This is an interesting and sobering article. Long story short, really smart Cali kid who scored a 1590 on the SAT was rejected by 16 of 18 schools. He did get into Texas and Maryland. He was rejected by MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cornell University, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, Georgia Tech, Caltech, University of Washington and University of Wisconsin. He's Asian so that may or may not have had anything to do with his rejections (that's definitely for another thread).

College admissions has gotten absolutely fucking stupid.

Good news is that he was offered a job at Google. Looks like he turned down Texas to be employed by Google.

    https://abc7news.com/stanley-zhong-college-rejected-teen-full-time-job-google-admissions/13890332/

His essays could have been terrible, other portions of his app could not have been great, etc. Some of the more selective schools have actively come out and said they aren’t necessarily focusing on the smartest at this point and are going for well rounded students that have a better chance of being involved on campus. One of the kids from our school graduated near the top of his class, made a 35, didn’t make it into UGA and a mix of other known schools. He’s also white, upper class, and wanted to go into the business school which has the highest application rate at most of those schools. There are a ton of stories out there about similar examples.

Our oldest is going to focus on trying to get into an Honors college at the back end of the Top 100 schools. She’s been invited to apply for a couple high end scholarship/honors college opportunities so she is going to go after those. After looking at the common dataset in the colleges she applied for originally, she really shot for some ultra low acceptance rate schools. She’s also applying with English as her major and excellent essays, so maybe one of them will give her a shot.

UGA is another tough school to get accepted.

I must say, having a Texas degree (we know this already) has a lot cache and meaning.  I travel the country for work, mainly TX to VA and most of the Southeast states, and a Texas degree, even if just undergrad turns some heads.  I think a lot of it is working with similar aged people who have bright kids that cant get in gives us/me/you a lot of credibility.  With that said,  one still has to prove themselves no matter the endeavor,  but having that Texas degree and life experiences Austin, I wouldn't trade it.

If you aren’t going to get into Texas in state, you’re probably not close to making the cut at GA out of state unless you are applying to a less sought after degree program. The numbers there are ridiculous on out of state acceptance rates.

Fair enough. But i didn't really watch the game much as neither of those teams really move the needle for me. I'm curious how many of those sacks were because he didn't make quick enough reads or know where he was going with the ball.

While Jones might not have the problem last night, he's a huge problem at QB and they are going nowhere with him.

    cf604791b1b036263b251552476e0f3f.jpg

He was getting hit before anyone would have had a chance to make a read. When he wasn’t hit immediately, it was because he had moved out of the pocket and hadn’t been caught yet. It was terrible blocking from the line, the backs, the TE’s, etc. it wasn’t all on them though. The D gave up long plays down the sidelines that should have been stopped as well. The TD from the backup QB should have easily been stopped. The DB’s had some absolutely terrible fouls. No one on that team wanted to play by the looks of it other than DJ who isn’t good enough to carry a team anywhere. Plus, that fumble he had completely took the wind out of what little they wanted to play.

Something that’s very frustrating to me is when people who can’t afford to have children…have children.

If everyone waited until they thought they could afford kids to have kids, there would be very few kids.

That was my immediate take as well.  How much money do people pay each month to keep shit that they don't use enough to keep in the house?

Welcome to the wives thread, first time visit? On a serious note, there is a reason storage units are going for astronomical multiples right now. People have too much shit combined with an annuitized billing methodology means 14x multiples.

    Scott's-Parker's Barbeque

Picture is not great, but just for the record they do pulled pork that is right up there with anyone’s. We’ve been stopping there on lake weekends for as long as I can remember. You’re not going to find brisket, ribs, etc just whole hog pulled pork served one way.

The sky is the limit. The kitchen is next on our contractor’s list and we’re $80k in with just the cabinetry and appliances. Hardwood and counters will be another chunk on top of that. My wife has a real knack for going with the absolute most expensive option she can find without even knowing what the prices are.

Finally got contract settled to go ahead and start as well as the last of the appliances, so we’re moving forward. Kitchen renovation is going to cost more than the 2nd house we moved into in the mid 2000’s. Just in time for the kids to be leaving for college too, so it will get a lot of use in the future.

