Qatar ties it at 2. Argentina is going to be in last place in the group. Welp.

Perhaps this means that Argentina will go through as the 2nd placed team rather than maybe or maybe not going through as the 3rd place team.

    Vamos a ver.

    A tie helps Argentina.

It has always astounded me how Argentina has wasted the once in a lifetime talent of Messi. (And I've been an Argentina fan since the early 90s)

    1) Messi is an amazing player and has made it to 3 Finals with Argentina, plus he has won a FIFA U-20 WC & an Olympic Gold

    2) Messi is predominately a system player. He would be awesome anywhere, but he is a GOD in the Ajax->Barcelona system.

    3) At times Messi has insisted on playing a true #10, and it hasn't necessarily been up to the coach.

    4) In 2006, Argentina's keeper was injured and so Argentina only could sub 2 field players against Germany and then the Germans scouted PK tendencies and Argentina didn't and they were out.

    5) In 2010, Diego Maradona was the national team "manager". And he made the dumb decision to include a jealous Tevez in the WC squad after he had been banished for over a year. Tevez wouldn't play 1-2s with Messi, even though he had the skill for days, and then Germany happened and Argentina were fucked with Diego as the DT.

    6) Messi skipped (nearly?) all of the friendlies over the past year and now the manager has had to try to tweak the style that he had implemented even though it is the polar opposite of what Messi enjoys at Barcelona.

Argentina would have been better against Colombia if Messi hadn't come back to the team. They might squeak through to the knockout stages, but Messi is both a football genius and the anchor holding Argentina back. The article linked above explains it pretty well, but Messi needs the Barça system to perform on that Barça level and Argentina doesn't currently have those players to reproduce that system.

She's only 31 and she's doing that shit to her face already. Creepy.

I'm a fan of the "Before", but she might not have looked like "Before" anymore and that's why she has chosen the "After".

I’m going to be in London on 8/31. Should I try to go to Emirates alone in Spurs gear? Anyone ever done this?

I wouldn't go to a Yankee game in Red Sox attire.

(Or a Dodger game in SF Giants attire... the Dodgers have some serious vato fans that might take you out in the parking lot.)

And the one time I went to college station and watched the Horns finish off the SWC 16-6... before the fake army started pummeling people who rushed the field, including girls, I didn't wear Longhorn gear.

You just have to know your audience. In Argentina the "Big 5" don't have visiting sections anymore at home, or when they go on the road. And for other matches, I don't believe that security will let you in with the Home fans if you are wearing an Away Kit. I would expect the same with Spurs & Arsenal.

Carli Lloyd is the first player to score in six consecutive world cup games. She's a total badass.

And if the ref had swallowed her whistle and given 0 minutes of stoppage time against Thailand, she wouldn't have this record.

I'm glad that she got it, because she is a badass, but the celebration for the 13th goal against Thailand could have been a bit more subdued.

Textbook corner makes it 3-0.  Chile is completely overmatched, obviously.

#2 When half the Chilean team was pulling an FC Barcelona and was complaining to the ref that the ball had gone out of bounds and should have been a corner rather than a goal kick, it was immediately obvious that they understood how woefully overmatched they would be on corner kicks...

    AN' DEY WUZ RIGHT!

Jamie Ertz's slash to the front post and glancing header was as perfectly executed as it was inevitable. That ball was smashed on from such close range and with such power that even a top women's keeper couldn't do anything with it. It wasn't a header from distance, it was a header from 12-15 feet.

#3 And then why mark Carli Lloyd on a set piece?

Then again, Chile has ~2 Tall Players and the USWNT has about 4, plus several Medium Sized Players. The Andean people, with the blood of Spanish & Italian laborers, are not a tall people. They're not Bolivia, but I think that even Ecuador & Peru have taller populations than Chile.

Some relevant numbers ahead of the Colombia-Argentina game:

    Colombia

1 goal in last 8 matches vs Argentina

Scoreless in last 5 matches vs Argentina

495 minute goalless streak vs Argentina

I went to a World Cup Qualifier in 2013 (I think... maybe 2012) between Colombia & Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Messi was at the top of his game, Higuaín was at the top of his game, Agüero was at the top of his game, Falcao was at the top of his game...

    ZERO-fucking-ZERO

Argy back line seems terribly slow.

Other than Tagliafico, I can't think of a single Argie I'd want playing Defense... though I've been out of the country for a while and am not bombarded with noticias de la selección.

If they don't advance, I hope that Messi fucking hangs it up so that the team can finally move on.

I recorded the game, but haven't watched it yet. I'll probably watch some of it tomorrow.

PS- I'm not going to have a fucking Fernet & Coke to drown my sorrows. I'm out of practice and I don't feel like vomiting before bed.

I drank so much of that stuff in Rio haha

Same after I went to Brazil for the first time for a wedding about 15 years ago. I returned to LA and passed a "Brazilian Grocery" and went in and was so excited that they carried that shit.

I had one a few years later and wasn't quite as in love.

