridge anytime you want.

    Minimum clothing expense.

    Have a beer with lunch.

Thermostat set where I want it.

Have only put 8,000 miles on my truck.

Can fuck around on Surly all day.

Mrs. CHIEF works from home a couple of days per week, afternoon breaks are nice.

    My own toilet with bidet.

    Cons:

I needed to go to HEB on Thursday, last Thursday.

Always watching out the window for my daily Amazon delivery.

Hiding in the house from the yardman so he thinks I'm too busy to mow my own yard, rather than just too lazy.

Creates separation anxiety in my dog, cause I'm always supposed to be here.

Low patience with people when I do go to town (get your fucking buggy out of the middle of the aisle, get off your phone and go, the light has been green for six seconds, etc.)

  8. I was thinking about this thread last night. We have a Wednesday night Bible study, afterwards I go to the 19th Hole for drinks, each week, ironically. You can tell who the lonely people are. After reading about 4-5 scriptures, the widows and the single people have to stop the reading to go down a rabbit hole about how the scripture relates to a certain thing or situation that happened in their life. You know what? The 19th Hole was the same way. They are so eager to tell their story. Their loneliness has obliterated their social and conversation skills. No one knows how to be good listeners. Whats worse is that no one really has empathy, they are too caught up in their own situations. So I spent last night concentrating on being a good listener. I sat there in silence as six people tried talking over each other and realized it was just nerve wracking. A buddy, Marcus and some guys at the next table were playing 42, you know who was having a good conversation? Those guys. My solution is that everyone should have a box of dominoes on them at all times, so they have to stop talking long enough to think.

I've also learned that it is best to greet someone with "its nice to see you," never "how are you?"

Wasn't Gen X the first everyone gets a trophy generation?

I was born in 1968. My Little League team was just like The Bad News Bears without the winning. We all sucked except Mario Rodriguez. That kid could ball. He never dissed the rest of us six year olds and had every right to. Was one of my true first best friends.

Y’all never stop complaining about being ignored and left out!

It’s not complaining, I couldn’t give a single shit. I take it as a badge of honor. My grandparents were the Greatest Generation. We are the “Just Keep Your Trap Shut” generation. Social media became a thing after we were grown, and out of college. We are too busy raising families with kids in college to give a fuck.

Why does Gen X seem to be forgotten so often?  I know we're a small generation, relatively speaking, but wtf?

Because we don't bitch much, don't give a shit about polls, and are keeping our nose to the grindstone during our best earning years.

Anecdotal from my experiences and don’t have any data to support it, but when I was young many of our family friends and networks were made through and around the kids.  Parents would meet at ball games, PTA meetings, etc and would become friends.  Then we’d get together on weekends, go camping, back yard BBQs, and so on.

With my peers, one of the top reasons given for why people can’t get together is activities and commitments associated with their kids.  I’ve heard friends say that they don’t have time for their peers anymore after having kids.

When I was a kid, there were no "travel teams" in my area. Pee Wee football and Lil' Dribblers was it. One or two games for about a 6-8 week period, and that was it. You made friends with teammates from kids in other areas of town that you maybe didn't go to school or church with. But you had all the time in the world to go camping, bike riding, fishing, and other things kids are supposed to do.

The reason people can't do anything social anymore, is because every parent's kid is special, and needs to be on a competitive travel team instead of a rec team. CHIEF Jr. was on one for exactly one summer, and we told him it was only rec teams after that. Four games throughout the week, and tournaments all day on Saturday and Sunday is just too much. Kids are over scheduled, and the only socializing the parents have time for is talking with the other parents the other 30 hours of the week they are at the ballpark or court. I know people that have two or three kids of different ages, all on travel teams, many struggle with the financial obligations (ask grandparents to help), and if they are not at home, they are at one of the kid's sporting event. The financial part of it caused my BIL's divorce. You can't have a conversation with them, because it all evolves around their kid's sports, because that is all they have to talk about.

When was the last time one of y’all had a block party in your neighborhood? My folks, before retiring to the coast, lived in the same hood for over 40 years. Before I was 10 we had at least 2 big block parties that I can remember. I asked my folks if any had happened since I moved out at 18 and they said no. Now some of that is because it was young, growing families that moved in when the neighborhood was built and as kids (and parents) got older, moved out, promotions at work with more responsibilities these things fell to the wayside. However, in the past 10-15 years right before they left, much of the hood had flipped and again has younger, growing families. But still no block parties. I guess it’s all the same factors that we are discussing that have caused people to become more insulated and isolated.

We have a huge back porch with a fireplace and outdoor kitchen, it was almost every weekend with our friends when CHIEF Jr. was in elementary and junior high. When he was in high school and college, that switched to his friends being here every weekend. Now that they have all graduated and moved away or gotten married, it has pretty much dropped to 3-4 times per year. Many moved to the DFW area, but several have moved back, and more are trying, once it cools off, we will probably be back to every other weekend or so. We have always been the "notorious" party house in our community.

  14. I don't ever feel lonely, as I live in a community with a lot of work from home folks, and retirees. All I have to do is go to the clubhouse and there are multiple groups of people to talk to. The problem I have, is no one knows how to carry on a conversation anymore. No one is listening to one another, they are just thinking about the next thing they are going to say, interrupting each other, and then going down a boring rabbit hole. There is also a lot of "one upmanship." Gone are the days of the good storyteller, someone will interrupt and they never get to finish the story.

At least, on Surly, you can lay out a whole conversation, or idea, and have it agreed with, or criticized. It sucks, but it is the reality I have come to realize.

I sort of think this defense and special teams might be better. I know I’d take the specialists from this team, and the linebackers on the 2005 team were a real problem for us, while this one has Ford and Ant Hill. This years DL is deeper. This years secondary is as deep- but that secondary was awesome and just had absurd high end talent.
It’s not there yet and who know if it will get there, but I think it might surprise me if we aren’t actually better on defense and special teams.
we are a lot deeper at WR and better top end talent too. RB and OL 2005 was so much better. TE probably a push. Coordinators are better on this years team. VY was just such a motherfucker that I’d like 2005 favored over any college team ever to play, but we’d have some strengths on this one and reason to be excited.

I think the starters at every position on the 2005 team were better than this team's starters, but the 2005 team never had this kind of depth with no drop off. Of course, VY is the GOAT, but MM and Arch behind Quinn is pretty salty. Sark is light years better than GD, but I think Vince took GD's playbook with a grain of salt. He was just Vince being Vince.

Here is my real reason to think that the 2005 Longhorns set themselves apart. 2005 USC and Ohio State would boat race anyone suiting up currently. Georgia, FSU, Michigan, UT. The 2005 Longhorns would beat the current team by about three scores. I actually think the Horseshoe at night was probably a tougher game then USC. Both were Herculean efforts. It's tough to make comparisons across decades with the ever increasing weights, heights, speed, and other "measurables."We might have a few "once in a decade" type players, but I have only seen one "once in a lifetime" player, and he wore Burnt Orange.
