  1. Warren played pretty well under Strong and looked very promising.  Then, he got banged up and then Herman came in and they didn't mesh.  I think even when Herman was only giving him 3 carries a game, he was around 4 ypc, which x3 in MENSA apparently doesn't equal a first down.

He is the type of back that needs a good 8-10 carries to get in a groove.  He definitely had some questionable effort plays in his few carries near the end, but it's unclear if that was him having some mental hurdle to get over regarding an injury, pouting about Herman not playing him, a shit O-line, or a mix of the above.  Herman chose not to use him and he took it personally.  Generally labeling him as a shitty player is inaccurate.

That said, I think Herman and Warren learned from last year.  I am hopeful Herman doesn't abandon the run game (with RBs) too soon in games this year, and I believe Warren does need some coaching up to improve how he runs in traffic.

  2. "...Butkus was the Ray Lewis of his era, feared by everyone. Well, everyone except Greene apparently. Gary Pomerantz describes what happens in his book Their Life's Work.

Chicago linebacker Dick Butkus, blocking for punt returner Gayle Sayers, blindsided the oncoming Greenwood, knocking him unconscious near the Steelers' bench. Butkus stood over the fallen rookie like Ali stood over Liston. Onto the field stepped Greene. Eye-to-eye with Butkis, Greene threatened him and spat in his face. "Butkus was standing there with this [spit] thing hanging down his face mask," Mansfield said. Mansfield thought, This is going to be the greatest fight in the history of the NFL! But Butkus turned and walked away. Decades later, Mansfield said, "That was the beginning of the end of the Pittsburgh Steelers' problems."

So you must understand when it was said that teams feared the Steel Curtain defense, they meant that they were actually scared. Ernie Holmes stated that during the course of Super Bowl IX that Minnesota Vikings center Mick Tinglehoff was literally trembling (Holmes derisively referred to him as "Ticklehoff"). And who can blame him facing Holmes, Jack Lambert and Greene.

Examples are numerous. In the America's Game program on the 1975 Steelers Greene is shown grabbing a Cleveland Browns offensive lineman by the shoulder and kicking him in the groin. In a 1977 playoff game in Mile High Stadium in Denver, he knocks a Broncos offensive lineman who has been holding him out of the game with a punch to the gut. ESPN's Tom Jackson describes another incident when Greene moved toward the Denver bench in anger and the whole Broncos team recoiled in fear..."

•Who will be Texas' best player next year?

Kerwin Roach- senior leader, best all-around player. If he can shoot he's All Big XII material. A healthy Andrew Jones would be our best player by a mile, but that's not happening.

•Who will be Texas' best player in the last three minutes of the game?

Matt Coleman- already shown that he likes the big moments and wants the ball in late-game situations. Embraces the moment. We want the ball in his hands.

•Of the returning players, who will have made the greatest improvement?

Jericho Sims- Ridiculous athlete with such a lack of refined skill and basketball acumen as a freshman, his room for improvement is by far the highest on the team. He should be averaging 8+ and 8+ with 2 blocks if he can stay out of foul trouble. Sky is the limit as a defender/rebounder.

Also, DO had fucking better be much improved. He already has plenty of skill, so for him it's more about showing it during games and making better decisions.

•How many (and who) of the new players will have significant playing time?

We aren't going to rely on any of them- the heavy lifting will be done by returning players such as DO, Coleman, and Roach. Long will get minutes, and i suspect that Hepa will be next in line for minutes, but i doubt that any of them are consistently impactful.

•How will B12 coaches attack and defend this Texas team?

Defensively- dare us to shoot until we prove we can shoot. force us to settle for jump shots, and keep Sims off the offensive glass. force guys to shoot off the dribble. pack it in inside the 3-point line, or just play zone.

Offensively- Go at Sims and get him in foul trouble early. After that play inside-out. We will be extremely weak defensively in the post after Sims, and we are depending on him to have made great strides defensively, at least up to par with a Jarrett Allen type of player. Asking him to be Bamba or Ibeh is too much. I predict that this team will give up the highest opp FG% during Shaka's time here, barring outstanding individual defensive efforts from multiple guards/wings.

