Outside of learning more about their tech, what exactly do you earn in $/mo in running a node? I’m reading online about people estimating $1/mo assuming an average PC/GPU.

"Running a node" can range in sophistication from installing their software on a PC that you run in the background while you use the PC for other things, to building dedicated (racks of) PCs with purpose built hardware specs.

A little over a month ago I simply downloaded the Edge Node software onto a laptop that I use sporadically to give it a test.  I have been running the laptop during the day (I shut it down over night).  This laptop is nothing fancy (it's *not* a gaming rig with NVIDIA CUDA enabled GPU).  It's generating around  0.4 TFUEL a day.  I doubt this covers the cost of electricity, but maybe - I'm not sure how much the laptop is drawing to be honest.

A few weeks ago, I grabbed a refurbished PC off amazon with an NVIDIA CUDA supported GPU for just a little more than what the graphics card would have cost by itself.  I set it up as my new email/internets browsing machine (I needed to replace my old machine anyway) and keep it running 24/7.  It's earning around 1.2 TFUEL per day since May 1 (when they started rolling out 3D rendering jobs).

I learned just this morning that if you stake 10,000 TFUEL on your Edge Node, supposedly you will get 4x more jobs (and consequently, TFUEL).  I have not tested that out.

What I can say is that the Edge Node software is pretty much dummy proof easy to install and run (no real configuration options/issues) and it works seemlessly in the background while you use your PC like you normally would.  Essentially, there is zero reason not to run it if you are working on a computer all day anyway.

May 1st, 2024 - Theta Network, the leading blockchain decentralized cloud for AI, media and entertainment, is excited to announce the launch of Theta EdgeCloud, the first hybrid computing platform for AI, video and rendering applications.

Theta's new hybrid cloud-edge computing platform arrives at a critical point, driven by three major industry trends: the widespread adoption of AI across various sectors, forecasted to grow tenfold by 2030; the exponential rise in global video and 3D rendering demand, notably for high-resolution content; and the increasing necessity for modular infrastructure compute services to manage the surge in computation data.

Theta EdgeCloud harnesses the untapped potential of thousands of distributed CPU and GPU nodes worldwide, alongside a sophisticated cloud-based architecture. By optimizing the price-to-performance ratio across these nodes, Theta aims to democratize access to high-performance computing resources, fostering innovation and efficiency across multiple industries and creative endeavors.

EdgeCloud is one of the largest hybrid edge-cloud compute networks in the world, bridging high-performance cloud-based Nvidia A100, V100 and T4 GPUs from partners like Google Cloud and Theta’s decentralized network of 10,000+ global edge nodes. Theta’s Edge Network comprises one of the largest clusters of distributed GPU computing power in the world today. High-performance GPUs, including Nvidia 3090s to 4090s (~1000 nodes), deliver 36,392 TFLOPS; medium-tier GPUs (~2000 nodes) deliver 28,145 TFLOPS; and low-end GPUs (~7000 nodes) deliver an additional 13,002 TFLOPS. This amounts to a total of approximately 77,538 TFLOPS or about 80 PetaFLOPS today, roughly equivalent to 250 NVIDIA A100s, always available.

“The overall market for computing services is expected to grow significantly over the next decade, driven by AI applications across a number of industries. Enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services reached nearly $74 billion in 2023, with generative AI clearly being one of the main drivers. We’re excited to launch the first hybrid cloud-edge AI computing platform that’s powered by one of the largest distributed GPU networks and the leading Web3 community for AI, media, and entertainment,” said Mitch Liu, co-founder and CEO of Theta Network.

The First Hybrid Edge Cloud AI Network at Global Scale

EdgeCloud delivers a global-scale edge network and a cloud-based GPU infrastructure necessary for running today’s largest AI models. While chatbots like ChatGPT and other large language models are compute-intensive, new generative AI models such as text-to-video, text-to-3D, and sketch-to-3D require 10-100x the amount of computational power. The combined GPU compute power of EdgeCloud is sufficient to run more than 300-1000+ AI models concurrently, arguably holding the keys to the world’s most valuable and disruptive asset: global GPU compute.

