  1. We went and saw Marty Haggard, here, in Granbury last night. He plays his dad's songs, but the best part is he tells the stories behind the song. He said he gets creeped out by certain songs like "My Favorite Memory". He was about 15 or 16, and the line "we made love in the hall and slept on the floor" was true. Apparently Merle and his third wife, Leona, (he married two different women named Leona) really did that, and Marty had to step over their naked bodies to get to the kitchen.

He sang the "Whole World Is Going to Pot". The story behind that was Willie called his dad and was playing at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe and wanted him to come over. They drove the 123 miles from their home , near Redding, to Tahoe. He said they went to the house that Harrah's had for the big name celebrities to stay in, and Willie had a silver platter with what must have been 1-2 pounds of some of the finest Weed known to man. He rolled a joint that was about like a Churchill cigar. He lit it and took a puff, and passed it to Merle, who passed it to Marty. Marty said that Willie immediately started rolling another one. Eventually they had three joints going around between them. He said the last thing he remembered was asking Willie why didn't he just roll three joints and let everyone have their own. He said it was the first and last time he ever smoked. He remembered sitting in Willie's living room, and the next thing he remembered was waking up in his bed, back in Redding.

  2. I swear Mrs. CHIEF has to be a man trapped in a female body. I asked her what she wanted to do for Valentines. She said we will take care of that tonight. It is just another holiday that Hallmark made up to sell cards. She is way too practical and level headed. I guess that’s why we are going on 32 years of marriage.

I asked the lady at the Allsup's on the north end of Graham, one time, if she would sell me a case of burritos. She said "yes". I asked her how much? It was basically the full retail price, plus, I would have to cook them, and they didn't even come with the "burrito sleeve".

The guy that owns Yes Way lives in Graham, I met him and leased his place for oil and gas. From what I remember, he didn't have a lot of stores and wasn't overly wealthy back in 2014. But he did build us a nice new Allsup's that has been open about six months outside our west gate. I can get a burrito in about 10 minutes anytime I want. All of the new stores are spotless, ours, the two new ones in Mineral Wells, so he has that going for him, which is nice.

There is definitely an art to the timing of when to eat an avocado.

I usually buy about five. I get one or two that are perfectly ripe and ready to eat that day. A couple that will be ripe in the next couple of days. A third that is still about four days out.

I hope you make it, too. One interesting thing about these boards is that we're all sort of the same age in the way we write, joke, and argue over meaningless shit. There's even juvenile commentary about women.

I've finally stopped assuming the crowd is young. A lot of us were posting on hornfans 20 years ago.

Yep, I remember bitching about all of the rain from my hotel room, on Hornfans, while waiting for VY to do his thang against USC in the Rose Bowl.

He may be fine and have it all documented to a T.  I’ve just seen more than a few high flying up and comers play fast and loose with that stuff and end up with their ass in a sling when they are finally done with the IRS/States/localities.   Which ironically manifests itself when business sucks so it’s a big issue.

There is no doubt there are big tax advantages to owning an LLC and associated deductions.

That's what I do on a much smaller scale, with my Mom. Most of our assets are in two different LLCs that we both contribute to. My F-350, and our shop had to be depreciated, but our tractor, skid steer, forklift, and two trailers we took the full amount off the first year they were purchased. I make sure and take clients to the deer lease a couple of times a year to shoot hogs, and use the Ranger to show properties. I think the lease and the Ranger are pretty easy to explain, but probably would be the only thing that might raise any kind of flag. I make sure to put money back in an interest bearing account in case something were to come up. I think the risk is worth the reward, I've known guys who have operated this way for years, that have taken much riskier tax positions than I have, and have yet to be audited. But, money does need to be put back, if the IRS doesn't see things the same.