Definitely need a good showing from the DO/Hepa/Hayes/Hamm combo each game... and since only DO has any college gameplay experience, he'll need to carry a good part of that load and focus on his fundamentals rather than his cornrows

Why rely on the images?  They didn't hold the two ropes up in court?

most likely cops didn't grab the ropes and they were noticed in the photos by someone later down the line who understood their possible relevance (after they were gone)…

also possible the ropes weren't a close match and weren't procured for that reason.

On an different note, I vaguely recall back when they first nabbed this kid that there may have been a reference about him having some psychological diagnoses... I assume the option of insanity / not being able to form the requisite intent was considered and/or pursued by his defense team... so, I wonder what good could come from putting him on the stand... especially if he is the type who acts cocky or laughs when nervous (which jurors are likely to interpret as guilt even if he's innocent).  I assume he was insistent on testifying regardless of advice of his counsel.

The amount of circumstantial evidence is pretty damning if the main alibis are "I found it in a dumpster" and "those just coincidentally look like my glasses, bike, etc..."  I was thinking his alibi was going to be stumbling upon the body and stuff shortly after the assault/murder.

  5. Go have a beer at the Brazen Head.

There's a pub, O'Neill's, a few block SW of Trinity Univ that has a very good cafeteria on the bottom floor.

chill for a 1/2 hour at St. Stephen's Green and people watch.

Guinness Storehouse is a waste of time unless you like lines and the kitschy theme park vibe... instead grab a Guinness up the Road at Brazen Head or maybe at the Temple Bar.  Do a distillery tour instead.

I forgot the name of the really good chipper (fish and chips joint) I hit in Guinness but I am certain you can find it.

If your feet start hurting, hop on one of those Green tourist buses and get off someplace that peaks your interest.

There's the Irish National Museum just north of St. Stephen's Green that is pretty cool if you are into that kind of thing.

The Book of Kell is cool, and the actual library at Trinity U. is badass.

wander the Temple Bar District and along the river a bit.

  6. "good", "impact", "due time', etc...   There's not really enough meat on those words to know if the parties arguing over them are really talking about any significant gap between their opinions.

I think a better question might be what does a combination of Hepa, Hamm, and Hayes need to average (points / rebounds per game) to get this team back to the NCAA tournament?

I think a big key this year will be what we get from the SF / 3rd guard position.  Febres will get a long look.  Roach and Jones (assuming he makes it back for full fall duty) will be in that position a lot.  Will Liddell be competent to step in and provide some quality minutes if Febres is not the answer?

I am curious who gets major minutes from the Long, Liddell, Ramey pool.  My guess is Long.  I'm thinking Liddell will get a few meaningful minutes early (prior to B-12 play) to spell Febres, and Long will like be played a lot early to see if he can fill in for both Coleman and Roach.  If Long can't fill at PG efficiently for Coleman, Ramey may get a look to see if he has better PG sense than a senior Roach.

We can least afford any injury at the Center position.  I suspect DO will rotate over to Center at times, which I'm not a huge fan of when we play any team with size.  It would be nice if Hayes comes in able to contribute more than Banks did.

And, I have no idea if/how/when Cunningham will come into the fold.  My guess is he's a redshirt.

I am cautiously optimistic about next year... but, I'm not expecting a conference championship or a top-20 caliber season.

  7. The 70+ year old dude who had his leg hiked up on the counter in the locker room, blow-drying his ball-sack in the mirror was a real treat.

  8. I think we can definitely be in the mix for a tournament bid next year if: Roach picks up where he left off; DO gets in shape, shows improved decision making and increases his shot %; and Long and Febres can hit open shots and play adequate defense.  I liked what I saw with Coleman and Simms as freshmen as they gained college experience and am not worried about them getting better.

To be better than last year overall, we will need a significant contribution (with defense and rebounding) from another big (or collection thereof) besides Simms and 8-10 points a game every once in awhile from a collection of freshmen.