Also bought some frozen pão de queijo and not surprisingly, it was nothing like the light, fluffy baked items that arrived on my tables in Rio & São Paulo.

  8. Bolivia is the Guatemala of CONMEBOL.

Martins lying down on the ground for 45 seconds looking for a call because the soccer ball came down and hit the side of his face...

    Wow.

Also, I've never seen a Bolivian striker who was taller than 5'5", so this is something that a 5'9" guy or taller is still flopping like a 5'1" to 5'5" guy.

I'm an extremely white guy from Georgia. I have no dog in the fight. I spent six weeks in Rio during the 2014 World Cup and really enjoyed all of the people from South America while I was there. I root for the CONMEBOL teams against the UEFA teams in the World Cup. Sorry ::shrugs::

I spent the entire 2014 living in Buenos Aires. I had arrived nearly 7 years before, picked up citizenship in July of the previous year, and had an English friend living in Rio who I knew from his time in Buenos Aires about 5 or 6 years prior. I had a FREE place to stay in Rio for the first 2 weeks of the tournament...

But I didn't go. I didn't want to be around Brazilians during the World Cup. I didn't want to be around Chileans, the Colombianas I knew were okay, but I knew that I didn't want to be around Colombian fanaticos in Rio. Uruguayos would have been fine, because they're like cousins or a little brother, but fuck being surrounded by Brazilians during a World Cup... unless it was a bar in Buenos Aires and Germany was raping them 7-1 and you were screaming much louder than normal after each German goal hit the back of the net and you turned around and glared at every fucking Brazilian in the bar sitting there with their mouths open and a look of shock on their faces.

If jerseys were switched and/or refs didn't know they were in Brazil, the Brazilian squad likely wouldn't have made it out of their group. And if they had, they would have finished their match again Colombia with 7 players due to yellow card accumulations.

Patricio Swayze has family connections with Brazil. He's willing to overlook this...

    20180627-The18-Image-Neymar-Roll-GIF.gif

...for the good of the Dark Side. (He hates "the force".) But Brazil has 5 Wold Cup trophies, which their fans will remind you of whenever you take joy in them losing.

My Argentine connection is manufactured, but is permanent (you can't renounce Argie citizenship). Idogg53 has Argie blood coursing through his veins and has familia argentina that he visits as often as he can. Although I don't hate chilenos with a passion, like most Argies I've ever known, I pull for any threat to the albiceleste to lose... though I want the squads with Argie managers to go farther than those without. (Recently 6 of the 10 CONMEBOL clubs had Argie managers, because they're the best*...)

*Most of CONMEBOL hates Argentines because of their arrogance and their insistence that they are not "Latin Americans" so much as "Europeans who live on the American continent**.

**At least in Argentina, they are taught that there are SIX continents: America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, Antarctica. ("America" is one continent.)

Now your white ass from Georgia is up to speed with the Cliff's Notes version of why some would take offense at a person saying that they liked ALL of the teams in CONMEBOL.

PD- (Spanish for "PS") I left out the political tensions between Venezuela & Colombia, Colombia & Ecuador, Bolivia & Chile, Chile & Argentina, Brazil & Argentina, Paraguay & Argentina/Uruguay/Brazil, Argentina & Venezuela (after their love affair), Paraguay & Venezuela, Peru & Bolivia... 😂

Brazil just punked Australia on that goal.

I watched that play. Thought it was awesome to see the nutmeg lead to the pass to the winger and then a cross to a striker who knew how to COME TO THE BALL and didn't use any shirt tugging or hand on shoulders to get to the ball and head it in. Great lessons:

    1) How to nutmeg
    2) How to attack the ball in the box
    3) How NOT to stand there as a defender and expect the ball to come to you

I was recording the match and had to go do some stuff at 2-0. Came back and it was 2-3 and was a little shocked. Didn't think that the Aussies were anywhere close to the same level as the Brazilians from the 5 to 7 minutes I saw in the 1st Half.

This first clip was of a through pass to Sebastian Soto where he lets the Nigerian keeper slide past him before he chips the ball into the goal with the outside of his right foot.

    https://streamable.com/bkhkm

I didn't watch this game, but I realized that he tried to do the exact same thing against Ecuador, because he had had success against the Nigerian keeper. I commented at the time that:

    1) He should have kicked it with his LEFT foot and...
    2) Josh Sargent would have scored in that instance.

The reason that he scored the first time, but did't the second was because the Ecuadorean keeper didn't suck. He didn't slide past Soto and then leave an open goal. He went AT Soto and slid on his side TOWARD Soto and the ball. Soto's weak attempt to chip the ball was smothered by a keeper who knew how to play the position.

It would have been better for the team if Soto had gotten stuffed by the Nigerian keeper (we were already up 1-0 at the time) and he had learned that you can't weakly chip a ball with the outside of your foot when the opposing keeper is right on you. A stronger chip with the left foot, which would have been further from the keeper and should have been easier to create more lift, was the right move vs Ecuador, but it didn't happen.

Anyway, the article starts with Weah and covers every player*.

    *Supposedly, I just started reading.