Every tax return is an opening bid.  IRS can go hot & mean on all that real quick

True. He has a CPA that stays on top of it and documents each and every expense. All of his friends that live around him, and that he parties with, he cleans a firebreak around their property for free each year, and does anything they want done extra at a little above cost. Makes it very easy to document them as customers. He sponsors quite a bit to charity golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, etc. A lot of them are customers, or potential customers in O&G. He also bought a couple of semis and started a cattle and hay hauling division for his LLC. But really, construction equipment, and anything else you can fully depreciate the first year seems to work the best for him.

I don't know of anyone that earns a $1 mil W2 income.  And why the hell would you want to and pay an enormous amount of tax.  If you are making 7 figures, you can afford to buy a business or are likely smart enough to start and run one where you can "make" way less, work less, and keep the same amount post tax dollars and have actual equity in a business that you can sell.    '

Work smarter, not harder to get to that number.

I have several friends in O&G that make close to 7 fig W-2s. One is the buddy that we hunt with on our new lease. He uses most of his W-2 money in an LLC that he created. He had a guy, on site that was getting a divorce, he had bought all of the equipment to start a land clearing business, but his wife asked for a divorce right after he had made the purchase. It was about $250k worth of equipment, he sold it to our buddy for $100k since he needed the money immediately for divorce funds. That kinda started my buddy down the road of having multiple small businesses that aren't shown to be real profitable, but you get the depreciation, and you only pay long term capital gains when you sell the business at a profit.

I will say, by far, the biggest benefit is writing off $15-20k/month of partying, vacation travel, ski boats, "company" vehicles, and the like off as company or entertainment expenses. He just gets to write shit off that he was going to do anyway.

Your math isn’t adding up. First you said that you gave him $60, then you said that you gave him $70.

I didn’t count it. Was told later she handed me $40. Probably to make her feel superior to my $30. You know how women are.

Y’all will like this.  I won my FFL season this year with a bunch of Longhorn alums in the league. It’s customary for the champ to buy a bar tab for the local guys that can make it.

Instead I’m buying range time at Eagle Peak in Leander for a good old fashioned shootem’ up!  Probably 7 or 8 of us will go with a substantial arsenal.

    should be fun!

It's funny you mentioned Eagle Peak. Use to hang out there when I lived in Cedar Park. It's where I taught CHIEF Jr. to shoot. I cleaned out all of the old business cards, and expired health insurance cards out of my wallet yesterday. Still had my Eagle Peak membership card, figured I would probably never be going back, so I threw it in the trash.

The obvious answer was a gift card to the Dollar Store

I’m sure he needed the cash for gas. I hardly carry cash, usually just use my debit card. I had $30 that has probably been in my wallet for six months, I gave that, and husseled the wife for another &40, that was all the cash she was carrying.
We were in CHIEF Jr.’s truck, we had to go pick up some tables and chairs for the birthday party. Mrs. CHIEF brought up that we should have checked the console, he always has cash in there. Sure enough, she opened it up and there was $200 sitting right there. I would have given him that as well if I would have thought to check it. I don’t mind at all helping a guy that works a sixty hour week to try and take care of his family.

The second worst hit ever put on Tech. The hit Nathan Vasher put on Carlos Francis, on that punt return is the most vicious hit I've seen in real life. That includes Blain Irby. That hit wasn't extremely violent, you just knew the result in about the remaining 0.20/second of the catch. I was heartbroken for him.

Seriously, though....the best part of that pic was the Hanson brothers on the right.  They were AWESOME.  Two Canuck jerseys and a Bruins jacket, all black, and they surely thought they were real ladies' men.

They had to go out of their way to find such poorly fitting outfits.

I read a long time ago that somewhere around 92 cents out of every dollar donated to the Red Cross never leaves the organization due to inefficiency and bloat.

Sounds about right. Their president was paid over $800k for the year according to this: https://paddockpost.com/2024/03/24/executive-compensation-at-the-american-red-cross-2022/ and they have quite a few other executives making over $500k.

I've heard the same about March of Dimes, American (body part/disease) Societies having the same issue.