Yes there is definitely a superstition that renaming a boat is bad luck. I’ve heard various fixes for that, including breaking a bottle over the bow like fatty mentioned. But my favorite is having a virgin urinate over the bow of the boat.

As long as the virgin doesn’t have to be female, you should be able to find a few around here that can piss off your boat for you.

  8. Every time we drive somewhere separate my wife parks on the opposite side of the parking lot for some stupid reason. I’m typically always the first one there and will park where there are spaces together, she never parks there.

She wanted help loading a new Christmas tree today, so she followed me over there on my way back to work. I pull in, park near the store exit with spaces all around for easy out like a normal person, she goes down past the entrance to the far side of the lot and parks. She did offer me a ride back to my vehicle, I just walked off.

How many colleges did y'all take your kids to growing up to scout? My parents love college sports so we went to probably a hundred campuses if you count everything between driving around and taking formal tours as visits. If it was up to my parents, they would have had one at Flagler College, one at VMI or Washington & Lee, and one at Northwestern.

I guess it didn't really end up mattering though since two of us went to BU just like they did and everyone else in our family did and the 3rd went DIII in Texas for sports purposes. Oh well it was still fun.

We have probably officially toured 10 or so college campuses at this point with plans to go to another 5-10 this fall. She is applying to a few she hasn’t seen and we’ll tour them later if some of the ones above them on her list don’t work out.

There is this concept of “Buyer and Seller” schools. Buyer schools have to pitch and offer students to get their class full. NC State and Michigan State are buyer schools. They will offer money, sometimes generously, to gifted OOS students. Michigan and North Carolina are Seller schools.  They don’t have to do shit. To quote the sargeant from HEAT: this shit sells itself.

Small schools have much going for them: small classes, personal contact with professors, usually very charming environments. But running into all your hookups every day in the dining hall can be a bit exhausting.

The concept makes perfect sense, I think her issue was that she never realized where the cutoff was on the seller schools. A lot of the state schools have inflated admissions percentages because of in state enrollment, so when you dig around and find out that OOS is sub 6-8% at places like UGA, UNC, Mich, etc it changes the game. She is terrible at simple math which held her ACT score back which will ultimately mean she needs to rethink where she wants to go, quickly. She’s in at any number of good schools, so it will work out with me likely paying more than I had planned based on her high school resume. It’s just a lot different process than what I would have thought.

nvm, it is a law in this state.  Can't believe that the 88th Lege didn't repeal it.

It’s dictated by FLSA under the DOL. To my knowledge there are state laws that can provide further protections to the employee but they cannot go below the federal required standards.

From what I understand, the only school that requires a SAT/ACT score is MIT.  If you have good ones, submit them but don't if not stellar.  Even academic scholarships that used to require high scores to be eligible aren't required to be considered for them.  Again, if good, submit but don't if not...

I think every school my daughter applied to other than NYU and W&M (maybe Illinois) required an ACT or SAT score now. Most (especially in the south) have gone back to required or are going back this year or next.

Maybe I had the wrong takeaway from that article... but is roughly $100k plus some spending money a decent target to shoot for re college savings? Thats... not as bad as I have been afraid of.

Fuck no, depending on where they will want to go versus where you will pay for them to go. Oldest is a senior this year and is sitting top 10 in her class, will have 8 4-5’s on AP’s which will be the max she could take nonArts/language, a little off on the ACT at a 31-32, and most colleges she wants to go to if she can even get in are going to be no money given because they have moved to a more need based approach or they offer limited performance scholarships. Schools like UNC/UVA she will likely not get into as an OOS. We’re figuring roughly $60k a year if she doesn’t get money to one of the places she wants to go that she can get into like Illinois or William and Mary, but Wake was $100k a year for example. Again, she could go to Ole Miss, Bama, a number of other places for free but she wants to go further north to ultimately end up in NYC/CHI post graduate. It’s been a kick in the nuts going through this process.

It’s also hard to narrow schools down when you can’t get into where you really want to go. We’re looking at smaller highly rated liberal arts schools now to see what options there are, but she really wants to go to a large state school for some reason. I think the small private school background she is coming from is driving her to want to be in a big school where she doesn’t know anyone.