I am not sure Jones will be able to come back and contribute this year (unless it's late in the season).  If that's the case, he may add a needed boost during the crunch part of the season.  He could be the difference between a low seed and middle of the pack seed and could reduce the need for any point contribution from freshmen.

I think the ceiling for next year is a 6-7 seed (5 seed perhaps if Jones is back and one of our freshmen turns out to be a stud from the start of conference play)… the floor is probably a NIT bid.

Benavides/Pettis & Guida/Oliveira on Fight Pass, Rashad & Ricardo Lamas on the free undercard, yet CM Punk is on PPV.

    Jesus fuck.

Punk won't last past 90 seconds... so maybe one of the better Fight Pass fights gets shown if another fight on the PPV is a quickie.

For as well as Charlie recruited in some areas, he gave us Tristian Houston, Chris Warren, and Kyle Porter at RB. I mean WTF...

hindsight is 20/20... any coach who pulled those guys would've been congratulated / celebrated at the time.  Houston has injury issues outside any coaches control.  Warren actually played pretty well under Charlie.  Porter has definitely underwhelmed so far.

  11. Frontline on PBS had a very interesting episode about Pruitt's background and rise to EPA.   A strong argument can be made that he should never hold any public office.  The fact that he is running EPA is mind-numbing... immensely irritating and depressing.

  12. The moron in a busy coffee shop or food joint who insists upon giving over 10 feet of space to the person in front of him in line when there is a crush of humanity behind him... not sure why, but it bothers the fuck out of me.  It's usually the same schmuck who has been standing in front of a giant menu for 10 minutes and has no idea what he wants to order when he gets to the front of the line.

    DO - 35.2 minutes per game, 13.4 points,  0.400 FG%, 0.288 3P%, 7.2 boards, 1.2 assists, 2.2 TO

    Mack - 31.3 minutes per game, 14.8 points, 0.459 FG%, 0.391 3P%, 4.8 boards, 0.8 assists, 1.4 TO

So Mack played less, scored more, scored more efficiently, and turned the ball over less.  DO had more boards and slightly more assists. Mack's stat line is the exact kind of player we're missing on this team. We have guys who can dish assists. We have guys that can board.

I can't really quantify the effects of Mack's off court issues since I don't know what they really were but going on stats alone, it's pretty damn clear as day that taking Mack over DO would be a major upgrade to this team.

it would be nicer and easier if stats alone was the standard... I like Mack, but noticed he was not exactly a positive motivator on the court.  He griped and pouted when he didn't get the ball and berated teammates at times during games.  Having a teammate who brings negativity can be a distraction and actually cause bad chemistry, over-thinking, and shitty performance of other players.  It's easy to say you'd win a lot of games with a bunch of Stephen Jacksons, Michael Beasleys, Latrell Sprewells, etc... based upon stats alone.   I'm not putting Mack in those guys' category, but I am fine with him gone aqnd don't miss him.

This show started sucking its own dick.

I'd guess the writers read their own reviews after a pretty outstanding season 1 and decided they were geniuses, so now we have to listen to them tediously detail their philosophies on life for 40 minutes...and maybe, if we're lucky, they'll give us 10 minutes of story.

"Should we help the shadow king get his body back?  I don't know...did you know that human beings are the only creatures on earth that can form an opinion about their world?"

If I wanted some asshole to tell me 'how the world really is' without bothering to put it in story form, I'd go read the cloak room threads.

Season 1 was fun and weird and it told a story .  Season 2 reminds me of the second season of 'Sense 8'...where the writers were out of plot ideas, so they gave us music videos and people sitting around talking about life in general.

    agreed... about to jump ship

    Yes it was.

but how did she miss shooting the dude when he was running in the open field - isn't she supposed to be deadlier than John Wick?

She seems to REALLY enjoy the up close and personal kills ... so perhaps she was wanting him to gas or trying to wing him and rather than get the torso kill shot... or maybe long range shooting just isn't her forte'?

  16. The perp also kept "souvenirs" from many of his victims.

Perhaps the family member of this fucker stumbled across some of that stuff and put 2 and 2 together when the renewed press/TV efforts came out to catch him.
