  1. Humanity faces ‘collective suicide’ over climate crisis, warns UN chief | Climate crisis | The Guardian
  2. House I bought here had no AC installed. Got the you don't need it from some, some who smiled with that 'good luck' smile. Wanted the house/area bad enough to not care. The first summer was fine. Maybe about one week where I would have enjoyed AC, but still nothing any Texan couldn't deal with. Last summer's heat wave changed my mind on that and AC was finally installed last November. And of course, we've had a typical PNW moderate summer this year (so far). No serious fires/smoke near us so far this year, either, unlike during the heat wave of last year. anyway, yeah. If you do move, never trust the 'you usually don't need it' crowd. You do.
  3. Edit: I'm a poor reader. This year has so far been moderate with cooling temps at night on the few 'high' days that most on this thread would laugh/cry at.
  4. Found this on reddit. Climate Foundation: Marine Permaculture - Climate Foundation Had a follow up comment with this link: GreenWave
  5. Amid climate change and conflict, more resilient food systems a must, report shows | CU Boulder Today | University of Colorado Boulder The idea of 'more resilient food systems' is interesting to me, and I'm curious as to what that looks like.
  6. I'm staying in the States. In terms of this discussion, I don't see New Zealand discussed as much now and I get kind of curious as to why that is. Way back when I fantasized about leaving I know they had a tech worker shortage and it was a way to get in. English speaking and from all the pictures (I have never been) it sure seems like a gorgeous place. Mountains and beaches. Seemed to handle Covid well. And my right wing Father during the Cold War days used to tell me that was the safest place to be in terms of nuclear war....
  7. I can't answer from first person experience, but can tell you it definitely was hard on my kids when I moved them out here. Kids up to an age/point are oblivious to things like 'it's too hot' or politics. And they don't care about your epic scenery. Mine were 10 and 8 during the move. The 10-year-old took it pretty hard. Due to timing, we also left after the first semester of his 5th grade year. I was not going to move them after Middle School started for them. Those first few months were rough, and then just as things were getting a bit better, Covid happened and the isolation got bad. Remote schooling was not good for them, either. That said, things got better. They've both told us they're happy with the decision. But it took time to get there. The other thing that helps is happier parents are better parents, imo. So, while they didn't understand all our reasons, they didn't get 'grumpy Dad' anywhere close to what they got in Texas.
  8. Aware of their origin. At some point when a band relocates to Austin the city tends to claim them. https://www.statesman.com/story/entertainment/music/2021/09/10/austin-band-heartless-bastards-delivers-career-best-album/5759387001/
  9. This. Also, pretty sure the SC is going to just pick the next president ruler for us anyway.
  10. Also, this: Texas is the second-worst state to live in, according to report (expressnews.com) Unfortunately, this as well: England braces for 40C temperatures as experts warn thousands could die | UK weather | The Guardian As Europe bakes in heatwave, wildfires rage from Portugal to Croatia | Reuters Can't outrun climate change.
  11. Got to correct myself a bit on the live music. It's not Austin, but there are smaller venues with shows that are fine for what they are. Just may not be every night of the week. Last night I saw the Heartless Bastards (hey, an Austin band) and it was a great show. The other thing about any live music you find is its always going to be easy to get to. You should review Events in Bend | The Source Weekly - Bend, Oregon (bendsource.com) and if that has enough for you, well there you have it.

  13. Really been enjoying the vibe of Wiz Khalifa's "Kush and OJ" and Mac Miller's "K.I.D.S" and "Best Day Ever." This is apparently the hip hop era I just wasn't tuned into. Love that laid back vibe with cool sounding production quality. Think I'll explore both of these artists' entire catalog.
  14. Saw them in 2014 (or 2015?) in Cedar Park with Alice Cooper during their 'retirement tour.' It was a great, fun show. Seems they should have stayed retired.
  15. Fox is going to get that Doctor killed. And it isn't the first time.
  16. pretty much this. the campiness was turned up so high, but then you'd get random almost horror movie stuff with the Bale character. When Korg started telling the first tale of Thor and the Guardians, I kept waiting for some moment like Thor waking up and the camp being turned back down to reasonable levels. I found Ragnarok much more fun, personally. The goats were a highlight. Dialogue quite often was really bad. Even if it was bad on purpose or for the sake of camp.
  17. Lots of truth there. The Pickup/SUV with bike rack is just about a necessity, though. The trails here are fantastic. Outdoor playground is one of the main perks. Edit: Meant to add "ball caps" to your list, b/c nobody gets good haircuts here. And hoodies b/c you can wear them 9 months out of the year. Wife calls it the "Bend Bro" look.
  18. I may post too much on these things, and its all opinion, but I'm going to give you some Bend cons in your list since I can sing the praises all day long. Live music--> I have had some fun here and there, but what you find here will be the 'biggest' touring bands you get. I had fun with some hardcore punk a few months back, but you're driving to Portland otherwise (a little over 3 hours). Most of Bend really shuts down early. Like 8-10 pm. So if you're still active in Austin's scene, you will miss that. "wifi"-->depends on the speeds you want, but anything over 25-30mb you're looking at Bend Broadband which has a monopoly here and gets complaints all the time. They also are sneaky bastards who will up your bill while you're not paying attention. Then you get to call in and go through hell trying to get it back to what it was. I've only had one 'serious' outage that interrupted my work day, but I read all the time about other people having to deal with them. Austin had many more choices and options. "cost"-->um, yeah. We got lucky and bought our home right as Covid was shutting everything down. I (and many) prefer the West side of Bend to the East side for various reasons. I am not surly elite so in just one year my home went up to where I wouldn't afford it now. In two years even more so. Groceries are definitely higher here, imo. And fuel, although not as bad as California in gas prices (but what is). No sales tax, though, which is wild when you experience it the first few times. And property taxes are more than reasonable. Personal Income tax though, so maybe that's all a wash, depending on your situation. weather-->I love the four seasons. It's great. However, last summer for about a week the smoke from fires in Oregon and California got bad, and apparently this happens for at least a few days most years. Knock on wood hasn't happened yet this year. Last year, Christmas Day looked like we lived in a snow globe. My first White Christmas ever. Loved it. The rest of your list, yeah, it's heaven.
  19. Right, but the difference is the rural doesn't get to dominate the urban in the PNW. The State will most likely align with what you believe, even if the small-town yokels do not. Legal weed, abortion, and right to die (in Oregon). We both know how that goes in red states. So, you and Al aren't wrong in that rural MAGA is all over. But it doesn't impact you here like it does in a red state, imo.