Who else offers in-state tuition? I have not been able to find a good resource on this.

I’m not promoting it, but Ole Miss offers in state tuition with a decent GPA/ACT. They have moved up the rankings nationally quite a bit. Bama does as well. Downside, you have a degree from a MS/AL school. I’ve told my daughter I’ll pay full boat anywhere for her not to go to Ole Miss although she has a full ride there if she chooses.

No, tips are the employees not the employers. The employer’s responsibility is to make sure that the employee makes at least minimum wage with tips, but all tips are due to the employee.

  16. Kids picked NYC for their Christmas presents for the second straight year. Looks like we are going to do Christmas week as they want to see it decorated for the holidays. Staying at the Refinery to be near Bryant Park. Past that they don’t have much on their lists if there are any must sees/eats that time of year not listed on the previous pages.

Finally taking my kids skiing for the first time the week after Christmas. My old boss has a house at CB that is available and he's letting use it for the week.

We went skiing almost every year when I was a kid, but I haven't been since 2002ish (def before helmets were the norm).

    A couple of questions:

-My kids are 14, 10, and 8 and none of them have skied before. Is it worth it to splurge for a full day private lesson for them or should I just put them in 1/2 day group lessons with their age group? I picked it up very quickly the first time, but I was 7 or 8 years old at the time too. My 14 year old is built like a baby giraffe so I think it may be a little challenging for him at first.

-If we've got the house for a week do you think me and my kids will have the juice left to ski more than 3 days? My wife has never skied and has no desire to start now, so I bet that her and my daughter (8 y.o.) will end up doing stuff away from the mountain for a few days anyway. I was thinking maybe me and the boys could get in 4 days, but I'm going to have to work hard on my fitness before then.

-Those of you who have been to CB, should I do the rentals through SkiCB? It looks like they have a great location right at the bottom of the lifts. The house we will be staying at is above the golf course on the other side of town so I'd really like to find a way to store our gear at the mountain so I'm not having to haul all the shit for myself and 3 kids back and forth every day.

-Should I buy helmets for everyone or can you rent those too?

I'm going to book flights, reserve lessons, and buy lift tickets this week. I'm so pumped about going skiing again. Can't. Wait.

Mine always did group lessons and will still jump into one this year when we get there just a little more advanced. The only time I ever did a private was when I was with buddies and we wanted to do an advanced private. I think it was really beneficial there because we got one on one, but as a newbie just go group.

As far as timing, if we’re there for a week we usually ski 2, go snowmobiling or something else and then ski 2 more before leaving. The break in the middle lets everyone take a break and do something else fun. With kids that age it’s a crapshoot anyways. My oldest had zero interest and now just hangs out with mom and spends money. The youngest wants to go snowboarding, but she isn’t going open to close for 5+ days.

I had my most of one meniscus removed last summer, and have been having continual issues with both knees for awhile now. I've got skinny legs and while I'm really active I've never needed to weight train to do the things I've wanted to do. It's pretty clear those days are over and I have to strengthen my legs and try to take some of the heat off my knees.

My plan is to be in the best shape of my life next summer at 44. The question is whether I can get through this ski season without major incident so I don't put a roadblock in front of that goal.

My knees are trashed from years of abuse and partial tears, complete tears, etc. The last round of PT I went through they had me work more on stretching the upper and lower leg muscles to get more range of motion in them which helps stabilize the knee and take pressure off them. I still weight train but the focus has been more on range of motion and elasticity of the muscles the last year. Saying all that, I’ve still had to dial back what I do on the slopes and give up wakeboarding completely because there is only so much everything else can cover for if your knees are a problem.

That you feel bad for him suggests empathy. I’ll never understand the sympathy for random people on the internet who are crazy, and delusional in that they think they provide ‘good content’.

How is sympathy for random people on the internet any different than commenting negatively on someone that is gone? It’s opposite sides of the same coin. You either think about it enough to notice (which means that person has made some impression good or bad) or you don’t.

As far as him specifically, he’s been around a long time and has been interesting if nothing else. Hopefully, he does find peace outside of here. That doesn’t seem like that strange a thought for a normal person. I hope most people find peace in their everyday lives just for the record.

Meant to quote the “why” post too just for the record.
