I will probably be at one of them.  Maybe both if work doesn't interfere.  I guess I should see about buying some tickets.

I've been looking at both a smart trainer and a peloton.  While the peloton is obviously more expensive I am intrigued by the non-cycling workouts available.

When looking at smart trainers, I've been eyeballing the Wahoo Kickr and going the Zwift route since biking is my primary hobby.

What smart trainer do you have and how do you like Zwift?

  3. There was just something about a Saturday night game on ESPN when the game was in Austin or Baton Rouge or wherever in Texas or the southeast that having Ron Franklin on the call made the game seem like a big game whether it actually was or not.   I don't think any of the ESPN guys since have added to the game in the way Ron Franklin did in my opinion.

    RIP.

  4. Did a search and did not see this posted anywhere, but I guess past Tide qb Jay Barker took the loss hard.

Jay Barker arrested after attempting to hit estranged wife with car

    Quote

Former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker was arrested early Saturday morning on a felony assault charge after he allegedly tried to hit his estranged wife with a car.

Barker was arrested by the Davidson County (Tennessee) Sheriff's Office just after 4 a.m. on Saturday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to the Tennessean, Barker tried to hit his wife, country singer Sara Evans, and another person with his car after a party early Saturday morning.

    From The Tennesseean:

Documents on file with Metro Nashville General Sessions Court said the people in the vehicle were leaving a party around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. As they pulled into the driveway of a nearby home, Barker allegedly reversed his vehicle “at a high rate of speed attempting to hit them, but missed,” according to the arrest affidavit.

The vehicle's occupants contacted police after Barker drove away from the home, the affidavit states. Police made contact with Barker when he later drove by the house.

According to Al.com, Evans filed for divorce from Barker in August and cited "inappropriate marital conduct" after they separated in April. The couple has been married for 12 years and it's the second marriage for both Evans and Barker.

Barker, 49, is a longtime Birmingham radio host and sports talk personality. He was the quarterback for the Crimson Tide when Alabama won the national title in 1992 after going 13-0.

Barker was 132-of-243 passing for 1,614 yards and seven touchdowns and nine interceptions that season. He finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1994 after going 139-of-226 passing for 1,996 yards and 14 TDs and five interceptions. He was behind Rashaan Salaam, Ki-Jana Carter, Steve McNair and Kerry Collins in the voting and just ahead of Warren Sapp.

Barker was taken in the fifth round of the 1995 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers but never played in an NFL game.

  6. If this story is accurate, then something needs to be changed at the Athletic Performance Center.  Or at least not have two of your top golfers doing a relay running event.

Each Coody twin breaks an arm in a non-golfing accident

    Quote

Pierceson and Parker Coody might be taking this identical twins thing a bit too far. The 21-year-old star senior golfers at the University of Texas are both expected to miss the start of the spring college season after each broke a bone in his right arm in a fluke non-golf accident.

First reported by GolfChannel.com, the brothers were competing in a post-workout relay race at UT’s indoor Athletic Performance Center earlier this month. As they crossed the finish line, both brothers crashed into a padded cement wall, their arms bracing for the impact. However, as it turned out, each one broke a bone in his right arm when hitting the wall, both suffering radial-head fractures, according to GolfChannel.com, just below the right elbow.

"For us to be literally in slings together, doing physical rehab together every day, it's kind of ironically funny," Pierceson, the No. 2 golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and the PGA Tour U ranking, and a member of the U.S. Walker Cup team last spring, told GolfChannel.com.

Indeed, the brothers, who turn 22 on Jan. 7, are trying to get healed back home in Plano, Texas, in hopes of missing as little of the spring schedule as possible. The recovery from the injuries is likely to take eight to 12 weeks, with neither brother expected to be able to hit balls until mid-January at the earliest. Texas coach John Fields told Golf Digest that they are progressing well and currently on track to compete mid-spring.

The Longhorns open the spring portion of the 2021-22 season at the Southwestern Invitational in California on Jan. 24-26 followed by the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii on Feb. 3-5. The team’s third spring event isn’t until late February.

Pierceson finished the fall semester with a 72.0 average, playing in three events with a top finish of T-11 at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational. Parker, 68th in the OWGR, also played three times, posting a 72.67 average with a sixth-place showing at the Maridoe Collegiate.

Texas closed out the fall ranked eighth in the Golfstat ranking and has a talented roster that includes two-time U.S. Walker Cupper Cole Hammer and U.S. Amateur semifinalist Travis Vick.

"I told the guys at the beginning of the year that COVID would challenge us in different ways, on and off the course," Fields said. "Patience, perseverance and flexibility would be our best friend. This is just another in a series of curve balls."

My image of John Madden was shaped differently after I read a Sports Illustrated article, I guess some time in the late 70's or early 80's.  After reading that article, I never saw him the same again... and among the change was he wasn't first and foremost a football figure.  He became in essence a saint.

The article/incident I'm referring to most old-timers will know well... a 1979 preseason game, Oakland vs. New England, and the hit Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley got by Jack Tatum while going for a pass.  Although the hit was legal at the time, it was particularly viscous and Stingley ended up compacting his spine and being paralyzed for the rest of his life (which eventually would lead to his death in 2007).  Stingley was taken to an Oakland hospital while the entire Patriot team got on a plane home; only a Patriots' staffer stayed behind.