I've been running the Theta Edge Node software on a couple of PCs for a few weeks now.  It's pretty cool tech.

...  Never considered that risk exposure?

Or maybe that's the moral hazard that comes with FDIC/fedgov bailouts/bailins.  Privatized profits when risks pay off, socialized losses when they don't.

  5. First Republic has fallen.  FDIC press release:

Fulton Bank, N.A. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania Assumes Substantially All Deposits of Republic First Bank, Philadelphia

WASHINGTON — Philadelphia-based Republic First Bank (doing business as Republic Bank) was closed today by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC entered into an agreement with Fulton Bank, National Association of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to assume substantially all of the deposits and purchase substantially all of the assets of Republic Bank.

Republic Bank’s 32 branches in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York will reopen as branches of Fulton Bank on Saturday (for branches with normal Saturday hours) or on Monday during normal business hours. This evening and over the weekend, depositors of Republic Bank can access their money by writing checks or using ATM or debit cards. Checks drawn on Republic Bank will continue to be processed and loan customers should continue to make their payments as usual.

Depositors of Republic Bank will become depositors of Fulton Bank so customers do not need to change their banking relationship in order to retain their deposit insurance coverage. Customers of Republic Bank should continue to use their existing branches until they receive notice from Fulton Bank that it has completed systems changes that will allow its branch offices to process their accounts as well.

Customers with questions about Fulton Bank’s acquisition of Republic Bank may call the FDIC toll-free at 1-877-467-0178. The FDIC’s Call Center will be open this evening until 9 p.m. Eastern Time (ET); on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET; on Sunday from noon to 6:00 p.m. ET; on Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET; and thereafter from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. Interested parties may also visit the FDIC’s website.

As of January 31, 2024, Republic Bank had approximately $6 billion in total assets and $4 billion in total deposits.  The FDIC estimates that the cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) related to the failure of Republic Bank will be $667 million. The FDIC determined that compared to other alternatives, Fulton Bank’s acquisition of Republic Bank is the least costly resolution for the DIF, an insurance fund created by Congress in 1933 and managed by the FDIC to protect the deposits at the nation’s banks.  Republic Bank is the first U.S. bank failure this year; the last failure was Citizens Bank, Sac City, Iowa on November 3, 2023.

The bank attempted to raise $125 million in additional capital from investors last year — an effort that launched on the same day that Silicon Valley Bank failed — but the deal fell apart only months later.

A subsequent capital infusion came together last fall amid reports that the FDIC was seeking a buyer for the troubled bank. But that capital raise also ultimately fell apart.

... Should the president be directly consulted on monetary policy if otherwise be able to put their thumb on the scale? ...

Let gold compete with the Fed's fiat as unpegged legal tender (no capital gains or sales taxes and let it have full legal tender status in parallel with the USD at market rates) and that wouldn't matter.  Short of that, the answer is obviously fuck no.

The BRICS bloc is considering several options in the design of an inter-member economic settlement system. In an interview with TV BRICS, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the international bloc, integrated by Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia, was mulling the use of stablecoins and other digital currencies as part of this new payment network.

^ They don't specifically mention Tether, but it's the only big stablecoin outside of the USA's jurisdiction right now, so it's safe bet that it's the one they are considering.  It's a bit of a pivot as Russia had been talking (last year) about basing/anchoring a BRICS currency with gold.  Of course, they could be building their own stablecoin - even one anchored to gold instead of any national currency(ies).

I didn’t really understand why 31, 32, 33 were seemingly right next to each other but operated as independent separate entities.

    Spoiler

It wasn't explicitly explained.  The triad vaults were designed to be a breeding farm for the cryogenically frozen denizens of vault 31.  I can only guess that Budd designed it this way to have a backup vault if one of the vaults had a problem (which did actually happen in vault 32).  Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
