When we were in Tuscaloosa we learned that 60% of Alabama's students come from out of state and ran into several students who were Texas fans. They are one of several schools in the South that offer Texas kids in-state tuition.

This was a few years ago now, but Bama offered my son full out of state tuition scholarship (no room and board) based solely on his 34 ACT score. He was all but set to go, and we had placed deposits for a dorm and visited three times, until Texas offered acceptance to MCCombs (no scholarship/financial aid at all) in March of that spring, so he ended up staying here. Several of his classmates took them up on it.

You seem to have forgotten that we have a fucking DISASTER SCIENTIST on the Council and ready to act. Nothing to worry about.

  3. To be clear, I don't have any issue with the people hired.

My issue is how they were hired, the lack of transparency of exactly what they are doing and how they are billing it, and the absolute blatant skirting of the legal process to spend City money and hire employees, consultants and consulting firms.

Pretty sure he's asking why is it nepotism.

Did you just not read the article?

It is not surprising that people with prior City Hall experience and long histories with the two men currently ruling the second and third floors of that building were brought back into the fold during a tumultuous time for the city of Austin's bureaucratic machine. In a statement, Garza said as much.

What are they trying obfuscate?  It doesn't appear that conspiracy mastermind Watson went to much length to hide anything.

Surely you must realize that terrible article is full of mischaracterizations and fully rooted in preserving a status quo that provides most of the grist for the previous 45 pages of this thread?

The reality of maneuvering in a bureaucracy requires exploiting the system (without breaking the law) to get pretty much anything done, particularly quickly (and not picking on CofA government alone here, my wife works for big tech now and it's remarkably similar).  Watson was hired to do just that.

Nothing says "Let's clean up the mess made by the previous leadership" by avoiding the adopted processes of the city.

"Bringing them on board through subcontracts rather than initiating new contracts, which would have required Council approval, "afforded us with the mechanism for bringing Laura and Joe on to assist me in acting quickly and decisively,""

You can bitch all you want about bureaucracy but that is exactly what City government is, and it is that way for a for a reason; to give transparency to the citizens. You don't just get to pick and choose which rules/processes/laws that you deem to be fit your needs and skirt the ones you don't agree with.

By hiding it and doing it under the cover of darkness, it makes them look as guilty as the people they replaced.

Not sure if you're intending to promote the position of the Chronicle, but this kind of thing validates my vote for Watson.

The council and it's core constituencies have allowed (I don't think anyone directed it, rather it's grown organically and seen in quite a few other cities) a bureaucracy to grow that spends more time self-perpetuating or protecting legacy interest groups than in defining what policy adjustments it needs to make to meet the challenges of tomorrow ( @Bozo_Casanova would probably jest "or meet the challenges of 2015").  In the grand scheme of things I'd far prefer hiring a couple of experienced professionals whose acumen and experience demands a premium over a government salary and whose status as contractors allows them to be fired without cause.  Why the fuck would I (as Watson/Garza) want to give those ten council morons the potential to veto hiring two consultants lacking any decision making authority at all?

I am far less concerned about the costs/"salaries" as I am that they are trying to obfuscate and hide the process and skirt the legal means to hire people. Sorta like the council did with hiring of Cronk.

  7. Teed off at Lions at 4 today. I was 5 over through 14 (1 under on the back nine) before getting drenched and ending the round on 15.

I love the rain but of course it had to ruin a pretty good round for me. Damnit.

Laugh if you will, but a well-made, and acted, movie about people and their relationships is a nice change from a bunch of men in tights and a cape throwing buildings around or endless car chases and heads exploding.

What does a "well-made, and acted movie" have to do with a Hallmark movie?

My zoysia has held up exceptionally well. I have a mix of bermuda and augustine in some places. SA is a cancer on society and needs to be smote. The bermuda is in struggle mode. So at least based on my experience ZP is the way to go and pretty resilient. I will resod the whole place with Z after the pool install ruins my whole shit.

I think I have zoysia, but it's essentially straw at this point.  If it comes back it needs to be tested for performance enhancing drugs.

  10. Don't forget that firing him is not just a hit on the expense side. It will hammer the income side as well.

When they fire fisher and start the rebuild, that newly expanded stadium will be at 50% capacity and no one will be buying the $16 "Beat LSU" souvenir cups and $30 "We Control the Tide" t shirts.

25% due up front and the rest paid out annually until 2031.

This is from the original so I'd expect the extension to be similar.

OK, I was mis-reading your post. I thought you were saying the total payout was only $21M. Now I see you were talking about only what was due right now.

Technically it's only $21 million now and $7.1 million every year (based on last years numbers). So it's cheaper now tham the full $75 but is any other attainable coach worth $25-30 million with buyouts and $15 million per year not including assistants?

My dream is that they pull the trigger strike out on every name out there and then hire Mark Stoops on a 7 year $50 million deal.

I am pretty sure this is not accurate. It's like $78M now and goes down by $9.5M per year.

    1) Elko is a good coach but the ACC is straight-up trash right now especially with Clemson starting to struggle. These are Elko's wins: Temple, Northwestern, NC A&T, Virginia, Miami, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, UCF, and Clemson.

Elko's best win last year was against a 9-5 UCF team. Elko seems like a huge risk based on the ACC being a complete dumpster fire.

    2) Klieman does not seem like a stylistic fit at aggy or with Texas recruits.

I mean, which School would ever go after a flashy record without actually digging into the background or history behind it, and follow that by grossly overpaying that person with an extended contract with no buyout clause?