Madden went through the postgame rituals and cleanup, and then it dawned on him: "I wonder how that Stingley kid is?"  He finds out that indeed he was doing terribly, and was in Castro Valley Hospital.  So what does Madden do?  Makes a beeline for the hospital, arrives, finds out where he is, finds out that he's about to go into emergency surgery.  And then what does he do?  Stays with him and comforts him up until he gets wheeled in.  Eventualy, Madden realized that he was the only person to visit Stingley at that moment, so what does he do?  He calls the airport and demands that the Patriots turn their plane, which was about to taxi to the runway, back to the gate and get to the hospital (several Patriots players did eventually go over).

And if that wasn't enough, while Stingley recovered in Oakland over several weeks, Madden went to visit him regularly, when he was back in Oakland after games (he even offered his house for his wife to stay in for free while he recovered, but she graciously declined, wanting to be at the hospital with Stingley... nevertheless, the Maddens had her over to dinner regularly during that time, and Mrs. Madden would frequently join her at the hospital - when John was unable to due to his job.

John Madden - sincerely and honestly concerned for the welfare of a player when no one would ever have blinked if he didn't.  Stingley never forgot that moment, and it changed his life - he said that he might have come out of the incident a much more bitter man, but for seeing the compassion and care of Madden, it deeply affected him.  They remained close friends until Stingley's death.

How do I know all of this?  Because the article was essentially an interview by Stingley, who, through several bouts of tears, said that he couldn't believe the decency of this man, and how he would always treasure how Madden cared for him, put him first.  He never forgot it either, and always spoke so lovingly of Madden it was heartwarming.

Like Stingley, that made such an impression on me of the heart of John Madden that football seemed ludicrous by comparison.  John Madden was almost, if not quite, my hero from that time.  And he also proved that he was much, much bigger than a silly game of football.

You probably read this article from September of 1983.

Hey, wait a minute! I want to talk!

After reading that article, I take two things away:  one, Madden was so much more than a coach or commentator (which, after reading various articles about him over the year I already knew) and, two, the stark difference in writing by journalists from 40 years ago versus today.  I hate that I cannot find longform writing like this article very often anymore.

Thank you, was trying not to look up Michael SImon. Yeah he would be fun to be with and I did see him and Fieri together previously a long while back, but I think Simon is only on the Cooking Network now (could easily be wrong).

Michael Symon is constantly on Beat Bobby Flay as a judge.  Probably a judge on some of the other competition shows as well.

The Food Network has given him his own show that debuted about a week ago.  Throwdown With Michael Symon has Symon showing up and facing off with a chef over that chef's signature dish.  I've watched the first few episodes and it is okay so far.  One of the first episodes was a throwdown over khachpauri, which I had never heard of.

  10. Florida man with drugs around penis denies they are his

    Quote

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Florida authorities said they found cocaine and methamphetamine wrapped around a man’s penis during a traffic stop, but the man denied the drugs were his.

Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies said they stopped a vehicle driving without its lights on at 4 a.m. last Saturday. WFLA-TV reports the driver was arrested on charges of DUI and marijuana possession.

Authorities said they found a gun under the passenger’s seat while searching the car and discovered the drugs while searching the passenger.

The man said the drugs were not his, but didn’t say who the drugs belonged to, according to the arrest report.

  11. A couple of Reba McEntire songs seem ripe for this treatment:  Fancy and The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

Well, Fancy was originally a Bobbie Gentry song but I am guessing most people associate it with Reba.

There is already a musical drama movie The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia with a different plot than the song that Reba did.  Well, a different plot than the Vicki Lawrence song that Reba covered.  The movie has a fairly loaded cast:  Dennis Quaid, Mark Hamill, Kristy McNichol, Barry Corbin.

Given the subject matter of these two songs, I would think Hollywood would jump all over the chance to make them into something.

For those old enough, it is basically the Columbia House business model.  Sign up and each month you get an email saying what is in the next box.  Change, swap, or decline by the 5th of the month.  Box is then shipped to you.  This company will probably make a fortune off of everyone that forgets to respond to the email.

Chinese scientists make eco-friendly plastic from salmon sperm

    Quote

A new eco-friendly plastic made from salmon sperm has been invented by scientists in China.

Two short strands of DNA from the sperm were combined with a chemical from vegetable oil that binds them together. What this creates is a squishy material known as hydrogel.

From here the gel is then moulded into different shapes and freeze-dried to remove the moisture, which makes it solidify. Researchers have already created a cup, puzzle pieces and a DNA molecule from the eco-friendly plastic.

Though the team of Chinese scientists created their raw materials from salmon sperm, DNA carries the genetic code for every living thing on Earth. A study from 2015 estimates that there are around 50 billion tonnes of DNA on the planet.

That means we could technically make the plastic out of other sustainable sources such as waste material from crops, algae or bacteria.

Is this plastic better than other alternatives?

Plastic is a big problem for the environment as it is made from petrochemicals that require a lot of heat and toxic substances to manufacture. It also takes centuries to break down and very little is recycled - with most ending up incinerated or sent to landfill.

For that reason, a lot of research has been done to find alternatives which are less damaging to our natural environment.

Biodegradable plastics have already been created using materials like cornstarch and algae, but they require a lot of energy to make and can be difficult to recycle.

Dayong Yang and his team at Tianjin University wanted to create a material that solved these problems.

The creation of DNA-based plastic produces 97 per cent fewer carbon emissions than polystyrene plastics, they say. Dipping items created from the material into water turns them back into a gel that can be reformed into new objects meaning it is easy to recycle too. The plastic can be broken down by DNA digesting enzymes if it is no longer needed.

But the new material does have some limitations.

The fact that it can be recycled using water alone means that it would need to be kept dry. While waterproof coatings could be added, this would make it more difficult to recycle.

It could, however, be used for items like electronics that need to be kept dry anyway and some forms of packaging, the researchers believe.
